Submit your Shopify sites here for a free review from SEO and usability standpoints:

Hello everyone!

This topic is created to help online stores which experience any SEO / Marketing issues or would like to get some tips on how to market the store online and how to improve it. We will be talking about many different sales channels at our webinars.

So here is what I suggest - every month I will be running a webinar session devoted particularly to the issues of SEO, UX and online promotion of the Shopify sites that you guys submit here. I will collect all the sites, analyze them, find some weak places and will showcase what should be done at those sites during a live session after which we will have a Q&A where you will be able to put me all the rest of the questions that might remain unanswered.

I do hope it would work for you and I am looking forward to tackling this fascinating challenge ;)

So to sum up, what you need to do to get your site reviewed:

  • Find my latest post with the sign up link to the closest webinar (I update the link in this first post regularly too)
  • Sign up for the webinar, where I will be doing a review of the weak points of all the sites submitted for webinar review
  • That's it! Just follow the email reminders and don't miss the session :)

Please let me know if you have any comments!

The next session is about to start in a couple of weeks, December the 18th, 2014 - 9 am PDT - kindly hurry up to get your sit.

P.S.

Though if you for some reason you do not want to get public review of your site, or you'd like to give us access to your Analytics for some deeper research and review, you can send us personal request via our website here:

Thank you for all Shopify users to support this movement!

Hello Tanay!

Well let’s start off with page titles. You page titles should contain keywords for which you would like to be ranked in the search results. To achieve this firstly run a keywords research – please see this infographics http://www.promodo.com/blog/keyword-research-process-infographics and this post about keyword selection website-promotion">http://www.promodo.com/blog/how-to-select-effective-keywords-for-website-promotion. Select keywords for each page separately, try to make them fit your content or alter the content in order to meet users’ needs – it is important as it will affect your conversion rate.

After you have decided on keywords, rewrite the titles, ideally their length should be around 60-65 characters and title should contain several important keywords for which you would like to be ranked. It is important because during ranking process Google checks page titles as well as headings with H1 and H2 tag. So make sure that headings contain keywords you selected for promotion. This is the site where you will be able to check how your titles and description will look in the search results http://seo-website-designer.com/Google-SERP-Emulator. ; Please be careful with keywords cause their overuse is very dangerous, you might get penalized.

Optimization for keywords doesn’t end there J You should also optimize texts for keywords you have selected. Text is a must have for every page you would like to be promoted. If the text contains keywords it signals the search robot that your page is valid to the user’s search query. Product pages,  for example  http://www.pinatacasa.com/collections/animal-pinatas/products/angry-birds-bird-pinata have more or less ok amount of content, probably just a little bit more. But product category pages http://www.pinatacasa.com/collections/animal-pinatas don’t seem to have enough text – make sure to add some content and optimize for corresponding keywords.

One more important note: I am not able to check it as I don’t have access to Webmaster Tools, but just in case -  your website shouldn’t have pages with similar titles  - Google will consider this as duplicates and decrease the rankings, similarly, text should unique for each particular page.

I have also noticed that on your website the same page could be opened for two different URLs, with / at the end and without it    http://www.pinatacasa.com/collections/all-pinatas  ; and http://www.pinatacasa.com/collections/all-pinatas/ ; – it is duplicate which endangers your website rankings. Set redirect  from one version to another.

I have also noticed that you have a separate page for penata news. Why don’t you turn it into full blog?  Publish there articles regularly and if possible also optimize them for some low-search- volume keywords. Chances are that some share of users will come to your site through the blog.

If any questions, feel free to ask

Hi Tucker,

Sorry for keeping you waiting for so long. I have reviewed your site and I really like it, the idea and the look of it :)
Unfortunately, I know a little bit less than nothing on art, but I tried to think of some keywords that would be relevant to your site. I think you could start with some combinations like
art print
art prints
modern art prints
art print poster
art print posters

and the like to optimize your homepage. Try using https://adwords.google.com/ko/KeywordPlanner/ to check for the most popular keywords on your topic. In general you are going to need around 10-15 key phrases relevant to your home page to optimize it for the search bots (check this infographic for best practices of keyword selection http://bit.ly/XvO9IW). After you have defined your keywords you will need to include them in the title tag of the home page, h1 tag and mention them in the page content.
And to mention them in the home page content, you will need to create that content on the page in the first place :) You see, to perform well in the search engines you need to provide the search bots with the info about your site in the language that they would understand, and as for now Googlebot and other search bots are not that good at deciphering images you need to put everything in words. So if I were you I would add more static text to your homepage (at least 300-500 words) that would explain what is this site about and how are you planning to develop it and include in the text your key phrases or SEO.
As for now you have very few products you might not have realized the problem yet, but you will, as soon as the site gets bigger. And the problem is - search bots are having hard time finding your product pages. In order for them to be able to find your product pages easily, you need to provide direct simple html links to your products from the home page, preferrably in the main site navigation.
Besides that, you've got duplicate pages all over your site, like for example http://www.prinnnt.com/collections/frontpage/bear#.Uh3pIBs55tY and http://www.prinnnt.com/collections/all/bear#.Uh3pJBs55tY those two have the same content the difference is in the title. But the difference between those pages is not evident either for users or for the search engine bots. You need either to make the purpose of those pages clearer or delete one type of such pages and leave just the other.
Then you certainly need more text content everywhere, I mean like http://www.prinnnt.com/pages/artists for example, just two links? really? Add some general text about print artists or print designers and include "print artists" and "print designers" in the copy as your relevant keywords.
Also you need to work on your page titles, the are too short, most of them have just 2 words one of which is the site name. It looks poor in the search results pages (check the screenshot) and is bad for SEO, as titles carry zero information for the search bots. Try to come up with longer and interesting titles for each page and remember to include your keywords there. You can test how your site is going to look like in the SERPs (search results pages) with this tool - http://seo-website-designer.com/Google-SERP-Emulator ;
And of course to get some visibility in the search engines you need to start building backlinks to your site, with the project like yours it should not be too defficult, you can contact bloggers that have art as their hobby and ask them to write a review or you can simply provide some content to them in exchange for a link. You could also make a good presence on Stumpleupon with your project.

This should be enough for starters, hope I managed to help a bit :)

Hello Carmen,

Generally your website looks nice and is quite easy to use. Though there’s also space for improvements:

We’d recommend you to add a main menu with products by type (dress, jacket, skirt, swimsuit, etc.) on your homepage. It would be more comfortable for users (especially when you extend your product range) and help you benefit from SEO point of view. Categorization by product type (dress, swimsuit, etc.) is more important rather than by Preorder/In Stock option. If your visitors like an item first, they will be more likely to leave a pre-order request.

Besides categorization by colour, motive (like bunny, floral etc.) is excessive and confuses users.

It is better to make your homepage banner more informative. If you want to let people know what your website is about – you should make this message obvious here. If you want your banners sell particular products – do let visitors know it (for example by adding item name, price or even “Buy” button).

This is a minor issue but it would be better if your homepage banner slider parts have the same size.

The menu (Home, Preorder, etc.) would be more clickable if you do it bigger. Active item should differ so that users better understand where they are at the moment on your website.

Handwritten font looks nice on your logo and on product pages where it has big size. But in your Search function and below product icons on your homepage it is hard to read.

It’s not necessary to write “Bel Amour Designs” under each item on your homepage. It would make sense if you sell different brands. And now it makes additional “noise” and overloads the page with information. Instead, it would be better to replace it with preorder/in stock label or even 2 different buttons Pre-order and Buy.

As for Pre-order/In Stock option we’d recommend you to hide these options and make 2 different buttons instead: Pre-order and Buy.

It would be useful to indicate country of origin and stuff/fabric for each item.

The whole Pre-order process via Facebook looks quite complicated. Why not replace it with order form similar to those one published on your Contact us page? Besides it would be useful to let users know the timeframe for their order fulfillment right on the product page.

You have advantages like worldwide shipping with a fixed cost for delivery and free returns. Why not highlighting them on your homepage and on your product pages?

SEO

First of all you need to optimize your project towards relevant keywords to help Google associate your project with those keywords. This is the main issue from SEO point of view for your project. For this you should make keyword research and then fill your title tag and page content with relevant keywords. Please check the reply from Elena Ruchko to Tanay Mehta below in this thread on how to do it. Elena has explained how to do it and provided links to additional tutorials on this topic.

I hope my post helps you :) If something in my post is not quite clear or you need additional advice – feel free to post questions here or contact me directly at contact@promodo.com.

Good luck with your project!

Hello Ashley!

There are three key elements which help your website get promoted in the search results – page titles which contain keywords, heading with H1 tags containing keywords and inbound links leading to your site with right anchor text.

In this discussion posts we have already mentioned how to optimize the titles and headings for the keywords, so please check the posts above.  I would say you need to choose around 10 main keywords for each page and then incorporate them in the titles, texts and headings. For headings use no more than 1-2 keywords.

I have checked what keyword you could use – there is plenty of options . Please see the image I attach. This is as an example.  And you really can make the use of long keywords, such as “american flag high waisted shorts” – they show very specific user need and this is great because you have more chances to meet this need and get conversion.

As to usability side, I would advise to align all the links at the top in one line – I mean those home, about us, tops…. By the way, About Us link I would recommend to place somewhere in separate place, for example, at the right top corner.

Next, I love your jeans shorts (honestly!) they look fabulous, but this main picture on the main page is too large, user has to scroll down a lot to see the items and information. At the same time you should write more content for the page cause it is too little and you won’t be able to include all needed keywords there. Generally speaking search robots love texts J.

When you get to the product page, for example http://www.shopshortyshorts.com/collections/high-waisted-shorts/products/flower-power-high-waisted-denim-shorts-floral-jean-shorts ; again you have to scroll down  and scroll down until you see the filter, price and add to cart button. Move it upwards.

About us page. The latest news link doesn’t work at all. At this point I would recommend to run a blog for your website, it will be good for your store rankings. You topic is great and there are a lot of ideas as to what to write about. Some clues you may get even from the keywords, for example, “ how to wear high waisted shorts”,  “how to style high waisted denim shorts”.  I think you can use video for promotion too  - your niche is good for this.

Lastly, I would mention check out process. It is has around 5 steps which a lot for the user to complete the purchase – think of ways how to simplify this process.

Hope it will help you!

Hello Lora,

Frankly speaking, the website is really great. I wasn't able to find any obvious issues in terms of user experience design. Checkout page, "add to card" button is great. The only thing that I would add is a quick view button on a category overview page.

As for the SEO the scope for improvement is really huge, starting from "title" improvement to fixing the duplicates.

As I can see now the website's positions and therefore traffic and sales from organic is significantly low. You have about 20 keywords in Google.com top 20. I believe your prior market is the US though I have found international shipping options on the checkout page. I have also reviewed the number of backlinks to your website and it seems that at the moment you have only 50 backlinks from the 23 referring domains. For such competitive niche this is a very small amount, Google simply doesn’t consider the website as a valuable and therefore it will not rank it high in the SEPR.

To let Google understand that the site is great and it should be rank high, the best bet will be to start from internal website’s optimization. In that way SE will be able to associate it with the relevant keywords. Speaking further it will be necessary to add the texts on the category pages and fix the duplicated content.

I’ve found some cross domain duplicates on the product page like here http://www.mypleasurebox.com/collections/position-aids-swings/products/fetish-fantasy-series-ultra-inflatable-position-master and here http://www.mypleasurebox.com/collections/position-aids-swings/products/fetish-fantasy-series-inflatable-bed-holds-up-to-550-lbs The fact is that such duplicated content is risky for the project. Google pays great attention to duplicates and the website can be decreased in rankings just because of that. The content should be rewritten, or as a compromise, you can add some user reviews there to make the page more unique than it is now.

After all the mentioned above will be fixed you can move on to the link building. Backlinks are also a great sign for SE that the website is valuable. They are trying to pay more attention to social signals still backlinks are also considered as a vote. There are a lot of methods of acquiring them but please don’t do any black hat methods or outsource this work to a low level SEO agency. All the backlinks should be from thematic websites or forums or blogs.

Hope this should give you a general overview of the possible strategy, and how to move further. If you need the detailed description about any points that I’ve mentioned, feel free to post questions here or contact me directly at contact@promodo.com that is much much better.

Good luck with your project Lora.

  Hello Kayin!

Loved the idea of your website  - cool. Now let’s proceed to recommendations.

The first thing which concerns SEO is website page optimization for keywords. Specifically, titles, headings with H1 tag and texts. I described several times in this thread how to do keyword research and optimize page for the keywords, so please kindly read posts above. If you still have any question you may write me to a.moseva@promodo.com and I will be glad to explain you the details. I will just highlight that this is a very important moment, because Google looks at what is written in titles, texts and headings during ranking process. As to the text I would add more of it to your site pages.

I suppose that your site is new and you are planning to grow its assortment ... I have checked your website in Google index – there are only 35 search results so far. It seems very little; please check that your xml sitemap contains all urls from your website. Also, when you will add new products or categories, make sure to reflect this changes in xml sitemap too.

When I was checking your website links I saw you have pretty much links from forums – this is great, keep it up!  One more tip – you can make the use of Google alert to always know when people are looking for anime t-shirt on web, probably, this way you will also find new forums which will generate quality links for you.

What is really harmful in terms of SEO is duplicate content, for ecommerce stores it is especially common because many products have very small differences and  that is why texts for them are identical. Please make sure that each page has unique content. The same goes for titles and description – they should be repeated. It is to identify such pages with duplicate titles and description in the HTML Improvements under Search Appearance in Google Webmaster Tools.

To please Google you can also add html sitemap to your site – this way you will show to Google that you care about your site visitors and try to offer the best user experience.

As to the website navigation.  I think you may add breadcrumbs to your website. In short breadcrumbs are secondary navigation elements  that show the user’s location in a website, it is very important for optimal user experience as at each and every moment the user should understand where he is in the website and how he can move backwards or proceed further.    http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2009/03/17/breadcrumbs-in-web-design-examples-and-best-practices-2/

Filters. I would also make search on your website more advanced, it is a beneficial feature of ecommerce stores. I would allow search on your site by categories, colour, size, etc. I searched for your website competitors according to the keywords you have with them in common.  Some of them are http://www.redbubble.com, http://www.spreadshirt.com/, http://www.zazzle.com/, http://gesshoku.com/. Check  what kind of filters and search they use, probably, they will hint you for something else as well.

I have looked through your blog, I would work more on it, fill it with interesting and catchy information on regularly basis – when Google looks at your site and evaluates your website relevance to the given search query, thanks to blog as well he will see that your website is full of relevant information and thus your website is good match for the search query user has typed.

As I mentioned before, I love the product you sell and think you will success if incorporate into your strategy promotion on Pinterest and Instagram.

There are definitely more basic SEO and usability things that you could implement on your website quickly and on budget.  Download for free our SEO and usability guides and you will be able to get more actionable tips for your store promotion http://www.promodo.com/pdf-downloads/guides/small-business-seo-guide/  , http://www.lp.promodo.com/guides/usability-checklist/.

Hope it will be helpful, feel free to write me back!

Google sees your current homepage title as "Informal Organic Tea New Zealand. | Welcome". You can check it by entering "site:informaltea.co.nz" command in Google.com.

If you check your homepage via this link here: http://www.majesticseo.com/reports/site-explorer you will get the same result for the homepage – your current title is "Informal Organic Tea New Zealand. | Welcome" with just 43 characters.

Nevertheless we would still recommend you to check the code of your website again because something is still wrong there. We found 2 title meta tags within your code:

<title>Informal Organic Tea New Zealand.: </title>

and

<title> | Informal Organic Tea New Zealand.</title>

But none of them is indexed by Google.

At the same time it is not clear, where Google and MajesticSEO got the title they show now – we looked for the keyword Welcome within your homepage code and didn’t find it.

So we would definitely double check the code for the project.

As for other issues – you do not know for sure from what sources people came to your homepage. So it would be great to let them know on the first screen of the homepage what your project is about.

Are tea cups your main product? Frankly speaking it’s not quite clear from the photo on the homepage (handmade by us screen) that it is a tea cup and that it can be purchased.

Texts from your project are duplicated on some other resources like trademe.co.nz. But it seems to be OK for the moment because Google treats your website as a source for these texts and ranks it TOP 1 for them.

You have a blog with interesting articles – that’s great. We also hope you use it extensively for SEO purposes like checking the most topical questions in the niche, and publishing SEO-optimized articles covering these questions.

We would do additional keyword research and optimize the project further to fill relevant pages with relevant keywords. You have backlinks from 33 unique domains at the moment, so you’d definitely need additional link support. And we would use your blog more extensively for SEO purposes.

Vince,

You’ve already done great job. Everything is quite well categorized. Though if you align  all products on product category pages more accurate, it will further improve look and feel of the pages and make browsing more comfortable.

http://boatingdocksupply.com/collections/dock-fish-cleaning-tables: The text looks a little bit oversaturated with keywords, it contains 96 words and we found at least 8 keywords within this text. Besides you’ve highlighted several keywords within the text. Most probably you did it to add them value from SEO point of view. But these keywords look like links now and confuse users a bit.

At the same time you didn’t use the potential of Title meta tag for SEO to its full capacity. We would add more relevant keywords into this meta tag.

It also seems there are some problems with indexing your project by search engines. Generally we found around 44 pages in Google index, but for example the page http://boatingdocksupply.com/collections/dock-fish-cleaning-tables is missing.

If you add more SEO optimized texts to each product category (but be careful, the text should not be oversaturated with keywords) you will definitely benefit from it and increase chances to be ranked high in SERP for relevant keywords.

It seems there are some technical and SEO issues on the project that prevent you from being well indexed and ranked by search engines. And these issues require deeper investigation. You have a very good project with useful products. It’s a pity if people won’t be able to find you in Google search results because of these issues. So we would strongly recommend you to hire some SEO provider for a deeper one-time SEO audit of your project (not necessarily our company, though we also provide such services). This will be one-time investment with long term positive effect. Your niche doesn’t seem to be highly competitive. So you will benefit even from one-time SEO tweaks.

Shashi,

We would make the layout more compact (decrease gaps between your logo and the menu on the homepage, decrease gaps between breadcrumbs and Mens Aprons title).

“Free Australia wide shipping” and “moneyback guarantee” should be also highlighted on your product category pages (http://blendstyle.com.au/collections/mens-aprons and http://blendstyle.com.au/collections/womens-aprons) and on each separate product page (like http://blendstyle.com.au/collections/womens-aprons/products/tuscany-apron). The reason is that many visitors will land directly to your product category pages and product pages and won’t see your homepage.

We would also recommend you to add Buy button for each product listed on your homepage and on product category pages.

As for SEO issues – you need onsite SEO optimization for relevant keywords. Please check the reply from Elena Ruchko to Tanay Mehta above in this thread on how to do it. Elena’s post contains also some links to tutorials that will give you even more information.

If you have any issues in the future, please feel free to contact me here or at contact@promodo.com.

Hello Rachel!

I have looked through your website  http://www.tangled-yarn.co.uk. ; As to the SEO, my college Elena Ruchko has already given you some great advice on how to optimize your website. I think you really need to do a keywords research and select keywords (around 10 or so) first of all for such pages as main page and page with product categories. The winning way would be to focus on long tail keywords as they not too much competitive and drive quality traffic. You should optimize three key elements: titles, headings with H1 tag and texts. I read you wrote in other thread you are working on optimizing your websites texts right now, so it is a good chance to optimize them for the keywords too.

Now let’s talk about usability side:  Buttons “Register” and “Login”. If the buyer can do everything without signing up it would be good to highlight how the user will benefit it he creates an account.

Knitting Yarn section. I see that you have divided the yarn by the brand and also when I am within this category I can use the filter by material. But what if I as a user want to search for the yarn by brand and material at once? So it would be wise to create the filter allowing to search by two parameters at once.

Also, when I see these product pictures and their name and price below it is not quite obvious that they are links and are clickable. It would be good to make them more obvious so they won’t look as a plain text. ( please see the picture attached). Also, I would add the “Buy” button near this product pictures, that would be good.

The same goes for the elements “Just arrived”, “Sales” they also don’t look as links.

Knitting patterns: in the filter which is in this category there are different categories mixed up,  such as “dress”, “blanket”, “women”, etc. But what if I want to choose “women” and “dress” at the same time? I think it is better to make here filter allowing to search by multiple parameters.

Cross sale. Why don’t you try cross selling on your website? For  example, when user is searching for knitting yarn, you can suggest buying corresponding needles, hooks…

As for the product page, for example, http://www.tangled-yarn.co.uk/collections/knitting-yarn/products/malabrigo-worsted, the ADD TO CART button is too large and it looks as something which separates one block of information from another. It would be good make it look as a button. Also, when the user clicks it the next thing which appears is “Thank you” and “Cart”. I think it confuses the user, it would be better if he sees there something like “continue shopping” or “go to the shopping cart”. All in all, I think you should work on this button.

