Bitcoin This post is outdated

The purpose of this discussion board is to put Bitcoin on the radar for shopify so that we can accept this new form of legitimate currency.

There is a company out of California called Coinbase that offers merchant services and USD to BTC (bitcoin) trades.

please put your opinion and if you want to be able to accept bitcoins natively.

Thank you!

I really enjoy using Shopify and my store is rapidly gaining traction after only roughly 12 months. It's quite possible that I could triple sales overnight if Bitcoin was an option. Hoping to see at a minimum someone come up with an App over the next few months or full integration into Shopify very soon!!! I don't want to have to set up a secondary WordPress site just so that I can accept bitcoin :(

It has... and you can also manage multiple stores with one admin, which is something shopify doesn't offer and is driving me nuts! As much of a headache to move it over, the more I become aware of the Shopify's limitation, the more I consider Magento...

The lack of action on this issue is ridiculous.

The message is clear: If you want bitcoin integration, you should move your store over to 3dcart.

This is incredible regarding the feedback on BitCoin needs.  Although the currency isn't stable and the value of the BitCoin changes rapidly, others would still like to have the solution installed?

Please, please share your thoughts on this!  We have integrated BitCoin solutions for select clients but they were one off opportunities.  We see BitCoins as a platform with a lot of risks but from the feedback, businesses are willing to accept that risk?

I don't think it's much risk if the business can choose to have most of every transaction automagically converted to the local fiat.

Yes, it can be a risk ansd instable, but the more people use it, the stronger it becomes. Plus, its a statement saying "you bank go and f#$K yourself!" and that in itself is worth the risk!

I think this group sold me.  Now the tough question, would you pay a transaction fee of $0.25 to complete the integration and payment per sale?

on top of the shopify fee?

I'd pay it, however I don't see any reason why they'd have to include it. Being one of the first major e-commerce sites to offer integration would drive enough traffic to make it worthwhile for them.

I think your missing the economics of Bitcoins, it's not a free commerce.  A developer or tech company needs to create systems to buy and sell Bitcoins.  Someone is going to want a fee per transaction to do this plus server and management expense.  No one is going to do this for free - I'm trying to figure out the worth of a Bitcoin transaction.

Sure, there may be a fee associated with a bitcoin transaction, but it'll be far less than what currently exists. So if that's what you're saying (i.e. a flat .25 cent rate that is not in addition to their current fee schedule) I agree.

But how then do you calculate the 0.25 cents fee? How much will it cost them to run? Bitstamp.net has a fee schedule that goes to 0.5% or less of currency transactions.

Does magento charge an extra fee? or 3dcart?

Joe Garza Member

I don't know about Magento or 3d cart but I would assume yes, there is a fee.  Nothing is free - I assume you don't sell your services or products for free, there would be a fee for the transaction process.

I think a creative method would be a flat fee per transactional $0.25 with the ability as the collective volume of bitCoin members increase the cost per transaction lowers to a rate of $0.10 per transaction.  Very similar to bank transfers, this could work.  With no risk or liability, costs would cover hardware, support and installation.

I know nothing is free, but considering we already pay a monthly fee and transaction fee on shopify, you can't really claim it's free, right?

May I ask what's your position at shopify? I'm assuming you work here...

I've spoken with one of the engineers at Shopify at a meetup. What he said, was that the engineer that was going to implement bitcoin at Shopify, has since left the company. So, right now, there is no one at the company working on it or planning to work on it.

I would be willing to integrate an existing 3rd party payment provider with Shopify's system, but Shopify doesn't currently support that. :(

Yes, I want bitcoin too. I'd recommend that shopify integrate with CoinBase.com  using their API. The nice thing about coinbase is that they offer the option for a merchant to have bitcoin transaction balances automatically converted to dollars and the dollar value deposited into the merchant's bank account.

NOTE: I'm currently in the shopify trial period and am learning the ropes here, but I do really, really, really want/need bitcoin integration in shopify. I have coinbase integration using another self-hosted cart (zencart) for a different business & product line and it's great! Shopify really needs to do this. It is not a difficult thing to do and would be very good for their business.

Hey Everyone,

Just a quick update on this: our Bitpay integration is feature-complete and can be added to your store now. Due to the fact that it's a very new feature and not something we're ready to roll out to all stores just yet, you will need to contact me to have it enabled, and I may want to follow up with you for your feedback once you've been using it for a while, but it works. When active, Bitpay will appear as a credit card processor in the Checkout page of your shop admin - enter your access key and you'll be all set to go.

