Prevent provincial sales tax on children's clothes This post is outdated

Hi there! Here in Ontario, we don't charge provincial sales tax on children's clothes. My shop sells children's clothes, but it also sells other products to which provincial sales tax does apply. I can't figure out how to implement this in the Shopify admin. Any advice? Thanks in advance for your help! Dave

Since we cannot play with taxes to that degree yet, maybe the following workaround will help???

Price your kids clothes so that with tax, they cost the same as they would without tax.

Let the person checkout as usual. Shopify only shows a subtotal anyway on the cart.. and there, on the cart.. when there are childrens clothes present.. simply make a prominent alert that for this order, for the time being, the checkout process will show a tax calculation, but that it is not being applied. It is for decoration.

You can customize the order confirmation so that childrens clothes do not include any taxes.. only the amount paid.. so that to the customer.. the only confirmation they have contains no tax for kids clothes…

Since you have to make up the final invoice anyway.. you can also ditch the tax there as well.. so in the end, the customer has no documentation that they paid tax on kids clothes..

It’s a hack for sure, but I don’t see why you can’t use it until Shopify supports this kind of exception…

Any thoughts?

Dave

What if you set your prices up as tax included as Bill says but use a “ifelse” statement to put “tax included” after the taxed products but not after the kids.
if product.collection = kids put ' ' else put 'tax included'

Then somewhere, in checkout maybe, have a statement saying that all prices include tax unless otherwise stated.

However, I don’t know if this effects other Canadian taxes (I’m in the US)

Hi guys,

Thanks so much for the suggestions, but the Canadian tax situation for children’s clothing requires product-level control and regional control. Provincial tax varies from province to province, in terms of both amount and the types of products that are exempt.

This is a total showstopper. After discussing with my client, I’m going to shut down the Shopify account and go with Zen Cart.

But thanks again for your ideas. All the best,
Dave