Checkout: you offer to the user two options: just checkout and checkout with PayPal. Just checkout button is  so prominent that it is not clear that the user has actually two options and he might pay with PayPal. Besides a great feature of your site “Shipping estimate” is placed way low on the page, on small screen devices users might not see this cool feature at all.

That is what you saw right now, but I think there are more elements which could be improved so make sure to check our usability guide it will help you! http://www.promodo.com/pdf-downloads/guides/usability-checklist/

Also, if I find my answer is helpful, you can leave your feedback here http://experts.shopify.com/promodo Thank you!

Hello Mariya!

I have checked your website http://www.softandwarm.eu. So you asked about its SEO optimization. In order for your site to be by search engines it should be first: be fully indexed by Google (by fully I mean that there should be all the pages you want Google to see, not those which are better to hide from Google), secondly, your website pages should contain clues which would tell search engine that your website matches the query the internet user has entered, for example “knitting yarn”. How can you do this? By optimizing titles (mention in them several keywords – words which users very frequently enter in the search engines when are looking for the product like yours) , optimizing texts (those keywords which you mention in title you should mention in the text too, please mind that for each separate page you choose different keywords for promotion), optimizing headings with H1 tag (make sure to mention at least one keyword in the page headings, you won’t be able to put there a lot as the headings look good when they are short J).

All these three points are true for your case. For example, on the main page there is no word which would be related to your products, instead it is written in h2 tag “Welcome to my webshop”, it doensn’t tell Google anything about your website specialization.  As to the text I would also make it larger   - specifically, for main page and pages with product categories such as http://www.softandwarm.eu/collections/amalia-collection-100-wool, http://www.softandwarm.eu/collections/elina-collection-50-wool-50-acryl, etc.

One important note: please monitor that your website pages doesn’t have duplicate text – I noticed that some parts of texts are repeated from page to page (please see the attachment). It is super dangerous for website rankings, if Google notices that text is duplicated on several pages he will consider these pages as duplicates and will decrease their rankings.  By the way, duplicates my appear not only in texts, but in titles and descriptions as well, so please monitor this issue in Google Webmaster Tools under HTML improvements.

Duplicate pages is a great issue and could be of many kinds – it is important to avoid any of them.  For example, on your website, I noticed the following: the same page opens for two different URLS – with / at the end and without it  - this is duplicate, you should avoid it –set the redirect from page with / at the end to corresponding page without it.  Another duplicate page issue on your site is that the same page open with URL consisted on small letters and with URL containing some capital letters, for example, http://www.softandwarm.eu/collections/elina-collection-50-wool-50-acryl/ and http://www.softandwarm.eu/collections/elina-cOllEctiOn-50-wool-50-acryl/  ; - you should set redirect  so that any variants redirect to the URL with small letters. Lastly, if the user types in browser line just softandwarm.eu, it receives the notification that the page could not be found. Set the redirect which would automatically take the user to the http://www.softandwarm.eu/ ; page.

To improve website indexation by the search engine make sure that you have submitted xml sitemap to webmaster tools. Another moment is to regularly update this sitemap when new products are added.

Links to the website is another very important element. You can earn links in different ways, for example, you can write posts about knitting and link to your website, or you can participate in the forums – this is a really great option.

What else does Google like? He likes website which doesn’t have any technical problems, most of the issues could be easily monitored in Google Webmaster Tools.  For instance, track the number of 404 errors, they should not increase, check whether any duplicates have appeared in titles or descriptions, etc.

There is one great guide which I would advise you to read to better handle SEO optimization of your website. Please check it here: http://www.promodo.com/pdf-downloads/guides/small-business-seo-guide/

Hope it was helpful! Good luck with your business!  And if you feel I have helped you with your question, please leave your feedback here http://experts.shopify.com/promodo , thank you.

Donatien,

You sell unique products and actually you sell emotions to your visitors. So as a user I should get inspired by your website and products, so we’d recommend you to make the look and feel of your project more appealing.

I’d also add some text on the homepage describing the uniqueness of the product, maybe providing some interesting facts about how they are manufactured, or maybe you have some other interesting info related to your products.

Besides if I’m looking for a lantern, I’d like to get a closer look to the product itself, check it closer and from various angles to understand how to fit it into my room.

For a wooden lantern I’d like to understand how waterproof it is and if I could use it on my terrace or balcony.

Links to Boutique and À propos should look like links and menu items. Search field is usually highlighted and is designed in a more obvious manner.

Frankly speaking when I first landed on your homepage I didn’t understood that it’s an Ecommerce website selling lamps and lanterns. For me it looked more like a page with several lamp images. So we would recommend you make it more ”traditional”, with separate product menu and main menu with About us, Press, Delivery, Contact us etc. items.

From SEO point of view you need to optimize your project towards relevant keywords. Elena Ruchko has given a good step-by-step recommendation on this in a post to Tanay Mehta above in this thread.

We wish you good luck with your project and hope our recommendations help you!

Hellen,

In terms of usability we found no serious issues J Maybe just your sorting option could be improved. Let’s take as example your http://www.modishliving.co.uk/collections/eat page. Currently you have 1 filter for at least 3 parameters – by product type (bench, chair), by price and by range. Ideally there should be 3 separate filters for that. Otherwise it is not clear how to sort products using multiple parameters at once. Besides some parameters are not clear. For example what does “sleep” mean? You have a product category page with the same name. And if I choose this parameter within “eat” category I get 3 sideboards.

And one minor issue – your product pages contain a link “by Modish Living” and this link seem to lead to a sorting page by vendor. It makes sense if you have several vendors listed on the site and if those brands are known and people look for them. But in this case it would be good to have corresponding menu item “by vendor” or “by brand”. Though this issue is really minor one.

As for SEO you’ve already done a lot of important things like correct 404 page set up, correct redirects. Your texts seem to unique – we found no duplicate content.

Now you need onsite optimization for relevant keywords. First run a keywords research. This infographics here: http://www.promodo.com/blog/keyword-research-process-infographics and the post about keyword selection: http://www.promodo.com/blog/how-to-select-effective-keywords-for-website-promotion will help you. Then select appropriate keywords for your homepage and product category pages. If you find enough traffic for separate products it makes sense to optimize manually each corresponding product page as well. Fill in your Title met tag with relevant keywords and add relevant keywords to current texts on your pages (we would recommend to write larger texts for your homepage and product category pages to contain all relevant keywords and at the same time to look natural – do not oversaturate them with keywords).

We found just 4 backlinks to your project at the moment. So this is another area that you should pay attention to. You need more links from relevant third-party resources.

Please also have a look at our Small Business SEO Guide: http://www.promodo.com/guides/small-business-seo-guide/. I hope you’ll find more useful information there.

Do not hesitate to contact us if you have questions.

Philippe,

We found no usability issues on your project. The only thing that is unclear is with “Ich bin mit den allgemeine Geschäftsbedingungen einverstanden” checkbox. Is it really necessary to get customers read the whole Agreement? Can you simplify it and make it shorter?

And what if I do not know my “Postleitzahl”? Could I still type the name of my city or town and choose it from a drop down list?

We found no Google Analytics on your website. Maybe you use some other system to collect and analyze metrics of your website. In this case we would recommend you to check your visitors’ behavior, most visited pages and pages with highest bounce rate – if you find that many customers leave your website at the checkout stage – you should definitely think about making AGB-accepting process easier.

As for SEO issues – we found duplicate content on the project. For example these 2 pages here: http://www.maitrephilippe.de/products/kollektion-8-dosen-sardines-la-belle-iloise and http://www.maitrephilippe.de/collections/sardines-belle-iloise.

You should also optimize your project towards relevant keywords like “Essen online bestellen” etc. Such keywords should be added to Title meta  tags of corresponding pages and text content. This will help search engines to better associate your project with relevant keywords and improve your rankings.

Feel free to contact us at contact@promodo.com if you need any further advice on your project.

Dear Hanna,

thanks a million for you incredible analysis!!! As I said I am brand new in ecommerce and thanks to your review I realized the I made a big mistake in my site organization! To keep the long story short, I created 1 collection per yarn type and brand and I defined the different colours as products. Big mistake! Like this, I have tons of duplicate text! I will work this night to restructure the site and starting working with products and product variants instead.

What I didn't get is the duplicate pages. For example, "the same page opens for two different URLS – with / at the end and without it  - this is duplicate" I do not know if I can influence the creation of the pages. I expected that Shopify is taking care of it. How should I overcome the issue?

Kind regards,

Mariya

PS I would love to write a review but I cannot figure out how...

Hi Darryn!

Firstly, I would say that some things are already well done on your website, however, there is still lots of room for SEO optimization. Sorry that I begin again with the same thing I advised other people here, but it is really important and crucial for your website rankings –  keyword research and title, headings, texts optimization.  You should find the keywords which would drive quality traffic to your site (for each page you should select separate keywords) and then write new titles using keywords you have found. The same goes for headings with H1 tag and texts. When you optimize the titles, try to put the most important for promotion keywords at the title beginning.

Texts on the pages are very important – each your website page should have text, especially those which you would like to be ranked in the search results.  For example, this page

http://www.ilovehandbags.com.au/collections/all/products/cleo-cuff has almost no text, you should add some.  You main page http://www.ilovehandbags.com.au/ also doesn’t have text which would talk about your shop and opportunity to buy bags in general, the text in which you could use the keywords you will decide on for promotion. Besides your main page and category pages such as http://www.ilovehandbags.com.au/collections/all/Necklace, doesn’t have heading with H1 tags at all.

As to the titles, I would really advise general keywords with which users usually search  for products like yours. Probably, that would be “handbag” or “bag” or something similar – two-word keyword for example. For instance, this page title http://www.ilovehandbags.com.au/collections/all/products/betty-carry-all-red <title>Betty Carry All (Red) by Imperial Hyde | ilovehandbags.com.au</title> doesn’t have anything that it is a bag and it can be bought.

Duplicate content. Very essential issue, cause if the Google find out that two pages of your website has the similar content, it thinks they are fully duplicated and decreases both of them in rankings. Be aware also of the pages which have the same titles and descriptions – each page title and description should be unique, simply monitor this in Google Webmaster Tools and rewrite them when you spot any duplicates.  Be attentive, for example, when you run sales, if you create separate page to offer discount on the bag and at the same time have a normal page with this bag, make sure the texts and titles are different.

What I have found on your website is:

<!--[if !supportLists]-->-          <!--[endif]-->when the bags are sorted by the color http://www.ilovehandbags.com.au/collections/cadelle-1/camel , http://www.ilovehandbags.com.au/collections/cadelle-1/blue the titles, descriptions and headings are the same. Should be unique for each colour. The same goes for other categories   - http://www.ilovehandbags.com.au/collections/all/sling-bags and

http://www.ilovehandbags.com.au/collections/all/marla-fiji , Jewellery…

You already have bread crumbs on your website like these (check the attachment). It is a great opportunity  to create additional links to your website pages with the right anchor. (anchor texts are texts which are appended to the links, they important because Google looks not only on the links quantity to your website, but also on the words these link feature, it tells the search engine what so valuable is about your site that users link to it). At this point internal linking is also important, so if you make those links form breadcrumbs feature some keywords, this will be beneficial).

A little bit about usability. Your contact page provides an email, but it is not clickable, this is not very convenient.  In general, please check that all information which users might think is possible to click on is clickable, it will improve their experience on your website.

Simemaps. To improve website indexation by Google and users experience,  firstly, regularly update xml sitemap  with new links and secondly, create a html sitemap on your website, show a link to it.

Lastly, I have checked you have very few links – you should earn more of them to start being raked well in the search engines.  Possible ways are writing engaging posts, give valuable content, social media promotion and participation in the forums.  You website is Australian, so make sure you get a fair amount of links from .au domains, other possible domains are general domains such as .com, .net,  .org, etc.

To learn more SEO tricks I would recommend you reading our guide http://www.promodo.com/pdf-downloads/guides/small-business-seo-guide/

I hope my advices are helpfulm if you fidn them so, please leave a feedback on our page http://experts.shopify.com/promodo

Thanks!

Hello Mariya!

I am so glad I have helped you! Yes, I have to send you the request to leave the feedback first, I have done it alreay, please check.

As to your question, I mean the same page is opened for two different URL. For example, http://www.softandwarm.eu/collections/amalia-collection-100-wool/ and http://www.softandwarm.eu/collections/amalia-collection-100-wool  - these are teh same pages, but they are different to Google because they have different URL. To avoid this duplicate problem, you should set 301 redirect from version with slash to the version withoout it. Usually, webmasters or programmers could do this. If any questions, feel free to ask!

Red Stick Spice,

Sorry for some delay with reply. We haven’t expected such a big amount of requests so the delay with replies takes around 2-3 days now.

I like your website. But why do you mix teas and tea accessories in the same section (I mean Teas)? If I choose Teas section I expect to see teas collection. Maybe it’s not a big issue from usability point of view, but from SEO point of view it is better to have 2 separate landing pages for teas collection and tea accessories.

When I select Teas in your Shop menu I land on the page http://www.redstickspice.com/pages/teas. It looks cool but seems to be excessive. Links for continuing shopping (like View our complete collection of teas and teaware now) are not very easy to find. You have Google Analytics installed on your website. If you have set up goals and sales funnel tracking you can check how people behave on this page and what is the bounce rate here. Maybe you will find out that this page is really excessive and people just get confused on how to continue shopping.

It would also make sence to narrow down the number of parameters for filtering in some cases. For example Section Teas contains filter parameter “all-natural” and it displays just 1 product and it’s … honey :) The same goes for filter “Louisiana” (though the title of the page is “teas tagged Louisiana”).

Buy Local option I’d highlight at a more noticeable place. Offline locations add credibility.

I found your Bodum Bistro Nouveau Tea Press and I like it, though it is sold out at the moment. Can I get some information whether it will be back with “in stock” status? Can I pre-order it or at least let you know that I will be potentially ready to buy it when it’s available again?

With this product here: http://www.redstickspice.com/collections/teas-2/products/mate-gourd I’d like to see teas that you’d recommend for this Bombilla instead of seeing mugs in the Related Items section.

From SEO point of view we’d recommend you to optimize Title meta tags for corresponding keywords and add SEO-optimized texts to all relevant pages (homepage, product category pages and product pages).

We also found duplicate content issue on the project. It may harm you rankings considerably. For example if you enter this phrase with brackets in Google: "This decaffeinated Green Tea is delicately flavored with apricots. The apricots" you will see that Google finds a lot of pages with this content. And it is strange, because this text is available only on http://www.redstickspice.com/products/apricot-green-tea page. But Google finds this text on all pages where this product is listed within Related Items category like http://www.redstickspice.com/products/earl-grey-creme, http://www.redstickspice.com/collections/teas-2/tea etc. For some reason Google sees not only the image of this product but also text related to this product.

I hope this post helps you :)

Kerim,

We’d recommend you to reorganize product categorization. When I land on your homepage current menu doesn’t help me to understand what product categories I can purchase here. And product categorization heavily depends upon traffic sources. If you drive traffic from PPC or SEO to your project for the keywords like “buy soap online” or “buy tea glass mug” you should have corresponding landing pages for that. If you have just 1 glass mug or soap on your website, you can drive such traffic directly to your product pages. But if you have several products in each category – you’d need corresponding product category pages for each category. if you don't know how to categorize your current product range, you can try to make initial keyword research or competitive analysis to understand how people search for such products and how this categorization is organized on your competitors' websites.

http://www.turquoiseandolive.com/collections/body: it would be more convenient for me as a visitor to have filters like “soap”, “towel”, “bath salt”, “shampoo” etc. These parameters are more important instead of Almond, Deep Sea, Cotton etc.

From SEO point of view there are serious problems with indexing in Google. Via command site:turquoiseandolive.com we can see that Google finds 84 pages of your project. But when we try to enter some parts of the text from your pages like “A unique design that resembles hundreds of micro rice pieces spread around, giving a unique character.” Google doesn’t display your project for them, instead, you will find your Facebook page, turquoise-olive.myshopify.com there. And what is really strange – even indexed pages are https-pages and not http-ones.

Kerim, I highlighted this problem, which is very serious, but in order to help you here there will be required a very deep and thorough investigation of the project which I’m unable to provide you at the moment. We’d really recommend you to involve an SEO provider for a one-time SEO audit of the project.

Hello Heather.

Glad to see you here in our thread.

As I can see the website had been just launched. I wasn’t able to find any backlinks leading to it still there are about 60 pages in Google index that shows that Google knows about it.

To be frank with you, as you offer unique custom products, I don’t think SEO is something that will help you a lot. Competition for keywords like “custom t-shirts” is really great and you’ll spend a fortune competing with large brands.

Of course internal optimization is very important but if I were you I would pay attention to brand promotion instead of organic. What I mean is a different kind of PR activities, like communication on forums, blogs and so on. That will give you referral traffic and will help to establish a brand name that will eventually lead to brand recognition.

You can have a talk with bloggers and ask them to post a review about the product, or you can create a new forum thread to let people know that you offer such amazing custom t-shorts. There are actually a lot of options of how to do it. You have a Facebook page, use it. It’s also a great way to attract traffic because people like different custom stuff.

As for the SEO sure website’s onsite optimization is a must, I don’t mean it is not important I mean the priorities and goals are a bit different if I understood you right. At the moment I would recommend you to optimize pages’ title meta tags for the beginning. Home page and category pages can be optimized for general keywords like “custom t-shirts” etc. and product pages is better to optimize for low volume keywords like “black man t-shirt with a skull” etc. I’m just giving you the general idea here of how to move on further.

What I’d like also to emphasize is that you have great unique content, I have checked several descriptions on product pages and I wasn’t able to find any duplicates. To make it even better you can add some content on category pages like http://paintedrevolver.com/collections/crossfit and http://paintedrevolver.com/collections/military etc.

Speaking about the user experience design it is not obvious from the home page that you are on the ecommerce website. It will be better to make the logo picture smaller and install a slider (banner) instead of it. Here is what I mean: www.customink.com www.zazzle.com. These guys show you the products right from the home page even if you review it using tablet pc or smartphone. I have also noticed that you offer 2XL and 3XL sizes in a separate section “Xtra Options” it will be better to add them to the product page because I’m not sure that a potential buyer will go to the other category to check the availability. Just add them in your ordinary list S/M/L/XL/2XL/3XL and mark them as custom, it will be much much better.

Hope this will help you in your business.

If you need the detailed description about any points that I’ve mentioned, feel free to post questions here or contact me directly at contact@promodo.com that is much better.

Good luck with your project.

Thanks Hanna,

How do I contact you for assistance with our site?

Also regarding Bodum Bistro Nouveau Tea Press, its a new item that will be in stock in the next few days. I created the page prematurely, so the stock shows zero. But it should be available very soon.

Thanks for the review, I look forward to discussing your services.

@ Red Stick Spice,

It really makes sense to add new products in advance so that the pages are indexed by Google by the time the product is available. I just wanted to hint you that I as a visitor and potential customer would like to have this information listed on the product page so that I understand what to do next - leave my Email to be notified once the product is available or give up idea to get this cool tea press. If you add something like "this product will be available in 2 weeks." and the button with something like "Wishlist" or "Pre-order" - this would work perfectly for me.

Please Email us at contact@promodo.com to continue our communication.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Sue,

There’s not much to comment on your project in terms of usability because you already implemented a lot of useful things and did it correctly. Maybe just several minor issues described below…

I would make the banner more informative. Such a banner is a great opportunity to sell separate products, but in this case the slide should lead to that separate page. If you want to advertise a product category, the image should give your visitor clear understanding of that.

Not quite understood why you have filters on http://www.beachcover.com/collections/ladies-beach-cover-ups page. And what is the difference between “Beach-cover Ups” and “Ladies” parameter?

We would also delete “Beachcover” under each product icon (it’s excessive info) and add Buy button 9to add more call-to-action).

Page http://www.beachcover.com/collections/ladies-beach-cover-ups/products/blue-light-embroidered-beach-cover-up: why do you have an image of a girl in a white cover? It doesn’t belong to this product. This product has no indication on the fabric. Besides there is something wrong with the main image of this product – I can’t zoom it.
A broken link found: http://www.beachcover.com/pages/sizing-chart - Page not found :(

Not all products have information on the fabrics. For me as a potential customer this is important.
“Add special instructions for your order…” filed could be placed higher and implemented in a more obvious way so that it is more noticeable.

“Checkout” button should lead to “Pay with a debit or credit card” option and “Checkout with PayPal” should lead to “Pay with my PayPal account” option. Otherwise what is the reason to have 2 separate buttons leading to the same option?

