Shipping options for Australia

Hi, have just discovered Shopify, have set up a test account, very impressed so far. We are based in Australia. For shipping I can see there are basic weight and price based options and also UPS. Are there any other options available right now? Surely there is FedEx support? (for shipping internationally from AU) Shipping costs within Australia also vary wildly depending on location. We have some very remote locations! Is there a way I can code a custom shipping module that takes postcode and weight to calculate calculate cost? Or maybe you are planning shipping support for Australia in the core product? I have worked on quite a few shops here and pretty much every major player uses the Australia Post eParcel service as their standard shipping option so that would be the one for the wishlist. Cheers, Tim

I've just recently launched my site and have signed up for e-parcel.

At this stage I have no idea how I am going to integrate the pricing structure into Shopify. E-parcel has a base rate for parcels over 500g and then charges per kg thereafter. Problem is there is 32 different destination prices for both base rate and per kg.

As far as I can see at the moment my only option is to set up the costs, charging the highest price per state even of sending parcel within my own area.

Please let me know if you have figured a way to get around this.

Thanks!

Hello, I'm interested in finding out how you got on with Shipping methods using Shopify in Australia. I'm looking at using Shopify for my new online store. We are based in Australia, but I notice Shopify has no support for AusPost. ie a dynamic Auspost calculator. How did you get around this? Many thanks for any advice you can offer me. At the moment Shopify is looking like a great option but the lack of shipping for Australia is holding me back. All the best

Does Shopify support Australian shipping yet? I need to know this week or I will have to move to another Shopping Cart Provider.

Wikipedia has a list of shopping cart providers that have Real Time Shipping Calculation for Australia Post: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_shopping_cart_software

I'm in the same situation and have been comparing Shopify (my preferred option)  and Spiffy Stores (Australian based competitor also run on Ruby on Rails).  The biggest advantage they have, and it is compelling is that they've been able to integrate Australia Post and FedEx as well as offering a wider range of payment gateways.  Given the similarity of the systems it should be possible for Shopify to implement this as well.

The Wikipedia link above is good, but not complete, eg Spiffy Stores not mentioned.

I prefer Shopify, it seems to provide more flexibility for the newbie and have better themes, no transaction fees and more storage, etc - but any issue which impacts on our distribution is a major issue and fundamental to an on-line business.  Given the number of Australian businesses that are going on-line I'm surprised Shopify hasn't addressed this by now.

Question for Shopify staff/expert... What do we need to do in order to this looked at?  Given the above competition which is emerging and the potential market, you may be giving away some of your competitive advantage.

Shopify is brilliant, except for this lack of Australia Post Zone calculation functionality.  Please Shopify, or an App developer provide a solution ASAP. This is crucial core functionality for Shopify.

If Shopify integrated support for Australia Posts E-Parcel it would be the perfect solution, without API support for Australia Posts services Shopify falls short as a e-commerce solution for Australian online retailers.

Hi Folks,

I am interested in developing this as an addon solution to Shopify if enough people will sign up . I have met one other Australian user who is looking for shipping calculator. Since this will be done as a seperate app that needs to be hosted, there would have to be a charge for such an application. What is a reasonable rate for you?

Emall me at richard at webifytechnology dot com if you want to keep it private.

Thanks!

Hi all,

We have started on building a Shopify application to support getting Australian Post shipping rates. If you are interested, I have set up a form where you can enter your contact information so that we can notify you when the application is ready.

Here is the link. (https://webifytechnology.com/shopify/aus_post_app_signup.php)

Hi guys,

We've also developed an real time shipping calculator for Australia Post

It's available on the app store now in the beta section

http://apps.shopify.com/australia-post-rts-calculator

The App is free to use in beta and integrates into existing themes.

Rates are based off Australia Posts PAC API

Thanks

Hi

Try www.ParcelSolutions.com.au their system links Shopify to Eparcel and also ClickandSend !! works well, has a database too, so you can enter Weight Height Length Width  - which you can't do in Shopify?

