Protx and 3D Secure This post is outdated

Hello, We're in the process of switching from a home-grown Java shop using Protx and have come across the problem of Shopify not supporting 3D Secure (which means we can't accept Maestro cards, which account for the majority of our sales). This has been "discussed here before":http://forums.shopify.com/categories/1/posts/17553#comment-21888. From my limited understanding, I think this is a thorny problem because the user gets redirected to the bank's site and that doesn't fit with the standard pattern. I wonder whether one solution would be to use an offsite gateway (which is what we do with the Java product we currently use). I had assumed that I could adapt the "PayPal Website Payments Standard":http://activemerchant.rubyforge.org/classes/ActiveMerchant/Billing/Integrations/Paypal.html gateway but I'm not making much progress. Is there anyone out there in a similar situation who would like to work together with me on this? Is anyone interested in taking this on for a bounty? - Bill

Hi again,

I wonder whether I can open up this topic to the more general question, “What do UK people do about the whole 3D Secure, Maestro, Shopify thing?”.

Are the following statements true?
  1. You can’t do 3D Secure on Shopify
  2. Maestro require 3D Secure
  3. You can’t use Maestro in the UK on Shopify.

We’re quite open to different solutions. We’d rather not move from Protx and it would be a real pain (and expense) to move from Streamline, but I’d like to explore all options.

Hi Bill,

We are in the UK and use PayPal Payments Pro. This allows us to accept Maestro from Shopify but it doesn’t include 3D Secure. Somehow PayPal have got away with not joining the 3D Secure scheme…

We have looked at switching to Protx as it would save us a lot of money in fees but this problem is preventing us from doing so.

I don’t know why Shopify can’t support the 3D Secure workflow? It will become a MAJOR problem in the future as Visa (with the Verified by Visa scheme) and Mastercard are slowly forcing the use of these services.

Hi Matt,

Thanks for the advice. I guess we could use PayPal Payments Pro as a stop-gap for a while… It fees a bit uncomfortable to increase our fees to roll out the new shop.

Nice blog, btw.

Hello,

I’m also a shopify user desperately trying to find a solution that will allow me to use my UK Merchant Account in conjunction with Shopify. It’s not really an option to not support UK Maestro.

The lack of development in this area seems to indicate that Shopify users with UK merchant accounts are a minority.

There was a post by Matt Fawcett on the ActiveMerchant group back in November 2008 describing an effort to implement 3D Secure. However, this thread appears to have gone dead. I have replied to the group to find out whether there have been any further developments.

Cheers,

Matthew

Just wondered if there was any further news re. using 3D Secure with Shopify?

Any work arounds?

Thanks,