One caveat: at this time, Bitpay functions in the same way as the other credit card processors on Shopify, meaning that you can't use Bitpay in conjunction with Authorize.net, Stripe, or other credit card processors. PayPal Express Checkout can be used as a secondary option with Bitpay in the same way it can be used with all other gateways.

To activate, email me your shop URL at brian@shopify.com and I'll do my best to get everyone up and running promptly!

Hi.

My name is Emmanuel and I am from Kenya. I am 16 years old and live on the streets, because the hut I lived in with my parents exploded. After I was made homeless, I began begging for money. One night, I was taken in by a kind American woman who owns a small bakery--she gave me shelter, clothing and food. I worked at her bakery to earn my keep, and everything was going well. Unfortunately one day, dogs broke in and ate all of the food, and she blamed me and claimed I had fabricated this story, simply because I am black.

I mean I did fabricate it, but still.

I am currently living on the streets. I survive by gangsta rapping for money.

Although I am homeless, and in Kenya, I somehow still have access to a computer and know what Bitcoin is, so if you could find it in your heart to donate some Bitcoins, my address is: 18tihLGT3mEXfZqFGYz36N3vETbBvaraUZ

Thank you.

P.S. Any amount is appreciated, even 0.00001.

P.P.S. Please send Bitcoins urgently, the dogs have returned.

Folks, you can use bitcredits.io to start accepting bitcoin payments through Shopify right now...  It adds a new payment gateway and won't cut off your paypal or CC sales!

As of Nov 12th though, we do not do conversion to fiat money (that's in the works), so you'll receive the bitcoins to your wallet.  If you're in Canada, we'd like to talk with you, as we're doing a pilot project with conversion.

Cheers

This is awesome news! Bitcoin is revolutionizing the financial industry, and shopify is doing well to integrate bitcoin. My only encouragement would be for Shopify to make bitcoin transactions smooth and not settle for just having the option, while it still remains a painful and awkward means of transacting. The sooner, the better for Shopify!

I've setup the BitPay BitCoin Integration on my shopify store (www.AdLibiturAdventures.com) and did a test transaction. It works great!

Note, the customer will need a compatible BitCoin wallet installed on their machine. I had to fiddle with this a bit, but settled on a wallet from Multibit.org

The web browser needs to know what application to use to handle the transaction, but once it knows, everything goes smoothly and the browser won't ask again.

Hey all,

If you have BitPay beta enabled on your shop, check out 'Alternative Payment Methods' in the Checkout & Payment section. You'll now be able to activate BitPay alongside any Credit Card gateways, and allow your customers to choose which payment method they'd like to pay with during checkout.

If you'd like to be added to the BitPay beta to test this out, let us know within this thread!

Hi

My customers are also getting redirected to the "Oops, something went wrong" page on cellular devices. On the desktop they get to the "Pay with bitcoin" screen but are not able to click to pay. I have emailed bitcoin and have yet to get a response. I have entered in 2 different Api keys and get the same errors. Do the customers need to have a bitcoin account to purchase through bitcoin? I thought USD was accepted.

I got some answers from BitPay. You account has to be reviewed and VERIFIED for you to be able to accept Bitcoin payments. BitPay states that upon account creation you should be able to receive payments up to $100. However, they had a glitch and the system was preventing sales in ANY amount if your account was not verified.

1. To verify your account (and lift $100 per day allowance), login to your BitPay Dashboard and click on "upgrade your daily limit" link (https://bitpay.com/merchant-compliance). You will see other account levels and documents you would need to submit for each one.

2. Once you select which account level you would like, you will receive an email from BitPay with a ONE TIME ONLY link to a page which will allow you to upload your documents.

3. Upon submission of the documents, it takes a couple of business days to get your application reviewed.

4. Once your account is verified you will receive a confirmation email from BitPay and your customers will stop seeing the dreaded "Oops, somehtign went wrong" page.

As far as customers needing to have a bitcoin to pay - it's like asking if customers need a credit card to make a purchase. Some clarification:

- Bitcoin is a currency (much like dollars, yen, pounds, etc). It's not a system or a gateway of any sort.

- You are able to receive bitcoin payments through BitPay, much like you are receiving credit card sales through Shopify payments or Stripe.

- Customers do NOT have to have BitPay account, but they need to have some sort of bitcoin wallet in order to pay you.

- Once the payment is made, please verify that you BitPay account was credited and mark the payment in Shopify as "received" by clicking on "Mark Payment As Received" on customer's order page.

Any more questions, let me know.

PS. I can also probably find a toll free number for Bitpay for anyone who is interested, if you link back to us on your page :)

Thea, I just replied to the email you sent me.