Checks addresses and applies your Eparcel Charge code!! Saves a packet of time per day!

Hope this helps!!

Not all online sites in Australia use Australia Post services for delivery. What we want is to be able is set shipping pricing based on a specific Australian post codes. Shopify only lets you set up pricing per Australian state/terriority, and not the postcodes in the actual Australian states/terriorities.

I use multiple couriers for my deliveries as Australia Post is not always the cheapest.

So how can we integrate our shopify site that is linked with every Australian Post Code, where we can specify a delivery price per post code.

eg, At the moment, sending goods from Sydney, NSW (2000) to Geelong, VIC (3220) is the same price as sending from Sydney, NSW (2000) to Melbourne, VIC (3000).

I should be able to say that for a Metro (NSW) delivery to Metro (VIC) delivery is cheaper price then Metro (NSW) to Regional (VIC). At the moment, shopify forces you to put the same price.

Which one of the apps on the market cater for this?

Australia Post are great, but they won't touch bulky goods (0.25m3 max I believe). I sell furniture, so they are no good to me. I would pay good money for a Temando plug-in with a real-time calculator.

@replyJason
You could set up separate delivery methods named Metro Delivery and Regional Delivery and have different prices. That would atleast give you 2 separate price brackets per state. However you would be relying on the customer to select the correct one for themselves.

I found the Temando API. I think we can work with it.

Hi Sandra,

I use a shopify application called Better Shipping. It's the best app I have found so far.

Pros:

  • Allows you to set a delivery price per postcode
  • Allows you to set a price per product

Cons:

  • If the customer orders more than one product, the price is the same. In other words, if buying a single item which is say 1kg, and another item which is say 20kg, then the delivery price set for the post code will be the same. You have to apply the uplift on the 'price per product' section, which gets added to the price you set for the postcode - so can get a little tricky
  • So for my site, it's one flat price per post code, irrespective if you order 1 item or a 100.
  • Must make a small upgrade to your shopify package, if you have the basic one right now. Do this by calling Shopify, and don't upgrade online - unless you want to do a full proper upgrade.

Hi Jason,

What exactly is the difference between upgrading online or upgrading via phone?

In the context of the Better Shipping App you can either upgrade online or upgrade via the phone. In short, Better Shipping works if you are using the PROFESSIONAL package by default. If you don't use PROFESSIONAL here are the options to use Better Shipping:

Upgrade Online

  • Better Shipping requires you to be on either the package PROFESSIONAL or higher. If your on the BASIC package now you can upgrade online to PROFESSIONAL if that's what you need.

To Upgrade via the Phone

  • For an extra $10-$20 a month, you can buy a small-add on to your BASIC package to allow you use Better Shipping. This is of-course if you don't want to go to PROFESSIONAL. To take this small add-on to your BASIC package for Better Shipping, you have to upgrade by calling Shopify on the phone and they will add it for you, without you upgrading to PROFESSIONAL.

Most of the product we ship to Australia goes by TNT. I don't know how they are for shipping from Australia. We have a vendor in Tasmania that uses  www.baggagefreight.com.au to get their product to us here in the US. It's a rather bulky heavy item so I don't know how competitive they would be for smaller items.

The reality is no one solution will fit all, however the freight business is relatively simple.

The variables are :

Postcode (range)
Basic Charge + KG Charge (volumetric or dead whichever is greatest)
Product weight and Product Volume when packed.

However you may wish to offer flat rate for some items - items of low volume.

Would love to work with a developer to integrate Toll/Startrack/IPEC/austpost.

Or has it been done already, if so by who?

Thanks

Dave

Hi Paul,

I'm interested in your app, must have Aust shipping sorted for our shop, however I'm at total noob level with Shopify.  What kind of support do you offer, what is your fee structure?

Maybe you can email me directly, brisvegascomics@hotmail.com

Cheers