From SEO point of view we would strongly recommend to fix duplicate content issue. Many product pages have identical text (please check the phrase “Our incredibly popular hand-embroidered beach cover-up is a holiday essential - perfect for the beach or poolside.  This” in Google - you will see 8 pages with the same text content.

Generally Google has indexed 143 pages of your project. Please compare it with actual amount of pages. If the actual amount of pages significantly differs from the amount of indexed pages – this will mean that there are some problems in how Google perceives your project.

As for general onsite optimization level - you'd need to add relevant keywords to your title meta tags, add more texts to your product category pages, fill them with relevant keywords and optimize texts on your product pages for relevant keywords.

Good luck with the project and if feel free to ask if something in my post is not clear :)

Hello Sabrina!

I am really sorry for delay, but here what I have found out :-)

Let me start with usability block.

Gallery Page. I love the idea, but I would say that it is not quite clear what is on this page, I would change “Gallery Page” for something else, and probably, better highlighted it, cause in fact it is a source of great users’ engagement – who doesn’t want to post photos of their happy kids? Such concept even could be used in social media.

Twitter button. I checked your social media buttons which are placed on the website, the one which is for Twitter doesn’t seem to work properly. Please check it.

I took a look at your Facebook page also, I think you could diversify the content on this page. For example, add posts from the blog, post some other content. By the way, statistics shows that posts without images are not effective, if you make the post with text and link, make sure to add some eye catching good-looking image.

As to the product menu, I would advise you to remove search by brand and category placed on the main page closer to the bottom of the page. It is better to show all range of choice to the user at once – user will appreciate it, cause they won’t have to complete several additional steps to find what they want, they will see everything at once. There are two possible ways to do this. Firstly, you can make a drop down menu under each category. For example under Baby Girl – animal rompers, baby hats, etc. Or you can place a large detailed menu on the left side of the website.

Ways to contact the team. I have noticed that on some pages email is not  a link it is not clickable, for example on FAQ page. It is a disadvantage from usability point of view.

Those big sliding images on the main page, generally they are supposed to be clickable and lead to the relevant page, however, if I want to do this I am either   not able to click or shown a window requesting a Shopify login…

Useful links directory. I would say that formatting of the links you suggest differs from one to another which creates not very good impression. Also at the bottom of this page I saw something like “Real Estate Link Exchange Directory

Free link exchange and link building service for real estate themed websites.

http://www.linkmarket.net/li...ectory/Business/Real-Estate/&rdquo;

and “<!-- START OF ADDME LINK -->
<a href="http://www.addme.com/submission/free-submission-start.php">Search Engine Submission - AddMe</a>
<!-- END OF ADDME LINK -->”

And here goes the second part, Sabrina )

SEO block.

Website indexation. This URL has been found in Google index http://www.nappykindboutique.co.uk/search, ; this means that Google may index pages from search website, it should not be so, cause such pages create duplicates. To avoid this, write in robots.txt Disallow: /search*.

On page optimization.  One of the first things you should do is to optimize website pages  - titles, h1 headers and texts, improve descriptions. I wrote about this before in this thread, so please kindly check. As for your case, you definitely need to add text to the main page as well as category pages. Those texts which are on the product pages, they are likely to contain identical texts – watch this issue cause it may create duplicates which is harmful for your rankings. Page headings you should not only optimize for keywords you will select but also make them visible. For example,  heading  on the main page “NappyKind Boutique” is hidden, it is obvious from the page code, so please make it visible to the search engines.  I would also recommend to improve some pages descriptions as at the moment some of them are not even finished. As this one “Our carefully sewn products are made with love and designed to protect and comfort busy babies and toddlers knees and legs when crawling and taking thei...” is not finished at all.

Duplicates often occur in page titles and descriptions. Especially it is true for filters, for example on your website pages view-source:http://www.nappykindboutique.co.uk/collections/baby-girl/baby-hats and

view-source:http://www.nappykindboutique.co.uk/collections/baby-girl/bandana-bibs have similar titles, descriptions…

I am not sure whether it was completely your website fault, but there were several times while I were checking your website that website pages loaded too slowly or didn’t load at all. I checked your website speed, this is what Google suggested for your case (please see the attachment).

Blog optimization. Blog is a great source of website SEO optimization. The first thing you should do is to regularly post new articles which are interesting and useful for the users. Secondly, add to each article you post several low search volume long  tail keywords, chances are that your blog will be found by users thanks to these keywords and after reading the blog users will proceed to shopping.  Additionally, if in the text occur words which directly refer to your product you can make them a link to corresponding website pages. For example,  if you see the word  “baby leggings” you can make it a link to the corresponding page.

Well, I think this information might help you, also you can check our guides on website optimization which could be done on yourself http://www.promodo.com/pdf-downloads/guides/small-business-seo-guide/

Manuel,

Please take it as additional space for further improvements, not as criticism :)
I would use the banner on the homepage more efficient. I like photos there, but these photos do not help me understand what your project is about. At the same time you could use this banner to sell your products to people. You could motivate and inspire them with this banner to shop with your website or you could directly offer them some hot deals and top-selling products here. In this case this banner should lead to corresponding internal pages of your project.

The feature of your shop is that your products are handmade and originate from many exotic countries of the world (not China, as it is often the case now). I would highlight this feature on your homepage – for example on the homepage banner. In your current website implementation when I first saw your menu, I thought that Africa, Asia etc. are delivery options and not countries of origin.

Products by category menu is actually the most important menu and it should be highlighted, because for many visitors this parameter is more important rather than country of origin.
One more recommendation for menu – it is always better to have just 1 parameter for each menu level. For example the page http://www.globalimportsvillage.com/collections/products has a menu on the left of the page with a mix of several parameters at once: countries, product categories and product subcategories. It confuses visitors.

Besides we would strongly recommend you to check your current website structure – how complete and efficient it is. For this you should conduct a keywords research (please see this infographics http://www.promodo.com/blog/keyword-research-process-infographics and this post about keyword selection http://www.promodo.com/blog/how-to-select-effective-keywords-for-website-promotion). Keyword research will help you to determine all relevant keywords that can drive relevant visitors in the future. All keywords should be assigned to corresponding pages of the project. If you discover that for some keywords there are no relevant pages to stick these keywords to, you should think about restructuring the website. The main rule here – we adjust website structure to visitors’ needs and queries.

Keyword research will also help you to optimize your project for SEO. For example you have exotic musical instruments on your site but this keyword is not present in your title meta tag and there is no such keyword in the text content of the corresponding page. It means that Google is not able to associate your project with this keywords and your project will not be displayed to visitors who look for such instruments.

After you have keyword research complete, we would recommend you to optimize title meta tag for relevant keywords and add relevant SEO-optimized texts to your homepage, product category pages, product subcategory pages and product pages.

Hello John!

How are you?

Below is what I have found on your website http://proleagueauthentics.com.

Let me firstly, say that your website also needs title, description, heading and content optimization –similar to those which I recommended other guys earlier in this thread. But your situation is particalular cause there is some optimization techniques done on your website, however, not all of them are implemented correctly.

Main page, page with product categories as well as all other titles should contain unique titles which relate to the page content and contain several keywords for which you would like this particular page to be ranked. For instance, you home page title is too large:  “Pro League Authentics &#124; Pro League Authentics is an independent sports retailer specializing in authentic MLB, NHL, NFL, NBA and soccer jerseys as well as custom lettering. Founded in October 2011, we carry high quality sports apparel of all types - vintage hats, Wilt Chamberlain gear from Overbrook High, original Philly sports t-shirts, even fashionable women's gear. We ship to anywhere in America or Canada”  - ideally it should be no longer than 70 characters. Here is the tool with the help of which  you can check the look of the title and description when create new ones http://seo-website-designer.com/Google-SERP-Emulator.

Page title and description should differ. In your case, on home page, for example, meta  description content is identical to title. It should be different. Title you write for search engines first of all, because they read it when evaluating your website page rankings, that is why it is important to include keywords there.  As opposite to title, description doesn’t take part in the ranking process, however it is very critical for gaining more clicks on your website and optimal user experience. It is good when description is seen in full in the search results. Again, you can check it with the help of this tool http://seo-website-designer.com/Google-SERP-Emulator. General rules for writing effective description is to make it informative, encouraging user to click through to your site, it is good if it contains call to action.

General rule for headings optimization is to apply H1 tag and make sure they contain one or two keywords, similar to those which you write in page title and text. Currently on your website what needs to be written in H1 tag is written in H2 tag and H1 tag in turn is taken by the link at the top of the page Pro League Authentics. This is what should be done. Step 1. Currently  H1 tag on your website is taken by the link with the text Pro League Authentics. These phrase you shouldn’t take into H1 tag, instead make it just a link with the text of the size you need.  Step 2,  your website headings are currently written in H2 tag. So SEO, it is better to put them all in H1 tag, which will be free if you do Step 1. For better SEO effect make sure to include one or two keywords in your headings and of course make them unique for each page as well as titles and descriptions.

Text.  As to the main page text I would say that it is not enough for the amount of links this page currently has.  Internal linking is good, but you should also not overuse it. Currently there are quite a lot of links with the anchor texts containing absolutely commercial keywords such as “vintage hat”. “custom lettering”. etc. This is dangerous due to the Google’s strict policy as to the keyword rich anchor texts (you can read more about this here http://searchenginewatch.com/article/2172839/Google-Penguin-Update-Impact-of-Anchor-Text-Diversity-Link-Relevancy ).  To keep you on the safe side I would advise you to stick to the following guidelines: http://www.promodo.com/blog/how-to-build-penguin-friendly-links. To make this page text still effective in terms of SEO you may just simply include there several keywords for which you would like to be ranked in the search engines. The same recommendation could be applied to other pages of your website, for example, category pages.

Link profile. I have checked your link profile and should say that it is quite dangerous.  First of all, because of sharp increase in its quantity.  On August 24th, your website had almost no links, but 10th of September there number has grown to 20 000 (please see the attachment). The primary source of majority of these links is http://philliesnation.com , it seems it has sidewide links leading to your website with different commercial anchors texts. So why it is dangerous: firstly, this sharp increase, to Google it is very suspicious that all of sudden you got so many links, you should stick to the smooth growth in links number, keep it natural. Secondly, now it turns out that you have over 20 000 external links which are going from 16 domains only. Again, it is very suspicious for Google, diversity is the key in this situation. Lastly, texts which your external  links feature is also not safe. In the first places by the share in the overall  popularity are “phillies vintage hats” , “phillies snapback hats”, etc. To Google its looks like you are trying too hard to be ranked for these words in the search engines. Ideally, at least half of anchor texts should be something connected with your brand name, and the rest commercial keywords but also not too much obviously commercial, with some general words inserted.

I also have checked your robots.txt file. I would recommend to add the following entry there
Disallow: /search* - it will close pages which occur when the user uses your internal website search from Google indexation.

You website is quite large, so I would advise you to add html sitemap and place a link to it on the website. This will work for better user experience and improve site indexation.

Pertaining to the usability side, I have also noticed these things like discrepancy between Checkout and Checkout with PayPal buttons, which looks like the just Checkout is more prior method of payment. Another thing I have noticed also is that on http://proleagueauthentics.com/collections/usfl  page the heading “United States Football League” is written twice.  Also, on    http://proleagueauthentics.com/pages/custom-lettering page I would expect all these pictures of your works to be clickable and enlargeable.

Hope my recommendations will be helpful and feel free to write here should you have any questions. Make sure to check out guides I think you may find them useful as well!  http://www.promodo.com/pdf-downloads/guides/usability-checklist/, http://www.promodo.com/pdf-downloads/guides/small-business-seo-guide/

Brown Eyed Rose,

In terms of usability everything looks nice and clear. During quick analysis we found no serious issues in terms of usability. It’s quite hard to give advice without seeing your visitors’ behavior in Google Analytics. But we would recommend to hide Home category since this menu item seems redundant (Most users got used to click on the banner with your logo in the upper left corner to go to the homepage).

It’s not quite clear why you have Browse category. It confuses a bit. Most probably because you have some products that do not fit into jewelry (like Music Note Confetti Paper Punches etc.) But this category of products could be still grouped into one separate category. If your priority product category is Jewelry – we would recommend to move it to the right so that it is the first menu item. Second menu item could be all other staff that doesn’t fit into Jewelry.

We would also let visitors know about your shipping rates on each product page (for example via a link with a pop-up page).

Though these all are generally minor issues. Maybe there are still some issues there, but there will be required additional investigation and analysis of your visitors behavior in Google Analytics for that.

As for SEO, the website needs onsite optimization. Title meta tags should be optimized for corresponding relevant keywords. The pages with product categories lack optimized texts – as a result the project may not have enough authority from Google point of view to be ranked high for relevant keywords. Please check our reply to Tanay Mehta above on how to do it.

We would also recommend you to make redirects from browneyedrose.com to www.browneyedrose.com.

We found 263 pages of the project indexed by Google. If you check it with actual amount of pages on the project you will understand if there are any issues with Google indexing or not. In other words if the actual amount of pages considerably differs from the amount of indexed pages, it means that there are problems in how Google perceives your project.

Another important issue for SEO is the lack of backlinks. You need to build more links to improve your rankings.

You’ve already done a lot in terms of usability and done it right. We are sure that you will also manage to optimize your project and get relevant traffic and sales.
Good luck with your project!

Amy,

We would make banner slides more informative. Some of the banner slides  with dogs and rabbits confuse a bit because it’s just not clear where these pages lead. Besides you can use some slides to promote any hot deals and offers right on your homepage.

http://www.barksandbunnies.co.uk/pages/our-recipes: when we saw this menu item we really expected to see some recipes for dog biscuits. The text we found on this page is actually good and gives understanding on how the whole process is organized, what are your products made of etc. So a more suitable name for this menu item would be something like “how we do it” or “quality assurance” or something similar that clearer describes the content of this page.

A very important thing is to add full list of ingredients to every product page. Here’s an example: http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=15225456&lmdn=Product+Type&f=PAD%2FpsNotAvailInUS%2FNo. Otherwise it’s not clear if your biscuits contain wheat, rye etc. – what if my dog has an intolerance to some of the ingredients? It’s good that you have your secret ingredient, but I would not give my dog something that I don’t know what it is :)

Approximate Cookies per Package, approximate Size and directions is also important information for me as a potential customer. Please have a look at how Petsmart.com did it.

You wrote about Albie and Kizzie who love your biscuits. Why not make your “about us” page more personal and post photos of your pets and indicate what products they like most from your whole range (this is an opportunity to drive highlight products that have high priority for sales)? Or introduce your dogs on the site and then put some mark something like “Albie recommends” to priority products? People love their pets and some personal approach (especially if the species of their pets are the same with Albie and Kizzie) could raise your sales here if you do the website more personalized.

Depending upon ingredients of your biscuits you may find reasonable to split your whole product range by dog species. Or at least give some hints on your product page like “highly recommended for terriers, boxers and Bolognese”. Even if your biscuits are universal – this may additionally stimulate owners of these concrete species.
It’s really useful that you have a separate page for Feeding & Storage Guidelines. But it would be also useful to have a corresponding link to this page on each product page. The point is that visitors who landed on your homepage and start browsing Bakery menu may notice this sub-item. But those visitors who landed directly to your product page do not know that such a useful page exists.

You’ve done good work with pages interlinking, though we’d recommend changing color of anchor texts of those links to make it more obvious that they are links.

In terms of SEO you need onsite SEO optimization. Please check our reply to Tanay Mehta above for more details on how to do it.

Hope it helps you a bit. If you feel you need further assistance with your project – do not hesitate to contact us here or directly at contact@promodo.com.

Jason,

From usability point of view we’d make the banner more informative and clickable. It can promote your product, for example, highlight competitive advantages or interesting facts about the product itself.

It seems that this is your corporate website with ecommerce module. It would be good then to post more information about the company itself right on the homepage.

What if I need some custom still? Can you do it for me?

From SEO point of view we’d recommend to optimize Title meta tags for corresponding keywords and add SEO-optimized text to your homepage and catalog page. If you don't know how to do it - you can read our reply to Tanay Mehta above in this thread or order one-time consulting with some SEO agency.

You have a blog on your project and it is a great opportunity to get relevant traffic to your website. We would recommend to make posts on topics like “how to brew whisky at home”, “how to choose a still for alcohol brewing”, etc. These posts should be also optimized for relevant keywords and interlinked with each other to give additional authority to corresponding pages for Google. Such a strategy will help you attract relevant visitors in this niche and some of them will surely purchase your product. The algorithm is as follows: when you have a topic to write about, you do keyword research for this topic, select several relevant keywords that have good search volume, write an article with these relevant keywords, internlink this article with other 1-2 related posts from your blog.

We hope these tips will help you increase your sales.

Thank you so much Hanna for your advice, especially for the blog. I'll change the main banner so that it shows the main picture, then some advantages about my company, then maybe it will say contain some sort of action phrase like order before (today) for 5% off or something to spur action.

Thank you so much!

Hi Hanna,

Spent some time last night implementing the changes you have mentioned above and also looking at the SEO post you refer to

In relation to how a search engine sees and indexes your page could you advise how the following are used based on the following Shopify  titles:

'Page Title'

'Page Description'

Sadly the shopify explanation of the above two doesnt seem to be obvious and whether keywords should be in both areas etc? and what parts of the above two items get displayed by a search engine.

Thanks again, your feedback has proved very useful

Tammy,

As a user I’d like to understand what happens, when I click on several banner slides. They have no message and it’s not clear from the picture why should I click on them and where I will land.

We would also make the banner itself smaller and move bestselling products higher on the homepage. If your main priority is sales, your bestselling products should be listed higher than your Facebook, Twitter and Aria’s shoptalk blocks.

In terms of SEO you have around 1500 pages indexed by Google, but there is duplicate content on your project. For example if you enter “SuperTrash is a true it-girl label for independent women with great sense for fashion and style.  The brand stands for living”in Google there will be around 28k websites with the same texts. And the sadest thing is that you are far from TOP 10 for this text. Most probably you’ve taken these product descriptions from some other resources and did it too late, so the chances are not high that you’ll be able to rank high with those texts. Sorry, but most probably the only way to solve this problem would be to rewrite duplicate texts on product categories.

You’d also need onsite optimization – filling your title meta tags with relevant keywords and optimization of texts on your pages. My colleague Elena Ruchko has given a more detailed instruction on this in her post to Tanay Mehta in this thread above.

I hope it helps.

Good luck with your project!

hi Amy,

Generally Title page is important for SEO and it should contain relevant keywords to positively affect your rankings. Besides it is important for conversions, because people will see at least some part of your title in search results.

Description is not so important for SEO, but it is important from conversion rate optimization.

The first challenge is to get ranked high for relevant keywords. But the second step is to get maximum clicks from organic search. The more appealing your description and title will be - the more clicks you get.

This is the site where you will be able to check how your titles and description will look in the search results http://seo-website-designer.com/Google-SERP-Emulator

Have I answered your question?

Maria,

We would make logo and banner on the homepage smaller and move “Free shipping, VIP discount etc.” block move high (it is now at the bottom of your page, and this block is very important because it highlights your competitive advantage).

Youк banner could also be more informative. You can sell priority and bestselling products here, advertise concrete product categories etc.

Your website structure can be even more efficient if you optimize it further. It’s hard to tell you exact structure at the moment because there will be required deeper keyword research and analysis of your current product range, but we would at least add “beach bags” “beach accessories” as separate categories. Why do you have 2 separate categories “beach accessory” and “beach accessories”?

Our recommendation would be to make deep keyword research and regroup your products into several categories so that you have appropriate landing pages for SEO and the whole structure is more user-friendly.

It seems you already done some onsite optimization, but if you change your website structure, you will be able to optimize your pages more efficient for relevant keywords.

Besides Title meta tags should be unique for each page. At the moment you have identical Titles on many pages, like for example “Buy Beachwear Online | Designer Kaftans and Beach Dress | Shop for Beach Clothes - Hugo & Oli Beachwear” title is found at least on http://hugoandoli.com.au/collections/beachwear, http://hugoandoli.com.au/collections/beachwear/beach-dress and even on a Beach Bags page (http://hugoandoli.com.au/collections/beachwear/beach-bag)

We would also recommend you to add SEO-optimized texts to each product category page. This will help you improve your rankings.

I hope these comments help your project improve rankings and get more sales.

Good luck with your project!

Hello Sherry,

Thank you for the post.

It seems that you are already ranked for 14 keywords in google.com top 20 and you have about 445 pages in google index. And at a glance there is a huge scope to move forward.

I have looked through the main category pages and some product pages, and it seems that all the “title” meta tags are almost the same. So optimizing them according to what can be found on the page will be perfect to start with.  Let’s say category pages can be optimized for some general keywords and product pages for low volume keywords.

