CNAME with Hostgator This post is outdated

I'm having serious issues replacing my blah.shopify.com domain with my newly purchased blah.com domain. My new domain was purchased with godaddy but is hosted with hostgator. In the hostgator cpanel, you go to simple DNS Zone editor and have the option of either adding a new A record or CNAME record. Under add CNAME record, there is a field for Name, and a field for CNAME. I've added the blah.myshopify.com url in the CNAME field. Under the name field, the system was being a little tricky and wouldn't let me simply put www like many forums suggest. I therefore ended up putting shopify.blah.com in hopes that it was just a name and didn't really affect much.

How long do these changes normally take to propagate ?

When I go to myshopify dns domain preferences to add this new domain as my primary domain, I get "failed" under DNS rather than 'Ok." The instructions provided online are pretty unclear. Please advise

I would probably tell you to use the godaddy DNS server. Always better to keep the DNS with the registrar when you can. May hosts have subpar DNS tools and many do not have any forwarding/redirect mechanism. Have you looked at the wiki for the set-up instructions? Specifically this page: http://wiki.shopify.com/DomainManager

When using godaddy DNS servers I have seen these changes go through in 1/2 hour in most cases.
