No sales after months - visits okay. Advise needed This post is outdated

Hi, I have been with Shopify for several months now and still no sales! I am getting visits and tried offering sales to see if price point was an issue but still nothing. I am worried the site is not working very well as I have an App to record movements and I can see people add to cart but then abandon. I am now worried I have chosen the wrong template, or worried the site isn't working at all! Any suggestions please?

Hi Astrid

First things first, to address your last concern. Have you run a test transaction? Have you tried purchasing something yourself, or asking a friend to buy something, to confirm that everything from the cart to the payment gateway to confirmation notification is actually functioning? At a minimum doing that would remove that small bit of anxiety that there may be a functional issue.

Your site itself looks pretty good. I have no real concerns with the layout and you do a good job of articulating the value of Peruvian cotton. You also have some social proof with the magazine mentions. All the big components seem to be there. You can always fine tune, but nothing jumps out as glaringly wrong.

Which bring me to the meat of your problem. Lack of conversions. Working backwards from the cart abandons. Do you have an abandoned cart solution in place? If not you should try that. And if you're cost conscious (depending on your SHopify subscription) you may be able to DiY a soluion at no cost http://docs.shopify.com/manual/your-store/orders/abandoned-orders

If you are getting a lot of abandon carts then that might be a quick win.

Now in terms of your traffic and shoppers. The industry average for conversion rate on traffic is about 1-2%. So if you want a target to get to, that would be it.

Where are your visitors coming from? That's the most important question to ask. If you're getting organic search traffic, is it coming from search terms that have to do with children's clothing? If they are referral sfrom otehr sites are they sites catering to parents, etc... The "better" your source of traffic and the more targetted the more likely you will be to getinto that 1-2% conversion range.

Just some food for thought. If you have any answers to the question above maybe we can dig in a little deeper topic by topic.

Astrid- great products.  A few fixes should make people more confident in completing purchases:

CONTRADICTORY FREE SHIPPING INFO- The site says free shipping worldwide, but when I add an item to the cart, it says "Price excludes delivery, which is applied at checkout".  On your delivery and returns page, it says that there is a shipping charge outside of the EU. The contradictory info would stop me from proceeding with a purchase.

PRICES UNCLEAR- the prices only show up in the add to cart button, which is a bit confusing.  When you hover over the CART link at the top of the page, the items show in the cart at a totally different (higher price) than the price on the product page and reads as some sort of a trick (I know it's just a glitch).

HOME PAGE: Top image is too large and the content is eating up a lot of real estate without giving me what I am looking for as a buyer.  Info like guaranteed by Christmas and guaranteed satisfaction can be added to your header so that I can see the first products and prices without having to scroll down.

I'm not going to assess the website from a usability standpoint.  In the last 7 & 30 days www.oxygenplus.ca has consistently been 3-4% conversion rate.  Some days, like yesterday almost 7% and some none.  One thing that has really ramped up our business in terms of sales, other than the usual creating a Google Webmaster account & tweaking content for some better SEO results (Google 20-30% of Traffic) is mirroring offsite promotion activities.  We have sold product at 2 physical events and handed out promo codes for redemption online after the event.  Sales can also come from trust and being exposed to your website through a bunch of different touchpoints (i.e. posting deals on Bargainmoose in Canada or similar in your area, having blog write ups & giveaways).  There is a suggestion that there may be some misleading messaging in the site & sticker shock at checkout - that definitely needs to be eliminated if that's the case.  We have also found that the app Coupon Pop really helps to save sales from people who are leaving or adding a discount into the abandon cart message that comes from Shopify to get them to finish off their transaction.  Also a Refer a Friend feature does exceptionally well.

Using social media can be a fantastic tool for driving traffic to your website, if our first year we used free advertising on Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram and Twitter to drive over 50,000 visits to our store, we did very little paid advertising as we didn't have the budget to do so.

You need to be relentless with it, traffic will not come just because you have a website, you really need to market your product. Contact bloggers, news papers, magazines and see if you can convince them to feature you, even if it means sending them samples and such.

Jamie's advice above is really great. Getting traffic and sales to your store is an ongoing (and labor intensive) job.

Hi Astrid,

Is everything OK now? I take notice that you have a big problem with abandon carts, and it's our clients problem too, so I think I could help you like what I help them.

What you need now is to give customer a reason to fisish their carts, an offer (fre shipping, discount,...) for example. You can try to use Checkout Boost App for FREE TRIAL. It will not only encourage them to finish their carts to catch your offers, but it will also help you reach more new customers on social networks.

After that, you can use Better Coupon Box, (totally FREE) to increase your traffic even more.

If price was not an issue then please check content of your website.You can try to use discount or voucher code with your site. This will help to increase popularity of your Website.

Well, I would like to have a look on your website. Without any look, I can't optimize your points. Apart from this, just check it out your website and content, because, as we know that content is the King. After that, you need to go with advertising your product as well as website by Google Ads or SEO/SMM, so that most of the visitors can easily visit your website.