The second great thing to improve is the amount of content on the page. You don’t have any content on the category pages like here http://www.essellesf.com/collections/dinnerware and http://www.essellesf.com/collections/serveware. This is a common issue on many websites and the thing is that the more optimized pages you have the more traffic you’ll attract and the more chances you have to rank high.

As for the product pages, there are some description of the products and that is great, what I’d add is the customer reviews there. It seems that there is a specific module for that in Shopify. In that way it will be possible to generate a 100% unique and super relevant content.

As for the UX design the first thing that I’ve noticed is the logo on top left corner. I suggest minimizing it and in that way showing more products on the page. I mean if it be removed or shifted somewhere more relevant content will fit on the screen. It is especially noticeable on the category pages when you have some info hidden below the lower line of the screen.

Hope that will help you to move forward with your business.

Good luck Sherry.

P.S. I forget to mention the number of backlinks; it is very low to compete successfully. Think about telling about your website on various forums, blogs and so on. It is also a great way to create a Facebook page and post all the news there.

LIndsey,

we tried to access your website to have a look at it but failed for some reasons. Please check whether the link provided by you is correct or whether the website is up and running.

http://sampergear.com/, sampergear.com results in "Firefox could not find sampergear.com server". Besides when we try to check whether the project is indexed by Google with the command "site:sampergear.com" Google also doesn't give any pages.

Cort,

We’d recommend you to make the logo a bit smaller and add some short description on what the website is about (at least “Rare Air Electronic Cigarettes” or something like that. It would be also great to highlight your competitive advantages (free shipping and moneyback) higher on your homepage so that they are visible on the first screen (a the moment they are almost at the bottom of the page and we had to scroll down to find them).

Or alternatively you could make the banner on your homepage smaller so that the text is displayed higher.

We would also make the banner slides themselves more informative (for example E Juice with coffee cup and coffee beans looks great, but it doesn’t give me understanding what you advertise there. The same goes for other slides. Unless I’m an experienced smoker and I know Rare Air brand it is hard for me to understand at once, that this is a kit with electronic cigarettes).

As for product pages we would recommend to display corresponding accessories in some cases and not similar items. For example for http://rareaircigs.ca/products/rare-air-starter-kit you can upsell Lanyard with clip and Zip up carrying case.

From SEO point of view we would recommend you to make deep keyword research in order to determine all relevant groups of keywords and then adjust your current filters (tags) on http://rareaircigs.ca/collections/rare-air-hardware page to cover all segments of your audience (based on relevant groups of keywords). Besides we would recommend to additionally optimize your product pages with relevant keywords. Please check our reply to Tanay Mehta above for more details on how to do it.

I hope it helps :)

Lindsey,

We would make your homepage more compact so that your visitors have to scroll less.

You could upsell accessories on each bicycle page instead of similar items section with other bikes.

Your bikes look cool, but if I decide to purchase a balance bike for my child, I’d like to get some technical characteristics. Please have a look at one of your competitors: http://www.balancebikeshop.com/product_p/erlite.htm. They indicate weight, dimensions, appropriate child’s age, tire size, seat height settings etc. These parameters are highly important for most parents.

We would also make “add to cart” button more visible.

At first step of the checkout procedure I discover that there is also a tax applied so that the total amount is higher. Some visitors will definitely get disappointed by this fact and leave the website at this step. A\B testing option in Google Analytics could help you understand whether this is an issue for your project. You could check sales volume for those people who discover this tax on your checkout page and for those ones who will see it as a separate line on your product page.

From SEO point of view you already done some onsite optimization. Now you’d need more backlinks to your project.  You currently have around 260 backlinks but they all are from 4 unique domains only. For Google the number of unique domains is more important factor.

We’d also recommend you to manage a blog on your project related to balance bikes. It will help you gather traffic for relevant keywords in your niche if you optimize each post for appropriate groups of keywords and make interlinking correct.

Good luck with your project!

Taliesin,

From usability point of view we found no serious issues.

It’s just not quite clear why you need 2 drop-down fields on each product category page. The first field containing other product categories confuses a bit - your top menu serves perfect for these purposes. Why not leaving just one field with additional parameters to browse within chosen product category?

And we’d also recommend restructuring product category pages so that the products themselves are visible right at the top of the page, because now you have a lot of text and we had to scroll it down to get to the products themselves.

We would also highlight “Free shipping option” on all product category pages and on each product page. It’s good competitive advantage and people should get this information easier.

But these all are minor issues.

From SEO point of view your project is already optimized for some part of relevant keywords. But it can be additionally improved to get more benefit from it. You could add keywords like “handmade baby blanket(s)”, “custom baby blanket”. Your top competitors could give you more insights here – please check their websites for that (titles and texts). Google AdWords Keywordplanner could also give you additional keywords in your niche.
In terms of offsite optimization we found around 450 backlinks from 17 domains. The amount of unique domains with backlinks is much more important for Google when ranking your website rather than the number of backlinks themselves.

I hope it helps :)

JerseyGirl13,

We’d recommend reorganizing the menu. Ideally it should be in just 1 line. The text from your Welcome page could be moved to your homepage. All collections could be joined in just 1 menu item with several drop-down sub-items, etc. This will help your visitors find the information easier.

Your banner slides lead to your admin panel in Shopify. Please change it.

From SEO point of view it is very important to adjust your website structure to cover all segments of potential customers. If you do keyword research for your business niche you will find groups of relevant keywords used by your potential customers. Ideally to cover all these segments you should have separate pages for each such keyword group, and this page should be optimized for relevant keywords.

We’d recommend you to hire an SEO provider for one-time SEO consulting to ensure the compliance of your project with all search engines' requirements. This will be one-time investment with a long term positive result.

Good luck with your project!

Hello Vitor,

Frankly speaking the website is awesome, I really like the design and the products. Just a few issues that I have found.

Some of your content has a lot of duplicates across the web. I have checked several products and it seems that blackberry case and iPad case has a lot of cross domain duplicates. This is something that should be considered and fixed because eventually it can cause the Google penalty.

Your “title” meta tag can be improved with some long tail keywords like” buy cork wallet” etc. they usually have better conversion rate.

After any item is added to the basket customer is automatically redirected to the cart page. I don’t really think that it is correct especially taking into consideration that the “continue shopping” icon is just a link. It will be much better just to show notification that the item was added to the cart or change the link on the cart page to a noticeable icon.

But I think your major concern is traffic to the website and sales. I have checked the number of backlinks and it seems that there are only about 100 backlinks at the moment. As you offer great unique products I’d recommend you to start classic marketing and post different info about the store on various forums and blogs. That will really help you to attract traffic and customers.

Hope this will help you.

Good luck.

Hello Natalie!

I am really sorry for my late reply, but please see what I have found about your website http://www.lunamaternity.com.

I will start with SEO block. Your primary task in terms of SEO is to optimize website pages titles, descriptions and heading in H1 tag for keywords, which you should select in order for your store to perform better in the search engines.

For example, your home page title almost doesn’t contain commercial keywords which would prompt Google that your website is about maternity clothes, title size is up to 70 characters – you can include more keywords, what is written in titles is very important for page rankings in Google. The same home page description is very similar to title, I would make it different and more compelling. As to the heading with H1 tag of this home page it contains “Featured Products” only. It is very unefficient, you should write one or two commercial keywords, some from those which will be featured in your new optimized titles, for example.

To complete on-page SEO optimization you should also ad text to your home page. It should be somewhere around two chapters at least and have several keywords for which you have decided you want this page to be ranked.

Everything that I wrote here about home page optimization is true for all other pages – category pages first of all, and then product pages. I can’t have access to your Webmaster Tools, but quite probably, that many of your product and sort pages have similar titles and descriptions, it is very dangerous in terms of SEO,  so you need to make them all unique.

By the way, talking about duplicates,  on your website the same page could be opened with different URLs, it is risky, as should both such pages get to the Google index, Google consider these pages as duplicates and will decrease their rankings. Namely, home page opens for the address http://www.lunamaternity.com and for http://www.lunamaternity.com/index.php ;ideally it should redirect from index.php version to the standard one http://www.lunamaternity.com.  ; Also your website pages could be opened for the URLs with and without slash at the end, for example, http://www.lunamaternity.com/collections/new-arrivals and

http://www.lunamaternity.com/collections/new-arrivals/. I recommend to redirect this version with slash to the standard page URL,  http://www.lunamaternity.com/collections/new-arrivals in this case.

Another issue your website has  is small and capital letters. At present if the user mistakenly types capital letters in URL, the website returns the 404 error, while according to the best SEO practices it should simply redirect user to the corresponding page but with all small letters in URL.

I have checked your website indexation by Google, there certain pages which shouldn’t be in Google index, for example this one http://www.lunamaternity.com/search?page=7&q=Maternity&type=product ;again because of potential risk to create duplicates. To avoid this problem, I recommend to close the search directory from Google crawler in robots.txt file.

One more important SEO note is about duplicated texts. Text duplicates are as dangerous as URL duplicates, for example. I have found this problem on your website, especially often it occurs on product pages, where stores place the text taken from other websites (for example, product manufactures, or repeat the same text from page to page, because products are very similar). Please check your website for this issue, because for example, one product description has been repeated 36 times according to information in Google index (please check the attachement). It is very unfavorable situation.

This is what I wanted to say about SEO, my next post to you will be about usability part ;-)

Regards, Hanna

Naeshia,

We’d recommend making the homepage more compact so that people scroll less. The logo and the banner could be reduced; the gaps between the logo, the menu and the banner could be also reduced.

We would also revise all filter items and leave only those ones that are really relevant. For example your Necklaces product category page has “earrings” item within Browse drop-down menu. It’s not a big issue but it is still better to leave only those items that are relevant in order not to overload this sub-menu and not to confuse users.

It’s good idea to add additional parameters like “colour” within some categories, but it should be more complete. For example Handbags product category page has “pink” item within Browse drop-down menu but no black, etc.
These are quite minor issues but they will additionally improve user experience of the project and let your visitors make their choice easier.

From SEO point of view please see these recommendation that were posted by my colleague Elena Ruchko:
Your primary task in terms of SEO is to optimize website pages titles, descriptions and heading in H1 tag for keywords, which you should select in order for your store to perform better in the search engines.
For example, your home page title almost doesn’t contain commercial keywords which would prompt Google that your website is about jewelry, title size is up to 70 characters – you can include more keywords, what is written in titles is very important for page rankings in Google. You should also write one or two commercial keywords in H1 tag on your homepage.
To complete on-page SEO optimization you should also add text to your home page. It should be somewhere around two chapters at least and have several keywords for which you have decided you want this page to be ranked.
Everything that I wrote here about home page optimization is true for all other pages – category pages first of all, and then product pages. Please note that all titles and descriptions should be uqniue, so you cannot use one and the same title or description for several pages of the project.
Naeshia,

Please also check the post from Elena Ruchko to Tanay Mehta above in this thread. You will find recommendations on how to do a keyword research for your project.
I hope all this information will help your project start bringing money :)

Hello Natalie once again!

So as to the usability, I would advise you to work on those large pictures which your home page features.  Firstly the white space around them especially below them, looks like empty, it should filled with something or removed at all. Secondly, I would use those images with benefit. For example, you could write on them information about sales, special offers, etc.  – you have this kind of information on your website, there is special category for it, but it would be better to make it more prominent.  Additionally, when I tried click on these pictures nothing happened – ideally they should lead somewhere.

I would also improve the top bar with categories. The thing is that as a rule it should be one line. Everything else should be placed in the drop down menu.

If I view product picture, for example, this one http://www.lunamaternity.com/products/seraphine-maternity-navy-lace-cocktail-dress-honor, the letters at the bottom overlap, which looks not very good.  I would also place sizing info right on the product page, I think it would be more convenient for the users. Also on those product pages there is still a lot of empty, space, I would use it with benefit offering similar products or something which users usually buy when order this particular product.

I have noticed you offer free shipping, then why not make this information more prominent as well? Place somewhere at the top of the page? By the way, I have added to the cart item priced over $300 and got no free shipping, while you say that everything over  $100 is shipped free of charge.

Quality pages in social media are also important. I have noticed that the last post on your Facebook page was a month ago, it is a negative sign cause users may doubt whether the shop is still open or perhaps it has been closed down and that is why there has been no posts recently.

Regards, Hanna

Hello Jamie!
I examined your online store handcraftedceramics.com .  My first advice concerns your website optimization for the search engines. You should fill your website pages with enough content so that Google could judge from this content that your website is relevant to the users’ searches connected with Handcrafted Ceramics. How will Google know that your website is worth to be ranked in the search results for Handcrafted Ceramics related keywords? Your page titles, texts and headings with H1 tag will contain such keywords - that is how search engine will know it and that is what you should with your website pages  - home page, category pages such as http://handcraftedceramics.com/collections/dragons-wizards and product pages.

For example, at present your home page has very little of text, moreover, this text is from welcome page, which means it is repeated on both pages which creates duplicates. Probably, you have read already my posts where I wrote that duplicates are very harmful for page rankings. At to the title of home page, it is very short, just Handcrafted Ceramics, when it is lots of space and opportunities to find similar keywords with good search volume and incorporate them in this title too. Title length could be up to 70 characters – use it for your business benefit. H1 tag on your home page is used not quite correctly. You put the phrase “Handcrafted Ceramics” in this tag and make it a link to the home page. Ideally, it (Handcrafted Ceramics) should be just a link and in H1 tag you should put something which describes the content of the particular page. For example, for the page http://handcraftedceramics.com/products/2-halloween-pumpkins-boxes-trinkets ; in H1 tag you should put “2 Halloween Pumpkins Trinket Boxes”. Description of the home page is similar to a couple of other pages description, which is negative sign for Google and should be corrected for sure. All descriptions and titles should be unique. It is very important.
You website has already xml sitemap, but I would also advise to create html sitemap for your website and place a link to it somewhere on the homepage so the users could easily find the way if they are lost and search engines could crawl your website without any problems.
I have checked your social media buttons and found out that all of them lead to some Shopify accounts, but not yours. This moment creates very negative user experience, so you should fix this problem.
On one of your pages I found this note “I made a mistake/would like to add on to my order. Please call us right away at 931-267-1241.too deep make it more visible”   - it is really good option, but it could hardly found by the users in case they need. Place this telephone number somewhere at the top of the page, or on the contact us page, or somewhere on the product pages, so the users could easily find it.
On the home page you say that the assortment is continuously updated, I thought why not create email subscription then? You could send email to your audience and this way keeping a closer contact with them.
When I wandered through your websites I noticed that a little clutter creates that fact that your product pictures are of different size, perhaps, you should make them of the same size. Also, when I can’t enlarge product pictures, for example, this one http://handcraftedceramics.com/collections/bisque-ready-to-paint-pottery/products/4-1-2-sitting-kitten, ideally users should be able to do that.
If any questions, please feel free to ask, and if you wish to leave a feedback on my work, please let me know, and I will send you a request, so you could do this.

Kind regards, Hanna

Shomari,

Why don’t you use the potential of your homepage? Maybe it’s just a temporary bug but at the moment you have a menu on the left and the rest of the page is blank with just a background image. You can use this space to promote your hot deals and priority items. Besides you should let your visitors know what your website is about at this page.

For us, as your potential customers, it would be important to get additional info on each item like the fabrics of this cloth, a size chart etc. Try to think as your own customer – what additional information you pay attention to when you buy clothes for yourself.

From SEO point of view here’s a sample of an optimized page: http://www.indobase.com/fashion/men-fashion/apparels/western/informal-wear/. There is still space for additional optimization here, but please do at least some basic things like adding relevant keywords to your meta tags (like Casual Menwear Clothing - Casual Clothes For Men - Men Informal Wear) and add some text optimized for relevant keywords (they are in bold within the text on this sample page). This will help Google to associate your project with these keywords.

It would be also useful to manage a blog within your website. If you post SEO-optimized relevant posts there (like How to dress for the week-end, etc.) it will help you gather additional traffic from search engines.

We hope our feedback helps you to get potential customers and get sales :)

Hi Michael (bunionsleeve.com),

I will start from usability standpoint.
When I enter the site the first thing that jumps into my eyes is the phrase "Not available in stores" which is very confusing, as my first thought is  - "probably this site is out of stock currently", and of course then, if I were a customer I would logically think that if the store is out of stock, probably I should leave this site? So, this phrase is just kind of confusing, when it is the first thing that you see.
The next thing is - I cannot see where I can view the products. I see the order now button and navigation bar with size guide, interesting facts and waht not, but I do not see the products or a catalogue.

So, what I would do on the homepage from usability standpoint - I would definitely rethink that banner, I think it should show a photo of your product and you might also leave that picture that you have now. Also there is too much text on the banner, nobody would read into that, it is too long for a moto or a call to action. I would leave only the key points there:

* can be comfortanly worn with socks and shoes
* not available in other stores
* perfect for active people: runners and walkers

"Order now" button is good (you might even make it a bit bigger above the fold), but red "order now" letters in the navigation bar are not good, as they duplicate your call to action (which was on the button) and also navigation bar is not the right place for call to actions. I would strongly suggest you to replace red "order now" with something like "Products" or "Shop for Bunion Sleeves" or something similar. Also I would move this "Products" label closer to the "Home" label and "My Stoury" and "Bunion facts" closer to blog. That will attarct more attention to "Product" label; and the right side of the navigation bar would be all about facts and useful info.

Also that badge that you've hidden at the bottom of your site with 100% satisfaction guarantee and the text saying that you will do a full refund in case of dissatisfaction should totally be displayed above the fold probably right above the email to the left of the logo. Also address and a telephone would do you good. For more insights on usability, please feel free to check this checklist created by experienced UX specialists of Promodo company http://bit.ly/1eC9dYj

From SEO standpoint, to be honest, I would not expect loads of traffic from search, as your target keywords do not have very high search volumes. But if you optimize your site well, I suppose, that you can count on steady 50 to 100 visitors a day and if you actively develop and regularly post to your blog, certainly, more.
What you need to do is select a set of keywords for each page on your site, I would start from combinations like "bunion treatment" "non surgical bunion treatment" and narrow down to "bunion sleeve" "toe sleeve" and others. Then you will have to rewrite you page titles, h1 tags and review your pages content to make sure that you are using the keywords that you have selected for each page on your site pages in all those three most important sections - titles, headings, content. Please check this infographic to get some basic idea of how to approach keyword research correctly http://selnd.com/PBmqC7

And of course, you will need more links to your website, with your niche I would suggect you to try guest blogging, as there is lots of resources that would gladly publish quality content in exchange for a baclikink. You can start your search with this great guest blogging platform - http://myblogguest.com/.

I think this will do for starters, I hope it will help you a bit :)
And feel free to come back for further advice as soon as you are done with implementation of this portion of advice ;)

Hi Karen (http://lunagirl.com/),

First of all I want to say that the style and idea of your site are great, I like it immensly! :) And you have already done a great job on developing and promoting your site, as there is quite a number of nice backlinks pointing to your site. You've got nicely looking, friendly structure and interface and your site is already ranking well for a number of keywords connected with "victorian images" and the like. Also I see that you have researched your keywords and you are trying to use them in title tags, headings and inside the content.
In terms of title tags and headings the only thing I would recommend you do, would be create longer descriptive titles for your product pages. For a site like yours it is very important to generate a good tail of low volume keywords and use them on your product pages - in titles, URLs, headings, alts of images, in the names of image files and in the content of product pages. So, for example, instead of giving this page a title "Antique Photographs 1 Collage Sheet" http://lunagirl.com/collections/digital-collage-sheets-men-boys/products/antique-photographs-1-collage-sheet you could make it more descriptive and add a couple of keywords and make it something like "Antique black and white Victorian photographs collage sheet" - such title can potentially attract more traffic by long-tail queries.
Also with so many pages and products you should definitely create an html sitemap for your site where you would list the links to all of your products category by category. It should be something like you have here http://lunagirl.com/collections/all, but in order to accelerate the pace of search bots with which they crawl your site, you should list just the links to your products with their names as the anchor texts, use no images, no CSS on html sitemap pages and set "noindex, follow" directive in your robots meta tags on html sitemap pages. The directive should look like this <meta name="robots" content="noindex, follow, noarchive" />. All these is done to facilitate the job of Googlebot that would come searching for new URLs on your site.
And of course you definitely need to optimize the images on your site as much as it's possible, as there is a great potential for your project in terms of traffic from Google Images and Bing Images. For that, as I have already mentioned, you should pay attentioan to alts and titles of your images, their filenames and the text that surrounds the iamge. It all should contain unique and descriptive text on each image. I noticed that you have images listed in your general xml sitemap, but for better indexation of images if I were you, I would create a separate xml sitemap specifically for the images of your site. You can find Google's guidelines on images sitemap creation here https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/178636#
I liked your idea with free collage sheets for a link, I see that it actually gave you quite a number of backlinks! But the thing is that all the links do not contain any anchor text, so they do not help you us much as they could. I would suggest you offer visitors a ready made snippet with a URL and anchor text with keywords relevant to that URL. For example <a href="http://lunagirl.com/collections/digital-collage-sheets-holidays/christmas">vintage christmas photos</a>. But it's very important to often switch this snippet with link, say, at least once a week update it to a different URL and keyword, so that you don't get penalized by Google for too many similar anchors.
Also with such an amazing content you should definitely take some benefit from Stumble upon and Instagram. Those two resources have the audience that would gladly come to your site and share what they see.

