Recurring Payments - Status Update This post is outdated

I know that shopify doesn't support recurring payments yet via shopify. I also have seen in the forums that it is a feature that many have requested and shopify is potentally working towards moving it up the backlog to getting it done sooner than later. Maybe? Maybe not based on how long it has been discussed in the forums.
http://ecommerce.shopify.com/c/shopify-apps/t/recurring-payments-28740
http://ecommerce.shopify.com/c/shopify-discussion/t/update-on-recurring-payments-130211

I also know that there are solutions like chargify which is a bit extensive and expensive for just the limited feature set of recurring payments. Also it outsources your products and info to another application and checkout process..
http://apps.shopify.com/chargify
Also - chargify does not support my payment gateway at this time but Shopify does. Yes my payment gateway supports recurring payments and has a ruby api to do it.

So as I plan on how to obtain this feature w/n my store, I would like to know if this is something that would arrive by end of year? Or if there is any other insight you may be able to provide?

It seems as if there is some API support for recurring payments:
http://docs.shopify.com/api/tutorials/shopify-billing-api
Of course making a custom app is an option but so is native shopify interfaces which is what I want.

I am considering migrating to competing solutions like volusion for this simple feature which makes me sad.. :(

If you read this post and agree. Please just post something w/n this thread to help it gain traction.

I have also opened a ticket with support and will post back what they say.

Hey! Thanks for posting about this. We're definitely aware that some shop owners would love this feature, but it's difficult to give any timelines because of the nature of development and ecommerce — it's a fast moving industry,  and all major updatesare posted at www.shopify.com/blog .

Feel free to email me directly or reply to this post!

Recurring payments would be an excellent feature and as far as I'm concerned it is becoming essential as I see a subscription model being the way forward for many ecommerce sites as a way to generate regular income. Shopify have now integrated Stripe with Shopify Payments in the US and Stripe accept a recurring payment model so it would seem an obvious fit for Shopify Payments to develop the recurring payment side. I am based in the UK and so the only option I have is Chargify, which is expensive and RecurHub which isn't ready yet (I have tested it and there are too many issues for me). Neither of these offer a great customer experience as Shopify don't allow the customer details to be passed to the apps so the customer has to enter their details again. It's also not great if the customer wants to buy a single one off purchase and a subscription purchase as they have to checkout twice using two different checkouts. Purchasing multiple subscription products is also a pain as the customer needs to go through the checkout routine for each one. All in all the ideal solution would be for Shopify to bring this in house using Stripe and other Payment Gateways so the store owners and customers have a much better experience. I also believe people will be turned off Shopify unless they get this model incorporated ASAP.

I forgot to post back from shopify support. They said nothing more than what I had already said here.... So I had nothing to really report back on...

Although since this time, Shopify Payments has launched and they have recurring built in for that.. But you have to use stripe. I can get cheaper fees elsewhere and still need recurring payments.. This whole integrated shopify payments approach is what I was after, but in order to get it you have to switch over from your gateway and adhere to all the rules of stripe..

Thanks so much for this thread. It is exactly what I wanted to know.

Where can I go to learn more about the recurring payment feature in Shopify Payments?

I have a new store and not attached to any payment gateway at this point.

I should clarify what I was quickly typing. It's clear if you want out of the box recurring payments, then you are going to have to go with Shopify payments and stripe. That is where they will implement it and support it down the road.

So investing in that integrated approach is a good idea. Unfortunately I haven't noticed anything completely out of the box for an interface for managing the recurring payments yet.. but at least you're dealing with the integrated customer data and store model..

http://docs.shopify.com/api/tutorials/shopify-billing-api#recurring-charge

https://stripe.com/docs/api/ruby#subscriptions

In comparison, I use USAePay and had to write an app to a old crappy turd soap interface to do it. And that makes a separate app/hosting/database.

Thanks so much for the reply and info!

To confirm: Currently Shopify using Shopify Payments does not support recurring charges but if / when they do it will be using Shopify Payments to collect the money.

