Can't Issue Store Credit To Customer Accounts? What?

I have been looking on the forums for half an hour now and to my bewilderment, I believe I am seeing that Shopify does not have any sort of Store Credit functionality? How is that even possible considering how many merchandise-type stores must be built with Shopify. Does anyone know if this is correct, and if so, if there is an App? I would need my customers to be able to maintain a rolling Store Credit balance that they could use all, or a portion of, as a checkout payment method.

And please don't mention the "gift card" option. That is in no way the same thing.

Hi Greengoblin37,

Britton here with the Shopify support team.

You are quite correct that there is no way to associate store credit with customer accounts at the present time. In fact, the only way to have multiple payment methods in the way that you describe for an online order is to use a gift card at the moment. You already seem to be familiar with the idea of using gift cards for store credit though so I won't go through it again here.

I can see why this would be a useful feature though so I am going to pass it along for you as a feature request.

I hope that helps to shed some light on the situation!

...yikes. Is there an app then anyone knows about? I find this to be pretty shocking. Every single retail store I can think of ever, has and uses store credit balances for its customers on returns or purchased items, yet somehow this is not an inherent capability within Shopify? A web design platform specifically geared towards... "shopping"?

This is a huge issue for us as well. We are an online clothing boutique that does more than 16,000 orders a MONTH. We have returns come in and only issue "store credit" not refunds. We issue a lot of gift cards. This is one reason we are looking at other platforms.

It's entirely bonkers. I feel I need to start looking for another platform as well. Really wish I had known this before I spent thousands building up my site. Don't even get me started on the inability to add filters to the search results page...

Hi,

Since this post is few months old, I would just like to know if shopify was smart enough to develop the functionalirty of store credit already or no?

Store credits is a huge deal for us and its something we can't alternate with gift certificates. I can't believe a store like shopify failed to deliver on it. Its one of the main reason I am inclined to search for other platforms providing full functionalities.

Is it possible to get this feature custom built on the platform, like an app or editing the code?

If anyone was able to find their way around store credits (besides gift certificates) please let us know.

Thanks

It's embarassing. One of the most common sense required functionalities in retail and a web platform called SHOPIFY can't even offer it. I have a friend who is a Shopify expert that helped build by site. He says almost all of his customers find this to be a hurdle and that Shopify refuses to fix it because they look at everything and say "Will this make us more money?". In hindsight, I wish I never built this site through Shopify. It makes retail stores with numerous products and customer exchanges/sales almost impossible to manage. I'm at the point now where I am just going to turn my store off and save the monthly fee. It doesn't do what I need and they don't offer a way to fix it.

Also, SEARCH RESULTS FILTERING!

Hey there,

This is Oswald, a Guru here at Shopify!

Thank you all for the feedback! We can certainly understand the use-case for store credit to be attached to customer accounts for in-store returns and even the option to be used online.

We are also merchants and our focus is on making commerce better for everyone. We are constantly working on making the platform better for merchants because what is bet for you is best for us.

The options for the POS store credit is currently to either have an in-store system or put the funds onto a gift card which we do recognize that it is not the best solution for every merchant.

For reference, the pos process for exchanging an item or refunding an order to a gift card can be found below:

As Britton mentioned previously it has been brought up with our developers and as soon as we have an update we will certainly let our merchants know! :)

Cheers!

The response to this is a broken record. "Yes, we understand the common sense need for store credit balances. Now instead of fixing it, take a look at our gift card option instead!"

I honestly think it's too expensive to pay $10 and up for an app just to be able to issue store credit!

Hi everyone,

A development partner of mine over at Bytestand have been working on a proper store Credit App for almost a year now and we finally have submitted it for beta to the App Store!  Check it out here: https://apps.shopify.com/fresh-credit/  Give it a shot and let us know your feedback so we can start improving the app!

Hi Greg & Jesse,

It looks like your store credit solutions work no only for in-store POS, but specifically for online e-commerce in a regular shopify store?   Would you mind sharing some insight on how your solutions work internally from a developers perspective?

In some examples I see that the points can be applied in cart and it shows as a discount applied.

