My first e-commerce foray - seeking advice

Hello everyone!

I will be soon launching a side business that will sell gourmet/premium coffee. We are now finalizing the branding/packaging and expect to be operational in the summer.

We will launch with either 1 or 2 products at first (as we'll be focusing on a high-value niche), and will react/grow from there.

I am here to seek advice on tools and resources:
* I will need an ecommerce presence, and seek something that'll allow me to have a premium theme, and simple enough for just hosting 1 or 2 products to start. Will at a minimum need credit card integration, and ease of integrating with SEO / google analytics / social media. It will also need to reflect the premium aspect of the products listed (almost like a perfume website). I'm cuurrently eyeing both Shopify and WooCommercem, but as this is a Shopify forum, are there any particular themes you'd recommend that'd be suitable to emphasize the 1-2 products that'll be listed, and will focus more on the "story" of the products/brand? (if you've used both Shopify and WooCommerce in the past, would appreciate your input as to how they compared)
* I will be spending a lot of my focus on social media and mail campaigns. I've come across Hootsuite, Buffer, and MailChimp. Any thoughts on those or any others? Any best practices on managing social media, especially for product sales? Any thoughts on what's best ROI in terms of time/money investment (fb, instagram, snapchat, youtube, twitter etc)
* I will also be approaching social media influencers relevant to my region (middle east). Any tools/best practices on how to identify them, and best way to approach them / work with them?
* Regarding SEO - that's a new area for me that I'll need to get good at quickly. Any recommended courses or tools?

Thank you in advance!

Hey there,

I'm Ann, from the team here at Shopify :)

It's amazing to hear that you're considering Shopify for your upcoming side business! While I can't help with some of these questions, I can definitely answer a couple! For starters, we have all our themes organized based on store types. In this case, I would recommend browsing the 'Food and Drink' section here, and seeing if any of those appeal to you!

Secondly, regarding SEO, we have a few guides that can help here! Check these out:

I hope this helps! If you have any more questions or concerns feel free to reach out to us on this thread :)

Have a great one,
Ann

"I will also be approaching social media influencers relevant to my region (middle east). Any tools/best practices on how to identify them, and best way to approach them / work with them?" - perhaps search (on instagram / twitter/etc) keywords and hashtags in your country language, see who's coming on top of the search, follow them daily for a while, and then hire the one you like the best to do word-of-mouth for you.

Thank you all for the responses!

Two quick followup questions:

- Are there general/standardised pricings for SM Influencers (or any good guide on that matter?)

- It seems that the preference is to use Shopify's payment gateway, otherwise there's an added % charge per item sold (ontop of the CC fee). Now, this makes sense for countries in which the service exists. Is it also the same for countries in which the Shopify payment service does not exist at the moment (such as the middle east)? Is there any way out of the 2% transaction fee? As a startup, every penny counts!

Thank you once again

Hey again,

I can help clear up the questions for payment gateways! At this time, Shopify Payments is only available in a few countries- the United States, Puerto Rico, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and Singapore. That said, we're definitely working on bringing this gateway to more people in the future!

In the meantime, for other countries, you would need to use a third party payment gateway. Depending on the country you're located, we do have a list of gateways we integrate with. If you need a hand finding that list, let me know what country you're in and I can pull it up for you! That said, in cases where you do need to use a third party gateway, you would be subjected to our transaction fees- there is no work around for this I'm afraid. These fees start at 2% per order on our Basic plan and get cut in half as you upgrade to higher plans.

I hope this clears things up, let me know if you have more questions :)

Have a great one,
Ann