If I wanted to set up a store today that took recurring payments I would have to use a shopify/chargify or a shopify/recurhub integration to accomplish this.

Sorry for the follow up question, I am new to shopify and trying to figure out the best way to accomplish this task for a new store.

Thanks! -- Steven

Although we don't need this feature, it would be a cool one to see come into effect. I know personally a handful of Shopify stores that could benefit for this feature... so... I second that request!

Bummer news. I'm in the trial phase building my Shopify store and I just assumed that Shopify would offer this very common feature. It seems like it has exploded in the last year. Since my business is entirely subscription based, I'll guess I'll be looking for a competitor solution as I don't want my customers to go through the hassle of double check-out or double input. I noticed one person mention Volusion. Any other recommendations? Thanks.

@Michael sounds like we are in the same boat. Look me up at http://www.intowncoffee.com or google intown coffee and get in touch. Happy to tell you what I have learned, maybe we can figure out the best solution.

@shopify I would love to see recurring subscriptions added to the core of shopify sooner than later. As would many I think.

Having a danish webshop that wants to offer a subscription product, this is really bad news.

My payment gateway is not supported by Chargify. I cannot use recurhub since I need to accept Dankort (danish credit card).

Is my only option to switch e-commerce software??

What solutions are other people using?

I'm also thinking about moving to Volution. I'm working through a test period to see if we can move our store over to Shopify, but we are going to need this feature and Chargify is not worth it.

@Steven, I might be getting in touch with you to see what solutions you've come up with.

We are looking to move off of Shopify because of the lack of recurring payments. I realize recurring payments are complicated to implement but they are key to our business.

@Jordan You guys have a great site. I have a few friends that have waited at breweries at 5AM to get the latest release. I will pass your site onto them.

I hate to say it but as I get further into my artisan coffee subscription site, I am thinking of moving from shopify.

Feel free to look me up or I will get in touch, maybe we can figure out the best solution.

Thanks Steven for the compliment. We're not quite there with getting those kind of releases but we are working on it. Foremost on our minds is winning the trust of the brewers who obviously have the choice of where to distribute their product and ensuring the quality of everything that we offer. Unfortunately our digital experience lacks a bit at the moment which is why I am here on these forums. The next couple of weeks will be a little rough for me but if you email our support address I will put you in touch with my head of ops who is exploring e-commerce platforms.

Shopify has this feature for their own store, why not for its clients?

Setting up Recurring Payments is a must have for me to stay with Shopify.  I am checking around for other options to see what else may be available.  Bummer...otherwise, i love Shopify.

We are upgrading our website for next season and looking for the right ecommerce platform. Shopify is at top of our list but recurring payments is the only dilemma. We use a payment plan for our early bird sale before winter.

@Shopify - Can you provide any kind of timeline for recurring payments?? We have no problem using Shopify Payments as our primary payment gateway. Chargify app too steep. This added feature would make our ecommerce platform decision a no-brainer, as I'm sure with many others. Thanks and hope to make Shopify our solution:)

I would strongly recommend against using RecurHub. Their customer support can sometimes take 3-4 days to respond to e-mails and they lack basic features required for an e-commerce solution. In their transaction history they only give you the total amount charged per transaction and don't break down the taxes/fees charged at all which makes accounting an absolute nightmare.

I also just noticed that they are not charging tax on the total amount of an item including shipping. They apply the tax rate to the base cost of the item and then apply the shipping on top of that. This is a HUGE problem

I guess Shopify does not use their own software.  They sell us a subscription.  Maybe we should switch to the software they are using.  Or maybe they should realize that subscription billing is important to their customers too and move it up the list. Shopify Payments is powered by Stripe.  Stripe allows recurring billing.  Come on Shopify, tie the ends together.

I would absolutely love this feature. I love shopify, and right now I'm on the basic plan. I would definitely be willing to pay $60/month extra for this feature (going to an external site with Chargify just isn't appealing).

I love shopify, and even without that feature, I'll still be a huge fan, this would just be the cherry on top.