It looks like you're managing the points on your back end, and then issuing coupons in real time for that amount to act as a store credit solution - very cool!  Does that roughly describe the mechanims you're using (eg. discount codes created on the fly)  or is it using shopify gift cards internally?

Hey Mike,

So Fresh Credit doesn't use points, codes, coupons, vouchers or anything in between. Its all cash. We are unique in that way. There are no codes, just cash. And the customers can carry a balance, as well as use all or just a portion of their credit. Its not a one time use of anything, its just cash.

And yes its for online shops only as Shopify doesn't provide that feature.

Pretty cool.. Let us know if that makes sense!

Thanks
Todd

This has been a huge setback for me as well.

I'm new to the ecommerce world, what other platforms are similar to shopify that do offer this store credit option?

Could a possible workaround to this be to offer the customer a discount code specific to them, in the amount refunded, good for one use only?  You could also make the code good for only a specific amount of time....

*Edit: I do see that apparently there is no way to issue a discount code to a specific customer email...although maybe I'm missing it.  To me, this would be an easy workaround rather than developing an entire "store credit" system.   Simply allow one to issue a discount code to a specific email address.  The rest is there:  restrict to one use only, specify an amount, expiration date if desired.

Currently the only option I see here would be to offer the code to a certain 'group' of customers in the discounts drop down box, but to make the code ridiculous enough to not be guessed by anyone else other than the specific customer you want to have it (i.e.; code AKSjfdj83273$$@3 or something).  You can lower your overall risk here by clicking the 'Limit number of times this discount can be used in total' box and entering 1.

One thing people should check as well is the ecommerce regulations that apply to them.

I've lost count of the number of sellers I've seen on different forums complaining about not being able to issue credit (yes there are many other carts other than Shopify that can't do it) but they are based in countries where offering credit for returned items is not allowed except under a very small number of circumstances which rarely apply.

Well now the only option to issue store credit on Shopify is FreshCredit.. not the mess of discounts and one time use codes that expire.. check us out in the App Store..

Thanks

Hi Oswald-

I would be fine with using gift cards but the problem with the way shopify pos tells us to handle it, is that it shows we made sales twice. So we make a sale then if a customer returns it we refund to store credit. Then we purchase a gift card for them using store credit as payment. Which shows income. Then when they purchase an item with the gift card that shows another sale (income). So you pay income tax twice??? This can't be correct. When switching to shopify pos we put ipads out front instead of computers and there doesn't seem to be a way to issue a gift card on the shopify apps. Only the desktop version. Please advise!

We have no problem selling another gift card and taking payment for it. But then it shows we received income twice. I want to be able to issue a gift card like you can on the back end shopify.

Wow, 2 years later and it is still the same. Is it just me or is shopify aimed at selling apps to customers now, as suppose to adding PROPER features. Time to sharpen my woocommerce skills...

All woocommerce does is rebrand gift card to "store credit" you could even use discounts codes on shopify and just keep track of amounts used updating personal codes until $0.

Exactly! And you dont need a $79 plan to do it either.

An how do you keep track and update the coupon for hundreds of customers? I hope not manually?

Today we implemented Rewardify on our store to handle store credit. It's FANTASTIC!

I'm not affiliated with the developer. My store (http://shop.fix2u.com) has been running for a couple of years now. I had assumed store credit was going to be next to impossible to implment after reading many threads about people complaining about the lack of support for it in the native shopify installation.

We took a look at Fresh Credit, but because it was using discount codes, it would not work for us because we implement wholesale pricing (discount levels) via an app called "Wholesale Club".

What's amazing about Rewardify is that it also offers the same discount functionality for wholesale customers! So - we have saved ourslves the $40 monthly sub to Wholesale Club, moved to Rewardify (only $10 a month), replicated the existing discount funcitons we had - which work perfectly - and we now have the added bonus of store credit functionality. The app works for both online and Shopify POS (not tested the later - we are only online).

I hope this information is helpful. I was suprised the developer of Rewardify has not mentioned his app in more of these types of threads. Talking of the developer - we got fast and very good support from him via e-mail.

I highly recommend you take a look and I hope this helps some of those people out who are looking for a store credit solution on shopify.