I hope my advice helps you improve your great project further. Also I would like to offer you to make use of this great tool which can help you define how much you can afford to spend on SEO of your project.

Hello Vince,

It seems you already partially fixed this issue and moved the project to another domain?

On product category pages you have images for each product and all images have different sizes. It would be better if all images have the same size.

Victoria,

A cool lady on the homepage. But it would be more efficient to use this space to promote your featured products. You need to scroll too much to reach them at the bottom of your page.

Your filter drop-down menu on the page http://gleam-jewellery.myshopify.com/collections/all contains a lot of parameters that more likely to confuse visitors rather than help them find what they are looking for. It would be better to have here just 3 main product categories (earrings, bracelets and necklaces). When you have more products

http://gleam-jewellery.myshopify.com/products/black-agate-bee-teardrop-earrings: as a potential customer I’d like to know dimensions, weight, country of origine.

When I add a product to the shopping cart I discover that a tax may be applied. How can I know the amount of the tax and whether it will be charged? Can you highlight this info on your product page?

We’d also make “Continue checkout as a guest” option more obvious and visible.

You are currently index by Google as gleam-jewellery.myshopify.com, so when you move your project to gleamjewellery.co.uk please make sure that you set up redirects correctly (you should set up 301 redirects from …my.shopify.com domain to corresponding pages of gleamjewellery.co.uk).

Please also add relevant keywords into meta tag title of the homepage, product category pages and product pages. Your homepage and your product category pages would also benefit in terms of SEO if you add SEO-optimized texts there.

I hope this info will help you get relevant traffic and sales.

Kelly,

As your potential international customer I’d like to be able to convert the prices into USD right on your website. But if you target mostly Malaysia – it’s OK then.

We would recommend to make the menu simple – just several main product categories without concrete product as a drop down list (just 9 main product categories without any sub-menus). It will be easier for your customers.

We would also make photos on your product pages of a higher quality (higher resolution and without “noise”. This “noise” usually means that there was a lack of light when shooting those photos and the photos themselves are a little bit fuzzy).

Your “limited edition” feature could be highlighted right on your homepage and not just on your About us page.

From SEO point of view you need to optimize your project for relevant keywords. Please check the post from Elena Ruchko above in this thread to Tanay Mehta.

Good luck with your project!

Lana,

Nice website! From usability point of view we found no serious issues.

From SEO point of view you have a lot of space for improvement  We’d recommend you to make extensive keyword research to determine all relevant keywords for your project and then optimize corresponding pages for these keywords. You should then add these keywords to meta tag “Title” and add them within your page content (ideally an SEO-optimized user-friendly text for the homepage and each product category page. Not much – around 200 words per text with 2-4 most important relevant keywords).

For example your Homepage Title contains only Wall decals and Stickers keywords, but there are also keyword combinations like “cheap wall decals”, “removable wall decals”, etc. they have quite good search volume so we would definitely recommend you to add them. If you do keyword research you will definitely find additional keywords worth your attention.

The same is valid for your product category pages. For example we found keywords like “disney wall decals”, “cartoon wall decals” that would perfectly suit for your http://lanadecals.com/collections/superheroes-cartoons-1 page. So you could also add them to the meta tag of this page and write some small text containing these keywords for this page.

Please also pay attention to your meta tag Description. This is a very important call-to-action element that will help you to get more clicks from organic search. We’d recommend to make it more appealing and “tasty” so that people notice it among other websites in SERP and click on the link to your website. Here’s a link where you will be able to check how your titles and description will look in the search results http://seo-website-designer.com/Google-SERP-Emulator.

Good luck with your project and if you need our further help with onsite optimization, please let us know at contact@promodo.com.

Hello Andy!

My congratulations on the site launch! I am sorry that it took me so long to answer you.

Well, first of all you should do on-page optimization for all pages of your site  http://www.sedumgarden.net. You should optimize them so they feature keywords which will help your pages to be ranked in the search results. Prior to this stage you should do keyword research, about which me and Elena wrote earlier in this thread.

So for example, home page http://www.sedumgarden.net/. Current title is too short and it is almost doesn’t convey any information to Google to help it understand that this pages could be ranked for flowers connected search queries. You can use up to 70 character space in title so make the most of it when you decide on keywords.

Words written in H1 tag should also contain some keywords. At present in H1 tag there is a link to the Home Page.

Also, your home page doesn’t contain any text which is negative from Google point of view. You should add here a decent volume of text so you could add some keywords in it too. This is a must.

In the same manner – title, description, headings in H1 tag and text on the page  - you should optimize category pages like http://www.sedumgarden.net/collections/sedum-garden-1, http://www.sedumgarden.net/collections/hens-chicks and so on. And the same goes for product pages , you already have texts there so now the time to include there keywords and write proper titles and headings in H1 tag.

Product catalog. My advice is to optimize this  page for keywords too http://www.sedumgarden.net/collections/all. And use rel=canonical  so that search engine understands that this is the main page all other pages http://www.sedumgarden.net/collections/all?page=3, http://www.sedumgarden.net/collections/all?page=2 ; and so on are not its duplicates.

What is important to remember here is that Google really doesn’t like duplicates. For example, it could be especially not evident in titles and descriptions, however, if titles and description are repeated on different URLs, it will be a duplicate and page rankings in the search results will be decreased. You can easily monitor this issue in Google Webmaster tools.

I have checked your robots.txt file – I would also closed from indexation the Search category, just write the next: Disallow: /search

I understand that your website is just launching so it is indexed very poorly. To ensure it is indexed properly you should submit xml sitemap in Google Webmaster Tools, and also it will be good if you create html sitemap of your website and place it there, on the site.

Hope it helps! If any questions, please feel free to contact me!

Regards, Hanna

Paul,

It’s quite hard to tell whether you’d need to change your current website structure because we cannot see how visitors behave on your project at the moment. Though it is still not quite clear why you have 3 product categories Sweets, Mints, Gums and at the same time you have separated Bisquits&Cookies from Cakes.

You have a wide range of products and product categories on your project, so in your case there will be required deep investigation on how to develop the most efficient website structure and menu. We have a very strong usability department, so if you need our help for this please contact us at contact@promodo.com for more information.

From SEO point of view you should start with keyword research in order to find all relevant keywords for your homepage and each product category and then optimize these pages for these keywords. For example let’s check your www.britbox.co.uk/collections/chocolate page. Some sample keywords that we found are buy chocolate online, chocolates online, order chocolate online. You should add these keywords into your meta tag Title and add them within page content.  The same scenario is valid for all other pages of your project. It will help you to get more authority from Google point of view and improve your rankings.

I hope it helps you a bit :)

I would love some tips also please, it seems I have fallen off the internet!

Also I have 2 concerns - When I Google one of my products, for example, Jungle Animal Nursery Art, and look under "images" my shopify store images never comes up. I just opened a store at Luulla and those images are already showing up. If I keep scrolling and I do not found one image that is linked to my shopify store. Something is wrong.
A lot of people shop by images so this has me worried.

This one is about my H1 tag - when I look at "View Source" every page I get this -

I would truly appreciate it!

Thanks!

Hello Mille, It is not too late J I’ll be happy to have a look on your website.

Frankly speaking it is not obvious what market is in your priority, as the website is in English, I assume you are interested in selling across the globe so I will review the website keeping that in mind.

The second question that I had, at a glance, is the shipping policy. I’ve managed to find the necessary info on the product page only and there is no separate category to review and learn the shipping rates. I believe it is important and should be fixed.

What I really like is that website is full of great photos, you also have the social media icons and Instagram page. I have recently seen a great thing on one of the websites, they offer a 5% discount right on the checkout page for everyone who will share his order via Facebook or Twitter. The idea is really great and you can easily imagine the reaction of your friends when they see your new scarf on the Facebook. Some of them will definitely follow the link and order something from the store.

Speaking about the product page, I have found a feed with similar products right behind the products’ main photo and description, what is really great, but after I have added the product to cart I’ve been immediately redirected to the cart page without any chance to get back and continue shopping.

Now about the most important issue at the moment – duplicated content. To be totally frank with you it is everywhere. I have checked the product page description, the category page description, even the extracts from your blog and all the content has duplicates inside the website, and from the test domain like test.millerostock.com and some of them have cross domain duplicates. Considering Google’s latest policies I really think that unique description of the product is something that will help you grow and rate better. Try to write as many unique descriptions as possible or you can always outsource it someone on fiverr.com for $5 etc. Same is with the articles on your blog.

As for further promotion, try to contact different fashion bloggers and magazines. Even a small press release or review or an advise from a top blogger will help you in a great way. Also pay attention to your Facebook and Instagram accounts, I’m sure they will be also a great source of customers.

Hope that should help you. You can always drop me a line by the email (contact@promodo.com)

Evan, it seems that you've already done a great job with promoting your website. I’ve found a lot of reviews from such a great websites like cnet.com. You also have a YouTube channel with reviews that is really awesome. Here is what can be improved to make it even better:

As you have a YouTube reviews it will be great to add them to the product pages. So when someone is looking for a case he can watch the video right from the same page without leaving it.

Add more content to the category pages like http://www.loopattachment.com/collections/mummy-ipad and http://www.loopattachment.com/collections/the-clip that will help Google understand what the page is about. But please, add only unique content, do not copy it from the other websites.

Fix all the duplicates you have. I’ve found a huge amount of cross domain duplicates across the www, most of them goes for product description. Description on amazon.com is just the same as on your website. I don’t think Google will appreciate that.

Finally, I’ve tried to order Graphite Clip for IPod and as it appeared, on a checkout page, all clips in that color are sold out. It is disappointing to get to know about that on a checkout page. What is more I have no options to get back to the catalog and continue shopping. It can be improved by a simple notification that the item is temporally unavailable and a suggestion to leave the email to be notified when they will be back in stock. What is more, as you are a manufacturer, you can place several links to your partners and show the client where else such clip can be found.

If you have any questions about my review drop me a line by the email (contact@promodo.com)

Lorna, my best congratulations with the website launch. It is always so exciting when you enter the whole new world of www ecommerce.

If you have just started it is obvious there is no sense in researching your backlinks and positions still, I think, some brief guidelines will be useful for you especially taking into consideration that Google has already indexed the website and has about 35 pages in its index, you can check it by typing site:lootpress.ca in Google search box.

First of all I really recommend you to study this thread and read all the guidelines that we have already posted. Most of the Shopify issues are the same and I’m sure you’ll find a lot of useful info.

As you target mostly local market, it will be great to register in Google local business and ask your clients to post some reviews in your profile. It will be also great to create thread in local forums and blogs and tell more about your services in details.

Though Google has removed the statistic for keywords in Google Analytics still this is not a reason not to research for them, so make sure your title and other meta tags are optimized properly. You can find a link to infographic of how to do that somewhere in this thread.

Pay a decent attention to the content on the pages. It should be 100% unique and relevant. It really matters nowadays as Google became more and more demanding about that. Write it by yourself as you know your business best. Add a plugin that allows users to post unique reviews about every product you have. Make sure that the category pages are also optimized for general keywords and have some content for Google crawler.

I understand that it is hard to cover all the scope for improvement during this review so if you have any further questions you can always drop me a line by the email (contact@promodo.com

Good luck with your business.

Paul (wingnight.net),

Sorry for some late reply :)

Frankly speaking we didn’t realize from the scratch what the website is about. I mean the first thought when we saw fried chicken wing on your banner we thought you sell fried or frozen chicken wing (like a semi-finished products in supermarkets). The text below the image explained that you sell seasonings but it was not obvious at once.

It would be useful to understand the ingredients - what if I as your potential customer have intolerance to some of the ingredients?

We would also add “Buy now” button leading to checkout form. There are still people who do not understand that when they added a product to a cart they need to find “Your cart” button to proceed to checkout process.

In terms of SEO you’d need to optimize your project towards relevant keywords, i.e. add those keywords to Title meta tags and add them to page content. And here we have a question – why do you narrow down your audience to chicken wings likers only? You wrote that your seasonings suit well for other meals as well. In this case you should clearly deliver this message on all pages of your project including your homepage. And in this case you should optimize your project not only to keywords related to “chicken seasoning” but also to “pork seasoning”, “beef seasoning” etc.

But even if you want to position just for chicken likers you could use such keywords like “Fired chicken seasoning”, “Roast chicken seasoning”, etc.

If you need concrete recommendations on how to make a keyword research and optimize your project – please check the post from Elena Ruchko to Tanay Mehta above in this thread.

There are also problems with indexing the project in Google. Google finds just 7 pages of your project, but several of them are duplicate pages of your homepage: http://www.wingnight.net/shop.html, http://www.wingnight.net/index.html, http://www.wingnight.net/). It’s bad. You need to make /shop and /index page unavailable for Google and leave just your homepage www.wingnight.net.

At the same time Google cannot find for example your product pages: wingnight.net/collections/all, wingnight.net/products/wing-night-original-chicken-seasoning and wingnight.net/products/3-pack-free-shipping-wing-night-original. Maybe it’s just a matter of time. But if these pages do not appear in Google index within 1-2 weeks we’d recommend to investigate this issue more deeper.

I hope it helps you a bit.

Malika,

There are pages with no products like http://www.boutiquebleu.com/collections/t-shirts. If you do not plan to add products on those pages we would recommend to hide them from the website.

Bottom menu on some product category pages like (all, accessories, bracelet, chain etc.) on the page http://www.boutiquebleu.com/collections/jewelry is hard to find. We’d recommend to move it above the products.

You could also use the potential of cross selling by recommending some of your accessories for certain dresses or tops.

It would be also good to add some more information on your products like fabrics, country of origin etc.

If the product is sold out – what should I do next? Can I leave my Email to be notified when it’s available again? Are there any chances this product will be available again? If yes – when?

In terms of SEO you should optimize your project towards relevant keywords. Please check the post from Elena Ruchko to Tanay Mehta above in this thread. Elena has explained how to make keyword research and optimize the project for relevant keywords. You will need not only to optimize Title meta tags on your homepage, product category pages and product pages, but also add some SEO-optimized content to all these pages.

There is also a problem with duplicate content on your project. If you search for “One Shoulder Knit Tie Dye Dress features a stretch knit material and pink tie-dye finish.” You will find that there are 2 websites that rank for this text. And the first one is shopwiki.com. Google finds this website more relevant to this text rather than your website, although shopwiki redirect then to your website. It may harm your project in the future when you actively start SEO for it.

Good luck with your project and if you need any help in the future – feel free to contact us at contact@promodo.com.

Hi Erica!

My congratulations on website launch!

Please see what I can advise on SEO.

Firslty, pages content optimization – on all your pages should be optimized titles, descriptions, heading in H1 tag and to all pages should be added unique text. I have written many times about this already so please check my previous posts.

Now more in detail about some issues on your website.

You home page has optimized title and good description, however there is no heading which would contain some keywords for this page and which would put in h1 tag. Instead you use H1 tag for the link to the home page – your company logo which is in the left upper corner. This logo should be just a link, while h1 tag should be used to put page heading in it. It is good from SEO point of view, so please do this on all your website pages. For example on category pages there is no valuable information which would at least show that these products are for dogs. Also such category pages titles contain just a part of the page URL.

As I mentioned before adding texts to the pages is very essential and important. You should add text to the home page for example and optimize it for keywords and do the same with the category pages which are on your menu at the top. Make sure that when you add text to category pages it is duplicated on any other pages. If the text is too large and don’t fit into the website design, you can use “read more” buttons which will show just part of your text, but it will be still presented on the page.

Your search category I would advise to close from Google access so write in the robotx.txt Disallow: /search*. Also, there is another link to search directory at the left button corner of your website. Please make it “no follow” – you don’t want Google robot to waste its time crawling it J.

If you to view any category and list of products it contains, it turns out that the single product has to links to its product page, one is a product name and other one is when you click on image, It is not good. So if possible make the name and image as a one link , and if it is not possible, then one of these links no follow (image one is better).

Many of your product pages have text which is duplicated on the Internet many times (for example, on amazon website and so on). It is superharmful for your website, so what you should do is to write unique texts for all product descriptions.

One more tip. When I visit say this page  http://portlypet.com/collections/sports?page=2 ; and then want ot proceed to the first page I come to this URL  http://portlypet.com/collections/sports?page=1, ideally – I should be redirected to such page  http://portlypet.com/collections/sports. Because http://portlypet.com/collections/sports and http://portlypet.com/collections/sports?page=1 ; are duplicates. What should you do? Set the 301 redirect from http://portlypet.com/collections/sports?page=1 to http://portlypet.com/collections/sports.

And finally, this page  http://portlypet.com/collections/all seems to have the same content with home page. I would recommend to make it no index and follow with the help of robots meta tag in the page code. And watch carefully, because it seems that if you add content to them home page for example, it could duplicated on this page too.

A little bit of usability  - I would place about us page and contact page somewhere at the top. Users should always be able to easily find how to contact you.

Regards, Hanna

Melissa,

Something is wrong with your page load speed. Ideally it would be less than a second, and in your case the page load speed seems to be more than a second.

In terms of usability your menu is good. But it may be that there is a good potential to additionally improve it. For this purpose it would be good to make extensive keyword research to understand what keywords your potential customers use to find your products. It may give you good insight on what product categories are missing. And then each such product category should be optimized for relevant keywords in terms of SEO. The most important thing is here to add relevant keywords to your Title meta tags and page content. You can check the post of Elena Ruchko to Tanay Mehta above in this thread to get an idea on how to do it.

It seems also that you have taken product descriptions from other websites. It is bad in terms of SEO. It is called duplicate content, Google doesn’t like it and may penalize for that – you can check for example this text excerpt “Whole Life devour is a healthy way to top any dry dog food and end finicky behavior. The secret” and you will see that there’s a lot of websites ranking for this piece of text. There are big chances that you won’t be able to rank high unless you change texts and make them unique. Sorry for bad news but it’s Google.
We found 277 pages of your project indexed by Google. If the actual amount of pages considerably differs, it will mean that there are problems with indexing (with how Google perceives your project).

If you need any help with fixing those issues or with some additional consulting – feel free to contact us at contact@promodo.com

Christina (calissajewelry.com),

Please make sure all the content on your website is located on calissajewelry.com domain. For example some slides of your banner lead to your myshopify.com domain like http://calissa-jewelry.myshopify.com/collections/elegance.

Your users will find your “By Category” menu more relevant than “Jewelry Collection” menu, so we’d recommend you to shift “By category” menu to the right to make it more noticeable. But this is generally a minor issue.

For some of the products your visitors most likely would love to see more details. For example http://www.calissajewelry.com/collections/bracelet/products/the-love-loop: what is the length?

Have you considered cross selling? For example if someone is interested in this bracelet – maybe you have suitable rings or earrings that can be purchased in a set?

It’s great that you did your URLs friendly for users and search engines. Just do them even more friendly. For example you have the URL collections/bridal-jewe-ry. Why not doing it like collections/bridal-jewelry?

In terms of SEO you’d need to optimize the project for relevant keywords. Let’s take for example your page http://www.calissajewelry.com/collections/wedding-rings. You should do a keyword research and select relevant keywords like “wedding rings for women”, “diamond wedding rings” etc. and then optimize it for them. “To optimize” means mostly add relevant keywords to Title meta tag and compose a text for this page containing those relevant keywords. Yopu can check the post of Elena Ruchko to Tanay Mehta above in this thread for more details. Alternatively we can do it for you if you contact us at contact@promodo.com.

Samantha,

We would recommend you to use the space on your homepage more efficiently. You can promote your featured products here or give additional information about benefits of shopping with you.
http://fleurings.com/collections/earrings

It would be good to add the name of the product, price and “Buy now” and “Read more” buttons under each product image.

Besides this page should be optimized for relevant keywords like buy earrings, silver earrings, steel earrings etc. i.e. you should add these keywords to your Title meta tag and to the text on this page. Since you wrote that your products can be worn as hair pieces, you should also consider keywords from “hair jewelry” niche. If you need more detailed instructions on how to do keyword research, select keywords and write meta tags – please check the reply of Elena Ruchko to Tanay Mehta above in this thread.

