verifying website on Pinterest This post is outdated

to show the full store URL at Pinterest they have a verification process. You have to upload a html to your server.

Uploading the file gives the following URL: http://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0188/1552/files/pinterest-b578a.html?46

The problem is that Pinterest searches for the following file: http://basics-shirts-tops.myshopify.com/pinterest-b578a.html.

Is there a solution?

Thank you

Stefan

  • Verifying your website lets people see the full URL on your profile and in search results.

  • <label id="replace-label" class="Left" style="display: inline-block; line-height: 1.4em; font-size: 18px; float: none; width: 150px; padding-top: 7px; vertical-align: top;">Instructions</label>
    Your server responded with a status code of 404 (file not found). We tried to visit the file at http://basics-shirts-tops.myshopify.com/pinterest-b578a.html.

Please read the Pinterest link, they are aware that this is a shortcoming on their verification process and are working on other methods:

I don't really understand what the answer is on this. That it just doesn't work? Are we able to upload html files on Shopify?

that's right, basically until they sort out having an HTML tag that we can add to our theme.liquid, we're stuffed.

Has anyone tried using 301 redirects to accomplish this?  A bit of a hack but it could work.

not doing it for me.

Copying the path of the uploaded html file gives http://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0188/1552/files/pinterest-b578a.html?59

Why the "?59" at the end of the path?

That makes the file not readable by pinterest.

@sfnkol yeah that happend to me too. Just type "/pinterest-b578a.html" and take out the "?59".

There is a simpler way to do Pinterest verification:

1. Theme > Template Editor;

2. Edit Theme.liquide;

3. insert <meta name="p:domain_verify" content="XXXXX" /> right after <Head> and save the template. (XXXXX is your unique key from Pinterest)

4. Come back to Pinterest and continue verification.

5 optional. Come back to Theme.liquide and remove <meta>

Jamie for president. Nice tutorial! A quick question as you seem to be a shopify genius - I have tried multiple times to make the pictures on my site carveon.com to change if you choose a different material from the drop down section of any product page. I tried a couple of tutorials but no joy. Is this even possible within shopify do you know? or am I barking up the wrong tree...

Hi..

I was actually sent to this discussion by Shopify, however, I have the same problem as some others...during upload, the file is appended after .html by the characters ?487, and I have no idea how to remove it. I'm trying to get verified by The Find, and this changes the file name, and it's not recognized. Excellent tutorial, BTW! Except for this one little problem...

thank you!

Hi David –

When I visit www.satyatea.com/pinterest-1fc6e.html, I am redirected to http://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0188/7378/files/pinterest-1fc6e.html

Unfortunately, we can only verify you if we can find the file at www.satyatea.com/pinterest-1fc6e.html.

I recommend trying this Shopify workaround again.

How can I add URL Redirect?

Well, this is interesting.
Files are in Admin Settings, and URL Redirects are at the bottom on Links, but as Pinterest told me, that isn't working anymore.

I found a simple solution if you don't mind doing it, where I pointed my domain back at it's original server, through up the Pinterest file, so it read (example): http://www.satyatea.com/pinterest.html. At that point I had actually tried to verify with pinterest too many times and they put a hold on my account, so I started a new account, repinned everything from the old to the new, verified it through my domain (now pointing back at my server) in less than a second and did a quick username swap, so my new pinterest account had the old username and all my links to it (from my website) were the same.

Whole process took about 4-6 hours, including time to switch domain to old server and back to Shopify!

Hi all. This solution is great but not possible on Shopify Admin 2 because URL redirect has shop name as prefix, therefore it's impossible to link to a cdn.shopify.com or any other URL that is not within shop domain. I eventually verified my website on Piterest using meta tags.

@Satya Tea, thanks for pointing that out. Looks like there's no shortcut for verifying until shopify team will fix it.

@Vladimir using, meta tags? could you please clarify that? How?

To verify by meta tags, go to https://help.pinterest.com/entries/22488487 for instructions how to get the code, and and then just add it as any other meta tag into your theme.liquid page. Feel free to let me know if you need better explanation.

@Vladimir, I am fairly clueless when it comes to this.....so I am in theme.liquid. Would you be able to specifically point out where in the code I should add in the meta tags for pinterest? I see it says in the <head> section, and before the <body>, but where specifically? Any help would be greatly appreciated!! thanks!

Goina upload a screenshot, maybe you could circle where it should go if that would be easiest :)

To use the meta tag verification simply edit theme.liquid and add the metatag to the head section (up top) and then save your changes.

Now that Pinterest has their metatag verification worked out that little guide I put together should be completely unnecessary now. Just follow the pinterest guide here:

https://help.pinterest.com/entries/22488487-Verify-with-HTML-meta-tags

And go to your theme editor and edit theme.liquid. Add the metatag to theme.liquid where all of your other metatags are. You should be good to go.

