editing product description doesn't work... in EITHER version

Hi,

I sell vintage clothing and I must enter a unique description for each item. I've complained from the start that the so-called text editor really isn't a text editor, as the bulk of the functions buttons are merely decorative, and have no actual impact on how the description shows up in my shop. Simply getting the line spacing correct takes an eternity. I can't change font size. I can change the color, and that may or may not actually work, depending on the alignment of the planets on that particular day. I've tried working in HTML (despite the fact that I'm paying quite a bit of money to use your hosting platform precisely because I'm NOT a computer programmer!), but even those changes don't "take." Yes, I click "save."

I've tried the beta version, hoping it would be at least a small improvement. Instead, it's worse. Now I can see less of what I'm working on at one time, and when I went to edit a product description, although I could manipulate the text, none of the editing buttons were visible. I can't change anything but the words themselves (and I don't know the HTML coding for specific colors or font sizes, etc., nor should I have to learn them when there's a text editor to serve that purpose!).

I have to say, I overall dislike the layout and "look" of the beta. It's just harder to "see" somehow, and more difficult to find what I'm looking for. If the function were an improvement, that might make it easier to swallow. But it's not.

Meanwhile, I can't seem to do the simplest task (which I know HOW to do, but the editor won't allow me to do it or accept the commands I give it, in EITHER version): I want to correctly space some photos and photo credits I've inserted into the body of my product description. Should this really be something that takes 45 minutes and never actually works correctly? As is, it looks awful. See it here: http://www.betterdressesvintage.com/products/50s-cream-wool-crochet-shawl

I can't get the photos evenly spaced, with properly aligned and smaller-text descriptions beneath them. Really, this isn't a complicated task. It should be simple and the functions should work.

We're working to improve the editor but to set expectations, I don't think we'll solve the problem that you're specifically having. The problem is that the editor is abstracted from your actual site. You're editing content in one place that is under completely different constraints than where it appears on your site.

The way your site looks in the browser is handled by CSS, a technology for styling HTML. We use different CSS in the editor than the CSS that is loaded on your site. Fonts, colours, and spacing may all be different between the editor and your web site. As a result, you can add things in the editor and what you see may be completely different once you view that content in your site.

I do hope that we can improve the editor in Shopify 2 to the point where the frustration is at least lessened.

Thank you for the feedback.

Well I understand what you're saying, although it's hard to believe it could be true. After all, the THEME was a Shopify theme, the PROGRAMMER was recommended to me by Shopify because he knows all about the Shopify platform. Your own salesperson provided his name. He wrote the code within YOUR theme, on YOUR platform. So why would it be incompatible? It's not as if he transferred a bunch of foreign stuff from an outside source. This was an "inside job." It should work.

It's not that they're incompatible but that they are difficult to predict. The editor is built to create content that can go into any template created by any programmer using any theme. Even themes created by Shopify can be changed and done so in ways that we just can't predict. That flexibility to customize the store gives shop owners a lot of power (which they love) but it comes at the sacrifice of making it harder for us to create a 1:1 connection between the editor and what you see on your live site. It's not an impossible problem to solve but it is harder than you might think.

Liza, I would contact your theme developer. They probably neglected to add styles in the CSS for your rich text editor content. That's what it looks like to me and that is a quick thing to fix.

Say, Jamie... if it's quick and easy and you know what's wrong, could YOU fix it? Please?

And didn't I just email you recently for help?

So, Jamie? how about some help?

If you have time to troll the boards telling us how easy it is to fix, then how about I pay you to fix it?

I am dead serious. Find me at Better Dresses Vintage. DOT COM.