The same recommendations are also valid for necklaces product category.
http://fleurings.com/collections/stiletto-necklace/products/large-gold-polished-necklace

The price and “Add to Cart” button should be on the first screen so that people do not need to scroll. Besides we would recommend to make all images as thumbnails so that users do not scroll to see all the pictures and can just click on thumbnails to enlarge images.

Please also amend text formatting on this page. Samantha, you sell not just jewelry but emotions, so the look-and-feel of the page is very important here :)

I hope it helps you a bit.

Justine,

Really cool jewelry! And we found no serious issues in terms of usability.

You product descriptions are also cool. You really sell positive emotions on your website and inspire visitors to make purchases. Though you could align product name and the price more compact under corresponding product images on your product category pages so that it is easier to understand to what product they relate.

In terms of SEO we would recommend you to make some tweaks because there is potential for improvement here.

First of all you need to optimize your pages for relevant keywords. For example custom made jewelry, handmade jewelry, handmade beaded jewelry, silver jewelry, silver earrings etc. if you don’t use these keywords on your pages and within your Title meta tags Google won’t be able to associate your project with these keywords and rank you high for them.

In order to optimize the project you will need to start with keyword research to determine all groups of relevant keywords. And when you do it you will discover that there are no landing pages for some groups of relevant keywords. As a result Google will have no page to display for these keywords. Let’s take for example “beaded jewelry” group of keywords. You have bracelets, necklaces and earrings in this category, but there is no page to optimize for generic keywords like “(handmade/handcraft) beaded jewelry”. Please check the post of Elena Ruchko to Tanay Mehta above in this thread on how to do keyword research and optimize the project.

Please also note that the texts on your project should be unique, i.e. these texts should not be published on other websites. At the moment the product descriptions from your website are available at least on etsy.com, shopwiki, jewelry-and-watches.become.com. It’s not a big issue at the moment because you are still ranked #1 for these texts and it means that Google thinks your website is a source for these texts. But we would recommend you at least link your Google + profile to the content that you create for the website. Here’s a link on how to do it: https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/2539557?hl=en&ref_topic=2371375

Google finds 441 pages on your project. Please compare it with actual amount of pages. If these figures differ considerably, it means that you have problems with indexing.

We would also recommend you to pay more attention to your Description meta tag. The text from this description is displayed as a snippet in search results right under the Title meta tag and it affects clickthrough rate, i.e. how many people will click on the link to your website when they see it in search results. The better and more appealing it is – the more visitors you will get from search results. Here’s a link where you can “play” with your Title and Description meta tags and check how they will look in the search results http://seo-website-designer.com/Google-SERP-Emulator.

We would also recommend you to add “Like”, “Tweet”, “Pin it” functionality under each product so that people could share images and product pages.

You could also try to promote your “Fan club” feature on each product page. There are chances that it will increase sales.

It’s great that you have a blog. It can help you not only maintain communication with your fans but also attract additional traffic for audience segments like “how to make jewelry”, “jewelry patterns and ideas” etc. Each such article should be optimized for relevant keywords and with each article you will be able to promote your products to your blog readers.

If you have a customers and fans database Email marketing would also help you sell more.

If you once decide to outsource promotion of your project, we will be glad to discuss this opportunity. Our Email is contact@promodo.com.

I hope our post helps you.

Hello Peter,

No wonder you can’t get people to the website, I wasn’t able to find any links leading to the website. And therefore people simply have no idea that the website exist, thought you have 140 pages in Google index. I can assume that you’ve already posted some press releases and they hadn’t been indexed yet but the general situation is still – no backlinks and therefore no traffic.

In such a case I will recommend you to start with PPC advertising in Google as the niche, you are targeting, has a lot of strong competitors with huge and trusted domains.  Here you will need to promote the website for several years until you have good rankings and traffic from organic. That is why starting from PPC will be the best option and at that time you can work on the link building on various forums to build a backlink profile and establish a source of referral traffic.

One more great idea is to attract customers from YouTube and Vimeo. You can film short reviews of the equipment you sell or a “how to” videos. Let’s say: several ways to attach your bike to a car etc.

As for the current website optimization, there are some small issues that I can see at the moment. Most of your content is unique, still I have found some duplicates inside the website and also cross domains. I have also paid attention to the titles or the page. Product pages titles are more or less ok but the category pages’ titles can be improved.

You see, the general strategy for the ecommerce website is to promote for a wide range of low volume long tail, mostly branded keywords. When somebody search for the particular item he usually types something like “Thule bike carrier buy online”, and this is that should be in the title and in the content. I’m talking in general here and you can always use keyword planner to check the relevance of the search query and the search volume for each keyword.

Hope that should help.

Britney Keeler (loveandbambii.com)

It seems that you are ranked for 9 keywords in Google top 20 and that is so great. As for the backlinks I have found only one, leading to your website. There were some fashion websites in this thread and you can find some ideas on how to build them and establish traffic to your website.

Speaking briefly, here is one of my previous posts - , try to contact different fashion bloggers and magazines. Even a small press release or review or an advice from a top blogger will help you in a great way. Also pay attention to your Facebook and Instagram accounts, I’m sure they will be also a great source of customers.

As for the user experience design, there are some aspects that I don’t really like. First of all when you are on the home page, most of the screen is covered by the banner. I have a 22” monitor and still I can’t see the list of products below the banner. Try to move the logo to the left and move the banner upper or make it narrower to show the list of the products below it. It will be even better if you show the categories instead of products.

Speaking further the font that is used in the main menu is really really small. What is more, it is almost the same color as the background and it is hard to distinguish it and read. I have also notice that you have “catalog” and “Shop ” categories but I don’t understand is there any difference between them.

Further recommendations will be the same as for the most of the websites here, I mean the thin content on the category pages and product pages, title optimization and keyword research for long tail search queries.

Doug  - Unionapparel.org

It seems that the website has just been launched. I was able to find only two products and one of them is sold out J I suppose you add more products in future, otherwise Google will not rank the website high.  And to be totally frank with you for such kind of websites organic search is not the best source of traffic. As you offer the apparel with philosophy the best way will be to go for classic marketing and contact bloggers and other public leaders directly. Send them some free samples and ask for the review. In such a way you will get a PR for your brand. Promote the philosophy not the apparel.

As for the website, you have some duplicates inside your blog, and some cross domains as well. I would also pay attention to the description of the products, at the moment there are no description.

Further think about the size chart because it is not obvious what the exact measures of the “S” size or “XL” size are.  Sizing chart will help a lot here.

Clint - lumenatorled.com

As I understood you are the manufacturer so you are interested mostly in wholesales than in retail.

So the first thing that came to my mind is to promote the company on various exhibitions, off-road meeting, etc. offline. You have mentioned on “about us” page that there are a lot of competitors on the market so you have a great chance to demonstrate the advantages of your product just in front of your potential customers. Further, to support that strategy with online, it will be really great to create a short presentation or reviews video and post them on your website and on YouTube. The topic for the video can be anyone you like, let’s say, the marine usage of the lighting etc.

As for the website, I have noticed that there is no text on the product and category pages like http://lumenator.myshopify.com/collections/quad-row-light-bars . What is more the text on this page http://lumenator.myshopify.com/collections/work-lights has plenty of duplicates across the website. Think about a great description for each product, perhaps even with a review video on each page.

Speaking further, on your home page, clicking on the banner gives you nothing. I mean there are 4 banners there and none of them redirect me to any new page, just the same home page. What can be done is to create a separate landing page for each category : agricultural, marine and off-road, and show suitable product for each category on the pages. In such a way you will increase the number of relevant pages and increase the value of the website in the eyes of the customer.

What I’d also recommend you is to create a photo or video base of the beam shots to demonstrate the actual performance of the lightings.

As for the further promotion think about communication on forums, it is totally free of charge and can bring you really good traffic along with PR.

Hope that will help you.

Karyn,

We found no serious issues in terms of usability. Maybe just your menu at the top – black menu items on a brown background – they are hard to ready because of this color mix. It would be better to make menu items more noticeable.

In terms of SEO there is space for improvements. You already added some relevant keywords to your Title meta tags and it is good. But if you do additional keyword research you will definitely find more keywords to optimize your project for. For example keywords related to “cabinet handles” have also good traffic volume.

Besides please note that Title meta tags should be unique on each page of the project. At the moment you have duplicate meta tags on many pages. For example http://knobsandposts.com/collections/bath-vanities and http://knobsandposts.com/collections/decorative-pulls page have the same Title meta tag “Knobs, Cabinet Knobs, Drawer Pulls, Islands, Vanities”. Google doesn’t like it. You should optimize each category page for keywords related to this category. In this way you will maximize the output from onsite SEO for your project.

Google finds 1210 pages of your project in its index. Please check it with the actual amount of pages. If the figures differ significantly, pay attention to it and make deeper investigation on this matter. If your website has less pages in the reality, it will mean that a lot of unnecessary or duplicated pages are indexed.

Hope it helps you :)

Daniel bikinibay.co.uk

It seems that the website has just been launched and it looks like you hadn’t filled all the pages yet. I have found a standard piece of text on the “about us” page. At the moment this page is already indexed by Google along with 27 other pages of your website.

Speaking in general you are entering a very competitive market with old and trusted players. So to rank high in organic you’ll have to promote the website intensively for several years. You should also expand your website with products and pages and write quality content there, at the moment you don’t have any content on the product pages and category pages. Speaking further the website should be optimized perfectly with the keywords in title and h1 tag. As I can see now, most of the pages have the same title and are not optimized at all. As for the links it will be really hard here, the products are not unique so the strategy with forums and blogs will not be really effective. You should definitely think about PPC campaign during the first year of promotion.

Speaking about the user experience point of view, I wasn’t able to zoom in the images and take a closer look at the swim suits. All other things are more or less ok.

Good luck with the project Daniel.

Greetings Alex!

Please check my feedback on your store http://menorahtree.com.

Firslty, I enjoyed staying on your website, so I will focus on SEO aspects which I think are more essential for your website right now.

The most important thing which could be comparatively easily done and at the same time bring benefits is on page optimization. Let's start with home page. Title of this page should contain a sentence telling briefly about the page content, it should contain several winning keywords which you would like this page to be ranked in the search engines.

Secondly, I would also improve description tag  - I would make it more "selling", with good call to action and content which would describe the website main purpose. Unlike the title tag, the description you write for users only, so there is no need to include keywords there.

As to the h1 tag it is not used correctly in your case. H1 tag is highlight heading which describes webpage content. Such heading should contain at least one keyword, and if search engine spots these keywords in the heading with H1 tag, it will make it more relevant to the search query in the eyes of search engine.

However, in your case H1 tag i used for the website logo. What should be done is to leave website logo and link to it just like a link, and instead use H1 tag for the webpage heading.  The same should be done on all other pages.

You home page contains already some text, so now the test is to optimize it - include several keywords.

The same should be done with category pages, for example http://menorahtree.com/collections/ornaments, http://menorahtree.com/collections/accessories, however, here you should also add more text  - firstly, because Google likes texts,  and secondly  because it will enable you to include several keywords there.

Please mind that all pages should have only unique text, title, description.

The same optimization procedure should be done for product pages as well, such as http://menorahtree.com/collections/accessories or http://menorahtree.com/products/menorah-tree – I mean only those products which are sold on your website.  I see that lots of products are sold on third party resources such as Amazon. All the links which lead to external website in this case should be made “no follow” as external links decrease your link juice which is negative.

It seems that everything is ok with xml sitemap and robots.txt on your website, but I would also add html sitemap to the website to improve user experience and make sure the website is indexed properly.

Now a bit about usability.  I saw some product which are on sale, it is not obvious until you go to the corresponding category and see that some products are tagged “Sale”. Probably it is worth to mention about these products on the home page.

Another point is adding items to the shopping cart. After I have added the item to the cart, the page shows  me two option : “Thank you” and “Cart”, while “Cart” is clickable it is not quite obvious what to do with “Thank you” – probably, it could be something like “Continue shopping”.

Hope my advice is helpful, feel free to write me, should you have any questions.

Regards, Hanna

Elliot,

In terms of usability we would recommend you to make a separate page describing your shipping policy. Otherwise the message “Type in FREESHIPP at checkout for free shipping on all orders” confuses a bit. Do you ship for free to any country? What if missed this information – what would be the shipping rates? What if I landed on your product category page or on the page with concrete product – how can I find more information on shipping? From our experience most visitors come to the project in your niche not to your homepage but to your product category pages and pages with concrete products, so these visitors have no chance to see this message.

Good picture on your homepage, though we would recommend you to use this space more efficient. You could promote your featured items or product categories here. Anyway we would recommend you to make the picture smaller, because at the moment it takes too much screen space, your users will have to scroll too much.
http://www.bedazzledboutique.com/collections/all

You have 2 identical items called Amy Matto with identical pictures. These items lead to separate landing pages (http://www.bedazzledboutique.com/collections/amy-matto and http://www.bedazzledboutique.com/collections/amy-matto-1). But both landing pages contain the same product range. Why?

Your evening wear menu item contains sub-menu items for 2 different parameters – type of cloths (dresses and gowns) and designers. At the same time your Designers menu item doesn’t contain any sub-items. Why not making evening dresses and gowns a part of Apparel menu and move evening wear by brand to Designers menu item?

As for your shoes category – it would be useful to have filtering by type (sandals, boots etc.).

In order to understand what would be the right website structure for your project you could do keyword research. This research will help you to determine all groups of relevant keywords for your project. From Google point of view each such keyword group should have corresponding landing page optimized for this group of keywords. For example there are keywords like hunter boots, hunter boots sale, where to buy hunter boots etc. and at the moment there is no such page on the project optimized for these keywords. As a result you won’t be ranked for these keywords because Google has nothing to display for these keywords.

If you do not want to do keyword research you could just check your TOP competitors and copy their website structure.

From SEO point of view you also need to optimize your pages for relevant keywords. For example “buy apparels online” would suit to your homepage, keywords like “buy Amy Matto” would go to your http://www.bedazzledboutique.com/collections/amy-matto page etc. With “optimize” we mean adding relevant keywords to your Title meta tag and adding some texts to these pages. These texts should also contain corresponding keywords. This will help Google associate your project with these keywords and rank you for at least some part of them.

We would also recommend you to add more description to your products. It will help both UX and SEO. For example here: http://www.bedazzledboutique.com/collections/amy-matto/products/amy-matto-front-twist-dress - for example what is the fabrics for this dress?

Elliot, please do not take our comments as a critics, this is more like additional space for improvement and your sales increase :)

Good luck with your project, and if you need our help with SEO or UX – you can find us at contact@promodo.com.

Baloonmum Designers,

Sorry for some delay with our reply :) You have quite unusual product and it took some additional time to understand how we could help you.

Displaying your physical address usually helps to increase visitors’ confidence in any project and increase sales.
What if I need some custom bunch of balloons? Will you be able to help me? If yes, it is highly recommended to provide more detailed information about this option.

Let’s take for example this page here: http://www.balloonmums.com/collections/frontpage/products/delight-balloonquet:

What are the dimensions of this product? You have this written in the text, but not many visitors do read texts nowadays, besides even when we found the dimensions in the text – it is still not easy to imagine how it will look in the reality. It would be better to show the dimensions right on the image for example by adding some slide rule as you did on your blog.

You have several colour options available on your product page but it is not easy to imagine them without a picture. If it’s not too time-consuming we would recommend you to make pictures of every colour mix available.
In terms of SEO you’d need to add relevant keywords to your Title meta tag and your texts. We would recommend you to pay attention to “balloon decorations, balloon bouquets” or even “unusual gifts” niches. You can check the post from Elena Ruchko to Tanay Mehta above to understand how to do keyword research and then optimize the project for relevant keywords.

Please also note that all texts should be unique, i.e. do not use the same texts for several pages of your project. For example if you type "This is in-between our larger (Impressive Balloonquet) and our smaller (Favorite Balloonquet)" in Google you will see that at least 3 pages of your project do have identical text. It is bad from SEO point of view.
We hope this information helps you!

NT,

We found no serious issues in terms of usability. Everything is quite convenient and logical.

The only 2 issues are your homepage and purchasing process.

We would recommend making the homepage more informative. Frankly speaking at first glance it is not quite clear what the website is about. If you place some featured products on your homepage – it will be more informative.

Your Cart seems to be not visible enough. When we clicked on “purchase” button it took some time to find the Cart on the page to click on it and proceed to checkout.

Confidentiality is very important for many of your customers. It is not clear from your website who will be stated as a sender of a parcel via Australia post – sex-shop company or some no-name company?

In terms of SEO you need to optimize your pages for relevant keywords. For example your Vibrators page. There are keywords like vibrator(s) for women, rabbit vibrator(s), female vibrator(s) etc. Currently you have no such keywords on your page. So we would recommend you to make extensive keyword research and then add relevant keywords to your Title meta tag and to the text on this page. The same scenario is valid for all other product categories. You can check the post of Elena Ruchko to Tanay Mehta above to get more information on how to do keyword research, write meta tags and optimize text content.

We hope it helps you :)

Daniel,

If you mean such pages like http://www.westwoodsfootwear.co.uk/collections/handbags, http://www.westwoodsfootwear.co.uk/collections/dav-rain-boots etc. - they are indexed by Google. Generally Google finds 653 pages on your project.

You could additionally optimize your pages for relevant keywords – adding them to H1 tag, adding SEO-optimized texts. Though most possible reason is that your website just lacks authority to be ranked high at the moment.

Please note that apart from onsite optimization there is another very important factor for successful rankings – it’s the number of backlinks to your project. The more quality backlinks you have to your project – the better will be your rankings.

We found backlinks from only 5 domains to your project. Here they are:
shoeshop.org.uk
veganforum.com
pinterest.com
myshopify.com
plus.google.com

From our experience your niche is quite competitive, and such a number of backlinks is just not sufficient for high rankings.

Another thing is that if your website is a fresh one (if you launched it 1-2 months ago and the domain itself has no previous history) it won’t be ranked high in such a short period of time.

Anyway we think that you should pay attention to link building now and get more links from thematical resources.

Good luck with your project and if you need our help with link building – do not hesitate to contact us at contact@promodo.com!

Hi All

We rebuilt an existing ecommerce store in Shopify and launched it about a month ago.

www.executiveaccessories.com.au

Would love feedback on its usability and particularly on how it performs from an SEO point of view. Our previous site was performing ok, but nose-dived earlier in the year when Google did its update.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Thanks

Brandon,

It’s hard to give you some recommendations from scratch because your niche is quite specific. But when we landed on your homepage it took us some time before we understood what it’s about. So maybe some motto in your header (something like “Use PayPal on Amazon”) would help get the idea of the website quicker.

From SEO point of view we found at least 2 groups of keywords – the ones related to “how to use paypal on amazon”, “paying with paypal on amazon” etc. and keywords related to “amazon gift cards”.

One of the options for you would be to create a blog or Articles section to post SEO-optimized content to cover “how to use paypal on amazon” niche. And the page http://www.weusepaypal.com/collections/amazon could be optimized and promoted for keywords related to “amazon gift cards” niche. In this way you can cover both segments of relevant audience.

But ideally you should start with extensive keyword research to find all segments of your potential audience and all keyword groups they use. After that you can optimize the project as it was described in the post of Elena Ruchko to Tanay Mehta above in this thread.

We hope this helps you a bit!

Hi Kristina!

I am finally getting back to you with recommendations for your website http://www.swankychicdesigns.com/.

Firstly, all your pages need simple yet very important optimization for keywords. Please let me not to repeat this once again, as I mentioned this issue in many of my previous posts – your titles and descriptions should be optimized, first of all, for on the home page and on category pages such as http://www.swankychicdesigns.com/collections/jewelry. To all pages should be added large enough, unique text. Also, all your pages should have heading put in the H1 tag. Such heading should include keywords.

Now let’s proceed to other problems which I have found on your website. The search section on your website should be closed from Google bot access – it doesn’t need this kind of pages in search index. Close it with the entry in robots.txt    Disallow: /search?*.

Pagination. If I for example on this page  http://www.swankychicdesigns.com/collections/jewelry?page=2 and then get back to this page http://www.swankychicdesigns.com/collections/jewelry , instead of such URL, the page opens with another URL http://www.swankychicdesigns.com/collections/jewelry?page=1. http://www.swankychicdesigns.com/collections/jewelry?page=1 and http://www.swankychicdesigns.com/collections/jewelry ; are two URL for one page, this creates dublicates which are really harmful for the page rankings in Google. That is why you should use 301 redirect which will redirect the user from http://www.swankychicdesigns.com/collections/jewelry?page=1 to http://www.swankychicdesigns.com/collections/jewelry.