I would like to add that I used this same method Jamie posted about to complete the verification process for The Find.

Same thing, upload the file, create the redirect, confirm on The Find's side, and it's complete!

Thanks!

PS

I am having the same problem with the meta tag verification method.  Each time I go back to Pinterest to verify my site, I get the message "Trouble verifying your doimain. Please try again later."  This has been ongoing for weeks now.  Have inquired with Pinterst to no avail.  They have not responded to my issue.  So I have no idea what is wrong.  I worked with the Shopify Guru to add the meta tag, so we know that it is correctly placed on my shopify site.

Anyone else have a fix for this problem?

I'd need to wait until I get a job that needs this task before I can test it - hopefully you guys sort it out.

Not that it should matter but make sure you are entering the domain as per your store setup. So if your default store domain is http://somedomain.com don't enter it as http://www.somedomain.com (or vice versa). Who knows, that might might a difference on the pinterest end.

Jason, brilliant!  That was the issue.  Thanks for the tip. The domian I entered for verification on Pinterest was http://www.gillianneal.com.  I changed it to http://gillianneal.com (saved) re-generated the meta tag, and pasted it into the liquid template file (saved).  Then went back to Pinterest to verify.  To my great relief I finally saw that ellusive little checkmark beside my URL!

As a side note, I'm actually surprised that the Shopify Guru from their support team was unable to provide this solution.

I was able to verify my site with the meta tag by using two helpful tips I found above. I temporarily removed my storefront password protection (my online store is not ready for business yet), and I made sure Pinterest was verifying http://mysite.com and not www.mysite.com. Although I still got the error message, it was verified!

I am trying ALL methods listed on this page and still hitting a brick wall getting Pinterest to verify. To make matters more frustrating, Pinterest keeps telling me I've tried too many times and to try back later.

I've uploaded the HTML file, removed the numbers at the end of html and also written in the meta tag code below the <head> listing on theme.liquid. This does, indeed, seem like a Fail Whale, as someone above called it, on Pinterests' part.

Is there a free Shopify app that just adds the code?

After a few wasted hours on this and after finally succeeding and getting verified.  I pinged the awesome guys at Elto.com (formally Tweaky.com) who specialise in website tweaks and optimisations.  Straight away they put together a great little deal for doing this for you.  $39 and it gets done and you concentrate on other things.  Hope it helps https://www.elto.com/services/get-your-shopify-store-verified-by-pinterest

Matthew - did you take note of my earlier post above? That's usually the main hurdle people forget.

make sure you are entering the domain as per your store setup. So if your default store domain is http://somedomain.com don't enter it as http://www.somedomain.com (or vice versa).

I also don't see the verification metatag on your site as noted in step 3:

I can't get this to work for the life of me. I've tried removing the numbers, changing the address around... everything it seems and I can't try the meta tag option because I am just starting out so I have the lowest priced shopify account which means apparently that I don't get to have access to my html code... (ridiculous btw because half the tools available to entrepreneurs out there require adding code to your site.) I am at a loss as to what to do. You would think this would be easier. It's just verifying you are the owner of the site, not rocket science. Can you tell how frustrated I am??

Adding the meta tag into the header is just a quick copy and paste that will take 5 seconds. No special skills required for that so my two cents would be to just DIY.

Hi Jason and Nick,

Thank you so much for your replies.

Nick - Can Tweaky do the verify if I am on a starter pack do you know?

Hi Louise, Jason is right and this is why Shopify is the absolute premier e comm platform.  This is basically free advice from them and I did it myself for free.  But how do you value your time? Tweaky is an independent service from Shopify. I had so much trouble myself before seeing the helpful guide I asked them to put together a package.  To be honest it hasn't done much for our Pinterest traffic...not really sure why they even offer it!

Correct. Unless I hear otherwise, template editing is not available on the starter theme. Without that ability you - nor anyone - can add that meta tag. That said, I've never had a client on the starter plan so I've never been able to test what can and can't be done myself. Would be happy to test on someones store for sheer curiosity.

Can Tweaky do the verify if I am on a starter pack do you know?

No. If you can't - they can't.

Hi Nick, Thanks for your advice, I would still realy like to get this sorted so will keep trying. I am wondering if I should do it through the company I bought the webname with as that is who I did the google verify through - I amended the DNS record through them.

Will try that and see how I get on.

Hi Louise, I hadn't seen a starter pack plan before and wasn't aware you couldn't modify the theme files.  I'm not sure what stage you are at but the more competent you get them more bits and pieces you will be able to add into your theme files.  I used to spend a fortune getting things done which took a developer 2 minutes.  Now I do little things myself and get Elto.com to do my bigger tweaks.  So perhaps it might be worth upgrading to the next plan up, it may save you long term.  I feel your pain with this Pinterest thing. I spent half a day on it.  It got beyond a necessity and became a challenge I had to overcome.  Plus it kept telling me I had used up my allotted attempts.  Try the Elto guys as you only pay if they can do it.  It's pretty simple for them!