Basically, total order amounts for Bitcoin orders are being double counted. Under each order total you will see a link to a total number of transactions. It will say "2 Transactions". If you expand that section you will see that Shopify is recording both the capture and the sale amount, and is applying BOTH amounts to the order total. This is, obviously, incorrect as only the sale amount needs to be applied to the order total.

I'd prefer soemthing more direct than a handler for a specific website. I've been in BitCoin for 4 years. Something super-simple, like the ability to upload a batch of public address and use them up as needed. I'll generate more whent he list gets short and upload them. My private keys can stay in cold storage and I (and the app) can check the transactions via blockchain.info's api. I don't want some automated convert to cash and deposit it crap... I keep my BTC, I never cash out. It's way more valuable than fake government dollars... By this method, you can transfer the BTC to whatever exchange you feel like instead of being locked into a pseudo-exchange like Coinbase, or a do-nothing middle-man like BitPay. I could fire it off to e-btc, or bitstamp, or just keep it where it is... Making it fancier than it needs to be only creates needless restrictions on what I do with my BTC. I don't want it automatically landing in a place where it can be seized. Make a stand alone method that doesn't integrate with anyone. The whole point of BitCoin is to be your own bank, not end up stuck with someone, paying fees, facing the possibility of your BTC being seized just like any other kind of money. Defeats the whole damn point...

Hi Dustin,

Although bitpay will take a 0.1% charge, the convenience of using them may outweigh this cost. Bitpay allow you to cash out end of each day in bitcoin if you like. This way you can keep your private key in cold storage and have them send you all your bitcoin profits.

It's obnoxious to have a middle-man holding my coins at all, when it's easier to program a batch address app and nobody else ever touches them. Involving a middle-man is just another point of accountavbility that charges a fee and bends to regulators. Why do it when it's actually easier to NOT do it?

Besides, there are reports of problems with the BitPay app and not one reply about something being done about it... I've been using BitPay for a year already. I'd like to get away from it. It's just added complication and sending my money out of my hands for no reason.

Bitpay, BIPS, cryptopay... all provide a valuable service to those who want to start accepting bitcoin. Additionally it's been made even easier with a great shopify app.

You are free to build your own app if you don't want a middle man ;)

I wanted to announce that Bitcredits.io now allows CAD payouts. We shield against volatility, there are no risk of chargebacks, no risk of fraud, when you sell for 100$, you get 100$ in your bank account the following day(s).

As some might have noticed, Bitcredits joined the Montreal-based Accelerator program FounderFuel. Watch out! We have a very simple integration with Shopify and I encourage all to encourage a fellow Canadian company!

And again, I confirm that I'm with Bitcredits.io and it's a very simple and quick setup.

Alex reply any email as fast as I would do myself.

GoCoin accepts not only Bitcoin payments, but also other leading alt-coins such as Litecoin and Dogecoin.  You can settle in either fiat currency or in coins or any percentage of split you prefer.  That is, for most merchants, we recommend keeping 10% in coins so you will have a reserve for refunds or in case you want to benefit from upswings in the coin price increases.  If you are interested in integrating with Shopify and want step by step instructions write to support@gocoin.com

Happy shopping!

+1 for Coinbase. I am sick and tired of BitPay for holding over payments and payments short of 0.0000001 BTC

@Chuck -- what do you mean "holding over payments"? Thanks.

We're having an awful time with Bitpay. It worked perfectly at first. Each time a bitcoin transaction went through, the payment would be automatically transferred to our bank account.

Then double payments started happening, and we have been having a lot of customers complain about it. We get no support at all from Bitpay. Now the automatic funds transfer to our bank account has stopped, and we can't access the balance of our bitpay account. We've tried to contact Bitpay about it, but we've heard nothing back from them yet.

Shopify needs to offer an alternative to Bitpay.

I've just been informed by Bitpay that they only pay out when you have a minimum of $1000 CAD in your account. This is ridiculous. We should be able to withdraw our funds at any point.

Now I've been informed that BitPay wants to charge us $35 to transfer our bit coin balance to our bank account. This is really, really offside. Shopify should give people an alternative to using BitPay because they're taking advantage of ecommerce retailers. (we weren't informed of changes to minimum withdrawal amounts at the time they changed it) Although I don't want to, I'm removing the bit coin option on our site until either shopify offers us an alternative to BitPay, or I find an alternative to Shopify.

Hey guys,

I made a step by step guide on how to add a coinbase payment button to your site. I hope its easy to follow!

http://www.wikihow.com/Add-a-Coinbase-Button-to-Shopify

You can see it implemented at www.thebitcoinart.com a shopify hosted website.

Coinbase really does a good job of holding my inventory and logging shipping addresses etc.
