2 new stores.... This post is outdated

I have setup one Shopify store, and have now had a request from someone on advice on setting up a new business... This has created some questions in my mind on how best to approach this and whether Shopify is the best solution. They have a business selling cremation urns.. They need two web presence from the same inventory. I can setup two stores, was just wondering if anyone had a better idea since it would be great to run it from one set of inventory. One web presence would be in Canada, in Canadian dollars and the other one we in the US selling in US dollars. Any thoughts other than two stores?? The second issue that is related is as follows. The US store can sell to the world except for Canada. The Canadian store will ONLY sell to Funeral Homes... Any thoughts on how best to deal with that?? The third issue is how best to approach the selling of inscription engravings?? The selling of the urns is easy... I can even sell the engraving... Is there an easy way to allow the end users to indicate what the engraving should be within the sell cycle?? The fourth issue is that the Funeral homes would buy multiple times.. So now there is the need for retaining shipping info etc, so having the ability to "register" would be very useful.... The person has sort of looked at ebay stores.. Looks expensive, but may have some features.... Thoughts anyone?? Thanks. Julian....

It seems you have to setup two stores. It is not that big of a deal to do, although it is a shame you cannot connect more than one store to an inventory. The same problem occurs with bilingual stores.

The second issue that is related is as follows. The US store can sell to the world except for Canada. The Canadian store will ONLY sell to Funeral Homes… Any thoughts on how best to deal with that??

Usually your credit card merchant account/gateway will be able to refuse cards from one country or the other. If you make the message clear on the sites, no one should have trouble following the rules.

The third issue is how best to approach the selling of inscription engravings?? The selling of the urns is easy… I can even sell the engraving… Is there an easy way to allow the end users to indicate what the engraving should be within the sell cycle??

Engraving on a per product basis is very easy. You can create a very snappy and nice interface for custom engraving using a little design and javascript.

The fourth issue is that the Funeral homes would buy multiple times.. So now there is the need for retaining shipping info etc, so having the ability to “register” would be very useful….

That is a bit of a tough one. Perhaps relying on a browser that can memorize forms from sites would be the best. There does not appear to be any real support for repeat shoppers at the moment, although adding that would not be a big deal if the shopping cart read from some reliable cookies. You could then save shipping info as long-term cookies.

Hope that helps…

HunkyBill, thanks for your comments… Two stores it will be.. And clear writing it will be for the differentiation of the stores.
Does anyone know if using Paypal Pro, or Google Checkout solve the repeat customers issue??
And whilst I understand some Java Script would allow for entering engraving’s, how would I pass the information the buyer typed in for the engraving to the order?? And does anyone have a little javascript they would be willing to share as a basis of how this might be done??
Thanks.

Hi,

Don’t sweat the custom engraving code. I have lots of great code for that and can set you up. Send me an email and we can discuss, I can show you examples etc.

All custom engraving is available for each product in the administrative order processing and display. You can clearly see what people have selected there.

Dave