Pages which are almost empty should be also closed from Google access, search engine doesn’t like them. An example of such pages on your website is http://www.swankychicdesigns.com/collections/designer-handbags

Category pages on your website currently have rel="canonical" which points at the same page – you should remove such tag from category pages. By category pages I mean http://www.swankychicdesigns.com/collections/scarves, http://www.swankychicdesigns.com/collections/home-decor , and so on.

Once again about pagination. Currently if I as a user want to navigate from one page to another, I have only one option, I need to click “Next” or “Previous”, not only does it create negative user experience as it is not convenient to click from say, 7th page to 1st , but also it is not beneficial for Google indexation. If you want the fullest and optimal indexation of your website you should expose more links to its attention, my advice is to make buttons with links to say, from 1st page to 10th ,  just like it is done on Promodo’s website. Please see the attachment.

www vs non www versions. Your website should be opened only for one version   - any of these two – with www or without www at the beginning.  In your case it could be http://www.swankychicdesigns.com, and if the user types just swankychicdesigns.com, he should be redirected with 301 redirect to http://www.swankychicdesigns.com. Currently if to type swankychicdesigns.com, the user is taken to some other website http://www.myawesomeshopifystore.com , which of course is wrong).

You should also work more on product pages, such as http://www.swankychicdesigns.com/collections/home-decor/products/mercury-glass-vase, cause currently there is almost no text for them, which is really negative in terms of SEO.

And as to the social media buttons, which I see on your website, I would recommend to make them nofollow, so that Google bot doesn’t waste its valuable time on crawling them)

Hope it was helpful!  Feel free to contact me with any questions!

Regards, Hanna

Matt,

It seems you are ranked for 3 keywords in TOP 20 at the moment. And it seems you had slow traffic decrease in 2012, then there was some stable period and then you seemed to have some traffic fluctuations this summer. The number of referring domains has been growing slowly this autumn so it’s hard to tell the reasons of such situation without having a look in your Google Analytics and understanding your link building strategy.

Anyway we would recommend having some backlinks with relevant keywords as anchors – this would help improve rankings for relevant keywords like “energy bars”, “energy gels” etc.

You could also additionally optimize your pages for such relevant keywords like “best energy bars”, “protein bars” etc., i.e. add relevant keywords to your Title meta tag and texts on corresponding pages. This will help Google associate your project with these keywords and rank you higher for these keywords.

We also noticed a lot of people asking for “energy gel reviews”, “energy bars recipes”, etc. If you post SEO-optimized articles related to recipes, reviews etc. on your blog, you will be able to attract this category of users to your website. And there are high chances that some of these users will purchase your products.

Good luck with your project! And if you need deeper investigation with your analytics data and SEO works - feel free to contact us at contact@promodo.com.

Alexandra,

It seems you already done some basic optimization for high volume keywords like wedding bouquets. Though in order to be ranked high for such keywords you need to have much larger backlink profile (at the moment we found only 2 backlinks to your project). For comparison your competitor thebridesbouquet.com who is ranked TOP 10 for wedding bouquets has around 354 backlinks from unique domains. This is actually the main reason for not being rank high and not getting more visitors. If you build links on relevant resources you will not only improve your rankings but also attract additional relevant visitors directly.  You can check where thebridesbouquet.com has placed their backlinks and at least try to copy their approach.

One of the options for you would be to target long tail keywords like “wedding bouquet flowers”. For these keywords you have much more chances to be ranked high via onsite optimization even without a lot of backlinks. For this you should run extensive keyword research to determine all such keywords and keyword groups. But anyway our main advice would be to build more backlinks to your project.

Besides please note that your competitors have optimized their project for keywords like “Bridal Bouquets” and “wedding flowers”. This is additional potential for getting more relevant visitors, but you need to optimize the project for these keywords and additionally support it with backlinks.

We hope these recommendations help you. If you feel we can be of assistance with both onsite optimization and link building – feel free to reach us at contact@promodo.com

Christopher

Cool, you already done onsite optimization and we actually found no serious issues to improve at the moment.

You could additionally make some minor tweaks like adding “”decalls” keyword to your H1 tag though we are not sure it will help you a lot at the moment.

If we speak about onsite works – we would work on increasing the range of products now. It would definitely help for further rankings and organic traffic improvement.

Additionally we would work on removing duplicate content on the project. For example if you “google” for this phrase here: "Our collection of nature inspired wall vinyls are great for adding that finishing touch in your home or office. We have designs that will completely transform your rooms and walls such as" you will see that 2 pages of your project have identical texts and are indexed with this content in Google.

When we entered “Childrens wall stickers work like magic transforming plain walls into something colourful and exciting. Our growing collection of childrens wall stickers can be produced in any” Google found the following pages:

http://www.wallboss.co.uk/collections/kids/0my-tag0
http://www.wallboss.co.uk/collections/kids
http://www.wallboss.co.uk/collections/kids?page=2

Ideally there should be only 1 page found for any piece of text.

Such pages like http://www.wallboss.co.uk/collections/kids/0my-tag0 should be definitely be closed from indexation.

In terms of onsite SEO you could additionally experiment with doing your Title meta tag, text content a little bit more keyword-reach. But do not overspam them with relevant keywords.

If you want your rankings to grow quicker we’d also recommend you paying more attention to your backlink profile.

At the moment we found only around 20 backlinks from unique domains to your project. From our experience it is not much.

Another issue is that the number of backlinks to your project is around 1K but they all come from just 20 unique domains. And the majority of backlinks (966 backlinks) come from one and the same domain - hearthandmade.co.uk. For Google the number of unique domains is much more important and Google doesn’t like too much site wide links. So we’d recommend you to make the backlink profile more manifold.

Keep up your good work!

Rick,

Your domain name sounds cool, but from Google point of view .it domains are associated with Italy and from your website you seem to target USA. From our experience in some niches it is not critical but in some niches with high competition and large amount of projects with local and international domains it is critical to have local domain. So this issue requires additional investigation to check projects in TOP 10 for USA.

Your project seems to be not optimized for any keywords. And frankly speaking it’s quite specific product for us, so we have some troubles with finding relevant keywords for your project. We found not much traffic for keywords related to vaping kit, vape starter kits, vaping starter kits. At the same time keyword groups related to “smokeless cigarettes”, “e-cigs” have much more relevant traffic. If these keywords are generally relevant for you we would recommend optimizing your project for them. If you’d like to learn more on how to optimize it for these keywords please check the posts above, especially the post of Elena Ruchko to Tanay Mehta.

After you find relevant keywords we’d recommend you to add them to Title meta tag of corresponding pages and add some text content to the website. Due to lack of SEO-optimized user friendly text content Google will not be able to associate your project with relevant keywords.

Most probably you know some of your direct competitors – you can check their websites to find out what keywords they target in their promotion. If www.provape.com is one of your direct competitors you can check them more thoroughly in this regard. Besides due to a more accurate design this project looks more credible so definitely they will have higher conversion rate. Please take it as additional space for improvement and not criticism 

We hope this helps you a bit.

Good luck with your project!

hotelganpati256,

Frankly speaking we found not much traffic in “Bhopal hotels” niche. Even if we take “India hotels” niche – we found a lot of traffic for Goa only. Besides from our experience in your niche organic traffic doesn’t play too big role. We would recommend you to pay more attention to partnering with booking websites, ticket reservation websites etc. to get more relevant visitors from this type of projects.

But if you have time and resources for that you could still optimize your project for relevant keywords like “hotels in Bhopal” etc.You can find more detailed recommendations on how to do it in the post of Elena Ruchko to Tanay Mehta above in this thread.

One more thing – let’s assume I’m a US citizen and looking to book a hotel in Bhopal. And let’s assume I found your project via organic search or came from other sources – how can I understand what will it cost for me? Can you add some widget to your website that could give me at least rough estimate on your prices in USD?

Good luck with your project!

Hanna, I would love to hear any thoughts or advice you might have for me about coldpressjuicers.net's website. I went live a days ago with a test round of PPC advertising (adwords, product ads, bing keyword ads, facebook news feed ad) that resulted in about 600 unique visitors but no sales, so I'm trying to figure out if there is a barrier to conversions right now. Due to a young domain age I'm still a few pages down in Google's organic results for most keywords. Thanks in advance! Dana

Hi Hanna K -
Thank you for your time to give us a report. I have a few problems with duplicate title tags that's showing in my webmasters account. I believe you picked up on the problems by stating that some pages shouldn't be indexed.

I have 33 duplicate title tags showing, I have included some below:

Products – Wallboss Wall Stickers | Wall Art Stickers | UK Wall Stickers | Bespoke Design
/collections/all/0my-tag0
/collections/all
/collections/all?page=2
/collections/all?page=3
/collections/all?page=4

Would it be possible to receive a quote from yourself to fix this issue? as I don't trust myself with that stuff! aha,
Can I contact you via your website?
Kind regards,
Chris

Hello Cindy,

In terms of usability ideally your layout should attract visitors’ attention to your menu at the top of the page and the products themselves. Your current homepage seems to be a little bit overloaded with colours and various secondary elements.

We’d also change colour scheme on your pages. For example http://k9kauai.com/pages/dog-bandanas - because of the grey background your Molokai product category is not visible at all.

In terms of SEO there are 2 major factors for successful rankings – well-done onsite optimization for relevant keywords and the number of backlinks from third-party websites. Let’s have a look at both factors on your project.

Your niche has quite a lot of traffic and a lot of relevant keywords, but your project is not optimized for them at the moment. You have “dog collars” keyword on your homepage within the text content of the page itself. But you should also add this keyword to your Title meta tag. In this way you will increase relevancy of your project to this keyword. But you will also increase the click-through rate and get more relevant visitors from organic search. At the moment even if your potential customers will find you in search results, they will see “K9 Kauai: "Collars of the Islands"” text (this is your Title meta tag) and “K9 Kauai (” This is your Description meta tag. With current meta tag many visitors will not click to your link and won’t go to your website even if they will see it in search results. These 2 meta tags considerably affect the number of visitors from organic search and we recommend paying attention to them.

Besides not all of your page are indexed by Google at the moment. For example we haven’t found the page k9kauai.com/collections/hawaii-big-island-red/products/red-honu  in Google. It may be that they are new and that Google crawler will find them when it crawls your project next time. But it may mean that you have problems with Google indexation that in turn usually means some problems in the webpage code. This issue requires deeper investigation and it is critical for your project. So please do it with a highest priority. If you are not familiar with these issues by yourself you can hire an SEO provider for a one-time SEO consulting and website audit.

There are also some strange pages like http://k9kauai.com/?sid=49c0ffb3d38e10cdf39e21249c42f174. In most cases such pages mean that the CMS of the website is set up incorrectly. But such issues usually also require deeper investigation.

And please also note that Google doesn’t like duplicate content. And it seems there are a lot of identical product descriptions on your project. For example http://k9kauai.com/collections/maui-collection-pink-bandanas/products/bandana-pink-plumeria and http://k9kauai.com/collections/maui-collection-pink-bandanas/products/pink-plumeria-dark have identical texts.

As you can see there is a lot of space for improvement on your project. As soon as you fix all these issues you will experience progress with rankings.

As for offsite issues (the number of backlinks from third party website) – we found o backlinks to the project. So this is another area that you should work with.

Good luck with your project and hope our recommendations will help you with it!

Hello Hanna!

I was checking some tips on how to improve our SEO when suddenly bumped into your thread. I was wondering if you could please offer some insight on the way our site and its content is conceived in terms of SEO.

Along with our Shopify store we do have an Etsy store that was built back in 2008. To be honest the idea of having our very own identity instead of being "another Etsy store" sounded pretty attractive to us but the thing is no matter how much we do promote the site, most customers place their orders via Etsy so we were wondering what's wrong with the way our official site products are announced.

Here's our URL. It would be really helpful if you could please take a first glance at it, telling us your impressions.

Thanks so much in advance!

HI,
It seems you missed me - www.alleykids.com I orginally posted 22 days ago.

Right now my main concern is google is not indexing my shopify images. I think it has to do something with CDN, but i dont really understand it. I came here from Big Cartel ( I out grew that site) my images were all over google then.

When I Google one of my products, for example, Jungle Animal Nursery Art, and look under "images" my shopify store images never comes up. I just opened a store at Luulla and those images are already showing up. See attachment

I posted in the below thread about this and it seems I am not alone with this problem. Any ideas would be much appreciated!
http://ecommerce.shopify.com/c/ecommerce-marketing/t/images-not-being-indexed-by-google-156320

Thanks!
Susan

Hi

We seem to be having the same issue as Chris with duplicate title tags and descriptions caused by

0mytags0 and also product categories with multiple pages!

Is there a simple fix for a non-tech-head!

I did submit our site for review but it may have been missed - you offer a great service here Hanna it must take up a lot of your time. If you get chance to review it I would be so grateful.

Hello Wendy,

Our congratulations! Well done. We have found no issues in terms of usability for now. Your website structure suits well for SEO. It maybe that there are groups of keywords and audience segments that are not covered with current structure (for example “designer bags”-related keywords) and you will need to create additional pages for that. But this issue requires deeper investigation with complete keyword research in your niche.

In terms of SEO we’d recommend to additionally improve your Title meta tags. For instance you’d need to make unique Title meta tags for all relevant pages. Let’s take your “womens handbags” product category available at http://www.executiveaccessories.com.au/collections/leather-handbags as an example. All sub pages have unique URLs, but identical Title meta tag “Leather Handbags | Executive Accessories”. We’d recommend amending Title tags at least as follows:
http://www.executiveaccessories.com.au/collections/leather-handbags/clutch: Clutch handbags
http://www.executiveaccessories.com.au/collections/leather-handbags/crossbody-bags: Crossbody bags
http://www.executiveaccessories.com.au/collections/leather-handbags/crossbody-bags+pierre-cardin: Pierre Cardin Crossbody bags
etc.

I’m sure if you do extensive keyword research you will find the best keywords matching those pages. General idea is that Title meta tag should be unique for each such page and it should contain relevant keywords related to that product category.

You have duplicate text content on some pages but it seems you already solved this problem with rel="canonical" tag.

The number of backlinks from third-party unique domains seems to grow constantly.

Wendy,

Keep up your good work and good luck with your project!

Hello Erin,

The pop-up banner on your homepage definitely decreases the conversion and makes the bounce rate higher.

Frankly speaking because of too much colours and animated banners the website confuses a bit and it’s not quite easy to understand what it’s all about. A slice of pizza near the cursor and an ice cream also confuse users.

Though it may be a specific feature of your target audience and if you are generally satisfied with the level of conversion, it’s OK to leave it as it is.

It’s great that you added brand names into Title meta tag. But in terms of SEO you’d need to additionally optimize your pages for additional keywords. For example your http://www.shopjeen.com/collections/sweatshirtscould contain additional keywords like sweatshirts for women, pink sweatshirts, cool sweatshirts etc. The same is valid for other product categories.

We’d also recommend you to add additional product categories with corresponding landing pages. For example you have a lot of backpacks but they are listed together with clutches, wallets etc. There are many relevant keywords for “backpacks” niche and it is reasonable to make a separate SEO-optimized user friendly landing page for this product category.

Once you have completed an extensive keyword research, have amended website structure to cover all segments of your potential audience and have optimized the whole project for all groups of relevant keywords you will need to build more backlinks to your project.

We hope our recommendations help you a bit. And if you need any help with your project, do not hesitate to contact us at contact@promodo.com

Hello Dana,

In terms of usability we found no issues to report at the moment. Most probably 600 visits is just not enough to get first sales. And it is not much to judge whether there are problems with usability or not. It is very important from what sources these visitors came, for what keywords, what was the original ad message that brought those visitors and where these visitors landed on your project (on what pages). Are your pricing competitive enough? Please check all these aspects in your campaigns and maybe you will find additional space for improvement there.

In terms of SEO you could optimize your Title meta tag for product category pages and add SEO-optimized user-friendly texts there.

Besides you have a number of keywords that users enter to get more information about cold press juices and cold press juicers like: “cold press juicer comparison”, “cold press juicer review”, “cold press juicer reviews”. You could write a series of articles covering these and similar keywords to attract additional users to your project and then try to convert them into buyers.

Good luck with your project!

Julie from julesbridaljewellery.com

To be frank with you, I suspect your website is under some kind of Google filter. I believe you’ve noticed that the traffic flow has significantly decreased from April and is now somewhere closer to zero.

I have checked the positions in April in Google top 20 and it was 132 keywords you’ve been ranked for in SERP. In May there were 16 keywords only, and currently I was able to find 5 keywords. Then, I have checked your back linking profile and have found there a lot of links with aggressive anchors. It seems that you’ve been penalized by Google penguin, so please check your webmaster tools for any kind of emails from Google. Especially pay attention to manual actions category.  However to give you a more precise answer a small research is required, but I believe the reason is a low quality links that you have.

As for the website in general, I like the design, and the optimization is more or less ok. It is obvious that the titles were optimized buy a SEO company or a freelancer, however the texts on category pages and the homepage can be added to make the pages more Google friendly. All other things are generally ok so your main priority is Google penalty at the moment and restoring the traffic flow.

Drop me a line at contact@promodo.com if you wish, I believe we will be able to help you with the penalty.

BattleBalm.com

Dylan, as you offer a unique handmade product, SEO is not the best option for you. Your best option is to promote on different kind of topic platforms and improve your brand name along with product features. Try to communicate on forums and blogs. I’m sure it will be better than spending money for SEO.

Still, if we are talking about SEO I have noticed that you have only 68 referring pages from three domains. This amount of backlinks is not enough to rank high in any niche. Currently you have 2 keywords in Google.com top 20, they are “safflower petals” and “paraffin petrolatum”, and so, in any case you need some link building campaign to rank high.

Also, please read the posts that already been posted here by us, you will find a lot of useful info on how to optimize the website internally to allow Google associate it with the keywords you are looking to promote for. You have about 103 pages in Google index but the title meta tags of your pages are mostly the same. Try to add some general keywords like “injury treatment balsam” etc.

Good luck with the project Dylan.

Hi Hanna

Thank you for your review - much appreciated.

I have been trying to use unique title and descriptions for collections and pages, but the ones you mention (copied below) are sub-categories created using the tags feature when I create a product. I didn't realise there was a way to add meta tags to these pages as I am not sure how to access them.

Hello Patrice,

Can you make your logo and your banner smaller so that your visitors scroll less? It would be also good to have a short description near the logo so that visitors understand at once that you sell calendula balm for skin care.

You could also optimize your project for such keywords like “natural skin care products”, “organic skin care” etc.

But frankly speaking we would not advise you to pay a lot of attention to SEO. In your case PPC advertising, relevant posts on thematical resources and partnering with ecommerce websites selling similar products would bring more benefit.

Good luck with your project!

Hello Julie!  Wonderful idea! I liked the idea of your shop  lukedrewthis.co.uk really much)

Firstly before diving into SEO stuff, I would like to say that your business is very promising in terms of social media promotion and audience engagement. For example, kids topics is very rewarding - parents love share photos of their beloved kids, so you can for example run a contest on Facebook with childrens' photos in your shirts or create Instagram account and encourage people to post pictures with your bags and t shirts with a certain hashtag. Create community around your brand - it is easy with your kind of product and will go a long way for your business.

Let me also touch base on several usabiliy points as well here. Link to Contact Us page should be placed somewhere at the top  - user should be able to easily find your contacts should he want to get in touch with you - especially relevant it is for mobile users.

Testimonials  - another great source of higher conversions, visitors persuasion and attraction of their attention. With such testimonials as you have it is a must have to place them somewhere at the forefront, make prominent and easily spotted when user arrives on the home page.

Now let's proceed to SEO part).  First of all you need optimize your page titles, descriptions, headings and texts - these are general recommendations which I frequently write here, so please check my early posts for more details. In short - you need to select a pool of keywords for which you would like your website to be ranked in the search engines and then you will need to include these keywords in meta tags and texts.

So for example, your home page title is very short, it doesn't contain any keywords or valuable information. Description of the home page lacks call to action I would say. Heading which should be put in H1 tag is absent at all. Additionally, there is little text on the home page, if you will include keywords there, there won't be enpough content to do that. The same procedure (optimization for keywords and additing a fare amount of text) should be done for category pages like http://www.lukedrewthis.co.uk/collections/t-shirts and product pages like http://www.lukedrewthis.co.uk/collections/bags/products/organic-shopper.  Important thing is that through all your website and web space in the whole your texts should be unique on every page. Similarly, web page titles and descriptions should not be repeated - it is strictly penalized by search engines.

