Upcoming change to API response status code for locked stores

Currently Admin API requests to locked stores return a 420 status code. As of Thursday August 30th this response will change to 423. We're pushing this change in order to reduce ambiguity around the 420 response code and ensure our responses are as accurate as possible.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reply in the thread below.

Hi Kieran,

Could you provide some clarity on what "locked" means for a store status vs other shop statuses such as frozen or canceled?

I've seen the API return 402 payment required for "frozen" shops, and also 404 I am guessing when a shop cancels.

I don't see a mention of a 420 (or 423) status here: https://help.shopify.com/en/api/getting-started/response-status-codes.

Thanks,

Tom

Hi Tom,

Thanks for your reply. A change to the response code docs has been deployed and now includes a description of the 423 status. If a store returns a 423 it means that the store has been locked by Shopify and there are various reasons we can take this action.

Thanks,

Kieran

OK thanks Kiernan.  So is it safe to say we should treat "locked" shops similar to "frozen" and assume they might come back later, or they may never come back?

Hi Kieran,

Did you mean HTTP `402 Payment Required` is switching to `423 Locked`? `420` is a status code in a particular community but definitely not in the HTTP status code list. Hopefully that clears up some confusion for others.

Hi bardia,

Thanks for your reply. No confusion in this case, we currently send 420 for stores in this state but as of Thursday August 30th we will respond with 423.

Cheers,

Kieran