If you're going to post a link to that method, may as well use the official one.
http://docs.shopify.com/manual/configuration/store-customization/social-media/verify-with-file-uploads

Not sure if that works with the starter plan (which the recent comments are about) but there's no doubt someone will give it a test and report back.

Jason and Nick - all working now. I have upgraded and followed above instructions to add code after <head> before <body>, tried to verify again and pinterest had the cheek to tell me I was already verified!! Anyway finally got there so just wanted to say thank you.

Thank you for the update!

Does anyone know if we already have a Pinterest business account and Shopify is the Rich Pins feature automatically enabled or do we have to do something to enable? Thx.

@Felix, You have a great resource http://shopifymasters.org/ -- I just spent the last 20 minutes reading various blog posts.

Hi Felix, Thank you. I signed up on ShopifyMasters. I love hearing how savvy entrepreneurs get their companies up and running. I just finished the Bees Knees Spicy Honey podcast. I have to admit, it's frustrating to see a brand new store getting this much traffic with one product. I have hundreds and have been on Shopify for over a year. I work on SEO daily. I'm active on social media (Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Istagram, Google+ and Tumblr). What am I missing?

Hi Cheri,

It's really tough to say without doing a full analysis of your marketing.  One thing I hear over and over again from successful Shopify store owners is that they spent a lot of time connecting with influencers in their community and they always say they wish they did it sooner and more often.  Make sure you're doing that.

Please add me on Skype.  We can chat more about your current marketing strategy.  My skype name is: felix.thea

If anyone else wants to chat about ecommerce marketing add me :)

@Sami Did you follow this?
http://business.pinterest.com/en/verify-your-website

Your site does not have a meta tag so I'm curious what steps you took.

Hi Jason,

Thanks so much for getting back so quickly, I have just added again the meta tag, under <head> in theme.liquid, I think this is correct, but could have it in the wrong place. Tried again to verify store on Pinterest but it didn't work.

What domain are you validating? http://figbowl.com or http://www.figbowl.com?
Make sure it's the same domain you've got setup as the primary domain in Shopify.

Hi,

I tried both the Metatag and uploading the file but I can't get it to work. The Metatag is in the 'theme.liquid' file.

I tried https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0576/6545/files/pinterest-ad843.html as redirection link and /pinterest-ad843.html as the old path. And (something I found on the Pinterest website) https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0576/6545/files/pinterest-ad843.html as redirection and /pinterest-96bfa.html as old path.

I'm also sure that I'm using the primary domain www.deeflighting.com

Please tell me what I'm doing wrong!

Hi Evelien, I've been struggling with it for ages to and just managed to crack it. It was such a small thing as well that was causing the trouble for me. The domain you have registered on pinterest has to match you primary domain on shopify, which I thought mine did, except for a / at the end on my pinterest account. So frustrating, as soon as I deleted the / it automatically verified. Might be worth checking yours for that incase it's the same problem. It's under settings and domains on shopify and under account on pinterest. Hope that helps!

Thanks for the tip Claire! Apparently pinterest changes it to http://www.deeflighting.com and my primary domain is www.deeflighting.com. But it is still not working..

Any other suggestions?

@DEEF - you've got two pinterest verification codes on your page - is that what you intended?

<meta name="p:domain_verify" content="e315b7cab6fc4fd1e180cdeffb069ace"/>
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0576/6545/t/3/assets/favicon.png?1249" type="image/png" />
<meta charset="utf-8">
<!--[if IE]><meta http-equiv='X-UA-Compatible' content='IE=edge,chrome=1'><![endif]-->
<meta name="p:domain_verify" content="be182a11dacee5b69745cc1f05eae1f0"/>

hi,

I have read all the above information and it has got me confused what is the current steps to follow to get pinterest verification. I have a pinterest business account. I have inserted the meta tag in theme.liquid. When finishing the verification on pinterest I get the message " oops Trouble verifying your domain. Please try again later." I understand it might have to do with the domain name. Please let me know how to proceed.

thanks

Used the upload a file method and created a redirect; I'm getting this: https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0589/2217/files/pinterest-4b012.html?8588

But Pinterest is still telling me it's "having trouble, try again later."

Finally, I got the problem solved by sending a support request to pinterest support team and they solved the problem for me. they processed the verification without having to go in the shopify backoffice. Recommended !

Hi folks,

I have followed each of the steps to verify my website using the redirect method but I'm still getting the error message from Pinterest. The file is uploaded and being redirected properly distintos.com.br/pinterest-f77b2.html, but the site was not yet verified.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Andre

I don't know if you've tried this or not, but I was having the same problem and emailed Pinterest and they verified my site on their end.

I am like all of you. I have tried everything. How do you send pinterest the support request? I don't see where you can contact them.