As for duplicates I have also found that you have this page http://www.lukedrewthis.co.uk/pages/frontpage and this page http://www.lukedrewthis.co.uk/ with identical content - it should be rewritten on one of these pages or http://www.lukedrewthis.co.uk/pages/frontpage could be safely removed at all. Also, http://www.lukedrewthis.co.uk/index.php and http://www.lukedrewthis.co.uk/ are two different URLs which open the same home page, you should set up redirect from http://www.lukedrewthis.co.uk/index.php  to http://www.lukedrewthis.co.uk/.

I wish you good luck with your business and all the best!

Make sure to check our guides   http://www.promodo.com/pdf-downloads/guides/  and follow our Facebook page  https://www.facebook.com/promodo - you will find lots of useful stuff for your web store promotion! Regards, Hanna

Hello DFD,

According to what we can see you are ranked TOP 20 for such keywords like French desserts, French desserts for kids etc. These keywords are obviously not relevant for you. This can be one of the reasons why you have no sales. Most probably you are ranked for these keywords because your domain name contains them and the competition in that niche is so low that Google thinks your project is relevant for these keywords.

At the same time you are ranked for Tombstone invitations with the page http://damnfrenchdesserts.com/products/digital-invitations-tombstone because the page is optimized for this keyword, they are also included into your Url and the competition for this keywords is low.

And in order to be ranked for higher volume keywords related to cards, envelopes etc. your website lacks backlinks - we found 9 backlinks to your project.

So our recommendation would be to build more backlinks from thematical resources. They would help you to get more direct traffic and improve your rankings.

Good luck with your project!

Hello Shirine,

Frankly speaking the website surprised me a lot, It’s strange to me to see so many different products on one website in the same category. So it will be great to separate the products for categories and then optimize each category accordingly and promote it. I have also noticed that you don’t have any backlinks so you must have just started with your business. Here is one more thing to think about http://www.thereisnothinglikeagift.com/collections/all no pictures and no texts and this is your catalog page, one of the most important pages on the website.

As for onsite optimization, all the titles repeat the product name and can be significantly improved. Again it will be great to separate the products for the categories to select keywords that you can use in titles.

Hope that will help you.

Hello Neil!

Here is what I would say about your website in terms of SEO and usability.

Firstly, as in many other cases, I would advise to write full, informative and featuring keywords titles for all your pages, add descriptions where they are absent, and make headings with h1 tag. Currently, I saw that h1 tag is used to highlight brand name link at the left top corner - it should be corrected. Importantly, while you will be doing this, you should monitor that all pages have unique titles and descriptions and they are not repeated elsewhere.

Similarly, all pages of your website should have text, containing keywords, some pages of your site currently don't have it  - for example, http://www.zippitsjeans.com/collections/all-pockets, http://www.zippitsjeans.com/collections/only-denim-pockets..

Pages duplicates: your website could be opened for http://zippitsjeans.com and zippitsjeans.com, you should choose one version, for another you should set 301 redirect.

To start getting organic traffic to your website you should gain links. Your topic is quite rewarding, so you can write engaging blog posts, actively participate on the forums, make infographics, issue video tips, etc. Social media at this point will be of great help, you can run instagram account, make more boards on Pinterest, increase activity of Facebook... As to the Facebook, make sure to supply part of the engagin content keeping the user attention, and part of the content remain selling.

To get back to SEO, to find some keyword ideas you can study your competitors websites, there are special tools which may show you keywords for which your competitors are being promoted and also backlinks which they have, Having this information you can do just the same ;-)

Now about usability: firstly, make Contact Us page a separate link  and place it somewhere at the top - make it visible. Also make email clickable  - your users will thank you for that) Next point - I would improve not found page  - I would add there some links and suggestions which could go like this "The page you are looking for doesn't exist, but you can go to the home page and proceed shopping" - something of this kind. And on the step when the item has been added to the cart, I would add button which offered buyer to continue the shopping. And lastly, some of social media buttons at the bottom of your page  - namely, you tube, instagram, vimeo, google plus   - are currently leading to Shopify accounts - it creates negative user experience.

Hope it helps it feel free to contact us for more help!

Regards, Hanna

Hello Amrin,

We won't be able to tell you much because we do not support Swedish, but generally we can tell you that you should optimize your project for relevant keywords. For example your page

http://smyckesshoppen.com/collections/all/har-accessoarer. You could at least add "Har accessoarer" keyword into your Title meta tag and within your page content. The same is valid for all other product categories.

Please note that your Title meta tag should be unique for each page. You can find more information on how to optimize your project for relevant keywords in the post of Elena Ruchko to Tanay Mehta above. Because general workflow is the same regardless of the language.

We hope it helps you a bit!

Hello Kenneth,

Please note that all texts on your website should be unique and they should not be present on other websites.

If you check, for example, this piece of text from your homepage ”Salt-Away is a water-based, non-hazardous, biodegradable solution and contains properties that dissolve, release and remove salt crystals from any surface.” in

Google you will see that Google ranks other websites for this text. Your project is not even in TOP 10 for this text. If you don’t change the texts, the chances to be ranked high are very low.

Please also amend your Title meta tags. For example at the moment they are either empty or contain URL of the page. Ideally they should contain relevant keywords describing the essence of the page. For a more detailed information on how to select keywords and how to amend Title please check the post of Elena Ruchko to Tanay Mehta above in this thread.

It’s great that you have information pages. If optimized properly they will help you get traffic for “how-to” phrases for your niche.

Some image “before” and “after” will help your visitors compare the result and increase sales. We mean you should show your product in action. If you have resources and budget for that – even some video in this regard to persuade your potential customers.

We hope this helps you additionally improve your project. Good luck!

Hello Cameron,

From usability point of view we found no serious issues. For t-shirts and beanies we just would like to know the fabrics. And for bags it would be useful to understand the dimensions and capacity.

From SEO point of view your project should have at least 4 additional separate product category pages (for t-shirts, beanies, bags and socks correspondingly). Your Homepage could be SEO-optimized for some generic keywords like online fashion stores, fashion shops, designer outlet online. Each product category page should be SEO-optimized for corresponding relevant keywords.

But frankly speaking in your case SEO would doubtfully help much at all. You have high chances to be ranked for branded keywords (containing your brand Howl). But we found no demand for this brand at the moment. As for generic keywords and product category keywords you will have to compete in search results with larger online fashion stores. Since there will be required considerable investments and some time to beat those competitors, it’s not the best way to attract potential customers.

We would recommend you to try PPC advertising, relevant forums postings, social media activities. These sources of potential customers would be cheaper and more promising.

Forums and social media would work well if you develop some legend around your brand. Why should I choose Howl? What philosophy this brand has? Why is it cool to wear Howl?

We hope our comments help you :)

Hello Kara,

We found no serious issues in terms of usability. Though why is your “Shop by size” filter empty on all pages? We mean why does it contain only “all” parameter? If you have no division by size it would be better to hide this filter at all.

You have also optimized your project for many relevant keywords. The only issue we found is duplicate pages in search results like http://209.183.230.9/index.cfm?action=store&sub=category&c=101&s=118, or madlax.myshopify.com/.../madgear-breast-cancer-awareness-shorts. Please note that product descriptions should be unique.

We would also recommend to add SEO-optimized texts to your product category pages.

Please also pay attention to link building now. You currently have only 1 domain referring to your project. This won’t be enough to get higher rankings for relevant keywords.

If you once decide to outsource this activity to some third-party contractor, you are welcome to drop us a line at contact@promodo.com.

Good luck with your project!

Hello Wilheimina!

Books for childrens is a great idea, I love it, now let me give several recommendations.

You asked what to focus on - one of the first things you need to do is to write texts for the product (in your case - books) pages, such as this one http://raythebuffalo-friends.myshopify.com/products/emily-button. On each of such pages you need to create unique, quality text, which Google will like and which will engage the users and make them want to buy the book. One more thing, you will have to add keywords to this text - search queries for which you would like to be found on Google.

How to find these keywords? You can Google Keyword Planner or one of these tools http://ubersuggest.org/, http://www.keywordeye.com/, http://www.wordstream.com/free-keyword-tools. Also there are special programs which let you check keywords for which your competitors are being ranked. For example, when I typed the most obvious keyword for your case "books for children" I found these websites: http://www.booksforkids.org/, http://www.randomhousekids.com/. The longer the keyword is, the easier to be ranked for it, so I would advise to choose something more specified "poetry books for children" etc..

Next step is to rewrite all titles for your pages, write good looking descriptions and heading which you will have to put in h1 tag (currently h1 is used to mark link with logo - it is incorrect). I wrote about this optimization several times already, so please kindly check my earlier posts.

Now about other issues I have found on your website. At present there is only one page in Google index, which means that you cannot get traffic from Google search, in order for your pages to appear in Google index you should upload xml sitemap to Google Webmaster Tools. If there will be any problems with sitemap itself, Webmaster tools will let you know about that.

Now about usability part. I would personally move the text upward. Because when the user arrives to the website, it can't understand at once what the website is about, he has to scroll several times to reach the text. Also the first window scroll space, which gets the most of user's attention, contains only logo, I would fill in this space with  ifnormation and links related to other books, books which are on sale, etc. I would make this space more selling.  The website menu is also not quite visible. I would either make it more prominent or move to the upper panel of the website, where by the way user usually expects to see About Us or Contact Us link. Oh, and I didn't see the information about the shipping, probably it is worth ot add it too.

I think that your topic is really beneficial in terms of interaction with the users - there is not only an opportunity for great accounts creation on social media, but also there is a lot of space for game, through which you can also engage the user, create the community and earn loyal fans of your books and customers. Here is the post I came across yesterday, probably it will give you some ideas: http://searchenginewatch.com/article/2303233/Gamification-in-Marketing-Lessons-from-the-Khan-Academy-Website

Feel free to ask if you have any questions. Hope my answer was helpful.

Regards, Hanna

Hello Debora,

Sorry for not replying you quicker.

We would recommend highlighting some featured products right on your homepage. Some small SEO-optimized description/introduction to your shop would be also great from usability and SEO point of view.

Though most probably onsite SEO in your case won’t be enough. You should also pay attention to building links to your website. At the moment we found just 1 backlink to your domain and it is definitely not enough to get good rankings for higher volume keywords. Though onsite SEO could help you get rankings for long tail keywords if you optimize your project for them. You can check the post of Elena Ruchko to Tanay Mehta above in this thread on how to do it.

Good luck with the project!

Hello Serge,

We’d recommend formatting the text more compact so that your products are visible right on the first screen of the monitor and do not scroll too much. For example at http://www.iresolution.ca/collections/shop. If this page sells new and used iPhones, you should optimize it for the keywords like used iphones, used iphone 4, buy used iphones etc.  i.e. you should use them in your Title meta tag and within page content.

The same goes for all other pages of your project. For more information on how to do a keyword research to find relevant keywords and oiptimize your project for these keywords please check the post of Elena Ruchko to Tanay Mehta above in this thread.

Onsite SEO should help you increase traffic for long tail keywords. If you want to be ranked for high volume competitive keywords like used iphone(s) it will not be enough. You should also build much more backlinks to your project. At the moment we found just 1 backlink to your domain. This can be done on relevant forums, blogs, etc.

We hope this helps you a bit :)

Hello Julie,

Well done! Generally your project looks nice and suitable for SEO. The texts are unqiue, which is important.

We would recommend adding small SEO-optimized texts to each product category page. Let’s take for example your http://www.okuhome.com/collections/bedroom/bedroom-sets page. Some text here containing “bedroom furniture sets”, “kids bedroom sets”, “full size bedroom sets”, “modern bedroom sets” would be great. The same advice goes to other product category pages. There’s a plenty of relevant keywords in your niche, you should just do extensive keywords research and then optimize Title meta tags and page content for the selected keywords.

Please check the post of Elena Ruchko to Tanay Mehta for more details on this. Or contact us at contact@promodo.com if you need our help here. This should help you improve rankings for long tail keywords.
But anyway for a better performance for high volume keywords you will need more backlinks. It seems you have just 36 backlinks form unique domains. And just 25 of them are dofollow (Google counts only dofollow links for rankings). Nevertheless you seem to be ranked for several keywords related to John Lewis furniture, although they are long tail ones and do not bring much traffic. Besides for the majority of these keywords you are ranked on the second page in Google.

We wish you good luck with your project!

Thank you, I know we have several sites we are listed on. I don't understand why the external links are not working. Do you have any suggestions?

Hi Debora,

The result here heavily depends upon the backlinks that you have done. We have checked your project with ahrefs.com service and found 248 backlinks. But they all come from one and the same domain elite1fitnessgear.com which redirects to your current domain.

You see, when you place backlinks you should check at least these parameters:

1. If the website where you are placing a link is indexed by Google (if Google doesn't know about that website it will not count that link to your favor).

2. Is this a dofollow or nofollow link? Nofollow links do not affect rankings.

For Google it is important to have as much backlinks from unique doamins as possible. We mean if you for example get several links from just 1 domain - Google will count it as just 1 backlink.

Hello Andrew!

Sorry for the delay, please my answers below.

To get traffic to your website http://www.sun-pillar.co.uk/ you should make sure all technical aspects of it are in order, optimize for keywords and then start building links to the website.

At present your website is not shown in Google index, only cart page. You have xml sitemap, so probably the problem is that the xml sitemap has not been submitted to Google Webmaster Tools. Please do that and monitor this issue - it is very essential for your wbesite to be fully indexed by Google.

Also, I have noticed that your website opens for sun-pillar.co.uk/ and for www.sun-pillar.co.uk/, please choose only one version, from other version should be 301 redirect to the one you have chosen and the main.

I have noticed that there is some text on your website which is repeated on the Web - duplicates are very dangerous so make sure to keep all the texts on pages in titles and in descriptions unique. "A Sun Pillar is a visual phenomenon created by the reflection of light from ice crystals with near horizontal parallel planar surfaces" this text is copied and text on this page http://sun-pillar.co.uk/pages/sunpillar.

I think you should reorganize the structure of your website a little bit, I would leave About Me page but would eliminate Welcome page and useful information place on Home page. Home page should be the first in the line. Also, I have noticed that some pages inside continue valuable information as to the shipping and payments, probably, it would be better to make a separate page with this kind of information.

As to the Home page, I would also make it more selling, like on this website, for example, http://www.pilotmall.com/ - make a note of how infomration about different products offers, sales and information about the website si presented on the home page. In your case I would make the picture less, add more text (each page of your website should have a good amount of text - it is essential for SEO), and place information about the products or their pictures closer to the top, so the user won't have to scroll down to the second window to see it.

As to teh keywords for which to be promoted and for link building strategy, I would conduct a large competitive research. Luckily, I have sold already this product on Ebay and Amazon, so probably you know your audience needs, what they value and looking for, and what your competitors are. Make search on Google for terms like "pilot headsets", " avitation accessories", "pilot supplies", etc. Then analyze the websites with good rankings in the search results. You will need to understand how they are being promoted - probably they do lots of guest posts, publish articles about aircraft related topics, probably their products are actively discussed on forums, or sold via social network. As to the social networks, try to make a sneak peak at their startegy in social media in order to make your own page more engaging and earn loyal fans.

Here is the post talking about advanced search on Google which you may use to uncover the stratege of your competitiors, I think it will be useful if you don't wish to use any paid competitors tracking services.

Ashley, shorelineboutique.com,

I have found about 92 pages of your website in Google index. So the SE knows that the website exist still your rankings are below top 20 of Google.com.

I’m not sure whether you offer a unique apparel or not. In case the apparel is unique you can easily go for online marketing and attract traffic contacting bloggers and fashion reviewers. You can use your Social Medias like Instagram and Facebook to create a loyal community and share with them the news and new collections. Think about posting different reviews on fashion blogs with a link to your website and Instagram, that should help you to attract traffic.

Speaking about the website I have noticed that the titles are mostly identical, I’m sure it will be better if you optimize them with the keywords and phrases. The common rule is to optimize home page and category pages for general keywords and product pages for low volume keywords.

As for product pages, the text on the page is very thin, I’m sure you’ve heard about thin content on the website that is not really what Google appreciates. Your category pages don’t have any texts at all, so write some texts and download it there. It will be also great to add breadcrumbs on the website that will help with quicker indexation and improve user experience.

Good luck with the website Ashley.

Alexander, chocolatestate.com you have so tasty website J

I have tried to read about us page and I don’t understand how you differ from other chocolate suppliers? You see this is the first question that Google asks before any rankings applied, it tries to understand the unique value of the website for an ordinary customer.

At the moment you have about 268 pages in Google index but you don’t have any rankings and backlinks. So backlinks should be your main priority. I have also found a duplicate of your blog on the Wordpress domain that is already in Google index. http://chocolatestate.wordpress.com/

It can be potentially risky for the website as it totally contradicts Google policy about unique content on the website.

Speaking further you can add some text on your catalog page http://www.chocolatestate.com/collections that will increase the value of the website for SE algorithm. And please don’t forget about titles optimization and keyword research.

Good luck Alexander.

Hello everyone,

Thank you so much for your engagement and trust! It is really fascinating to see so many good and creative projects created on Shopify and help them out with online promotion!

I am awfully sorry for such a long silence, but, unfortunatelly, I have to admit that I can no longer cope with so many requests and reply persoanlly to each webmaster, please accept my sincere appologies for that. But! I do still want to help you all and, I think, I have come up with a great way to do it that would both save me some time and still provide you with the valuable advice you are all seeking.

So here is what I suggest - every 2 weeks I will be running a webinar session devoted particularly to the issues of SEO, UX and online promotion of the Shopify sites that you guys submit here. I will collect all the sites, analyze them, find some weak places and will showcase what should be done at those sites during a live session after which we will have a Q&A where you will be able to put me all the rest of the questions that might remail unanswered.

I do hope it would work for you and I am looking forward to tackling this fascinating challenge ;)

I suggest that we run the first webinar for Shopify community and particularly those who submit their sites here on the 28th of November, to participate in the webinar, please sign up for it here http://promo.do/SK1K

The sites that I will be analyzing and sharing my advice for will include

www.rusticmango.com

www.alcoholaccessories.com

www.inneraffirmations.com

www.lashkaraa.com

www.icollectionshop.com

www.elliecrate.co.za

www.chucklefarm.com

www.momistainc.com

www.forevermidnightclothing.com

www.sole2sole.sg

And all the others who will submit their sites after that.

Please let me know if you have any comments.

Hi everyone!

Thank you so much once again for signing up for the webinar and for submitting your sites for a review.

But there is one very important thing that I realized just today, we have scheduled our webinar for the Thanksgiving day in the US!

So, I would like to ask you, please, let me know here in the comments if that's OK, or if we should better reschedule for some other date? Like the next day, for example, - Friday, the 29th on November or next Monday, the 2nd of December?

Please let me know, I am ready to make it almost any day.

Warm regards,

Anna

Hi Adam,

After a quick review of your site, I found some typical issues of a new website:

- poorly optimized content and titles;

- SEO not considered in site structure;

- no keyword research made whatsoever.

I would advise you to find some time to watch the recording of our webinar http://youtu.be/D3Y_FAkfYi8 for Shopify site owners, we held recently, it contains tips on keyword research, titles and content optimization, as well as correct SEO structure and many more.

In terms of keywords and site structure, I would recommend you to look  at the typical keyword combinations like "herbal tea for weight loss", "herbal tea for depression" and so on, and try to structure your site according to those categories. Also, when you start creating posts at your blog, make sure you optimize them well for specific sets of keywords, and link to your selling pages from within the posts.

Hope that helps!

  2. sign up here http://promo.do/T0A3 for the webinar, where I will be doing a review of the weak points of all the sites submitted
  3. That's it! Just follow the email reminders and don't miss the session :)

For now here is the list of sites that are going to be reviewed:

Hanna you kindly looked at my site some time ago.  Unfortunately since then we seem to have dropped down googles listing significantly and I know we are missing out on sales.  Since then I set up an additional blogspot blog to try and promote backlinks.  It hasn't worked!  In fact I don't know what we can do to increase our visibility to google - I must be doing something wrong with SEO - please could you have a look and come back to me.

Many thanks

It's easy to look at other people's websites and think things like  'Don't they know that colour scheme is really off-putting?" but so hard to see things on one's own site, so a fresh pair of eyes would be terrific.

If you still have room, I'd like feedback on my shop www.littlegoatgruff.co.uk.

Hi,

I really need some help.  I am using my shopify store as a shop link from another website.  Although I'm getting a small number of referrals from that website, I'm getting nothing at all from search engines.  There is obviously something very wrong!

Thanks in advance,

Belinda

Any help would definitely be appreciated. It seems the only traffic that I'm getting is from people in our town (which is nice, but we'd like to extend our reach nationally) and links that I share on social media. Other than that, very little traffic appears to come from search engines. Over the last several months, we're only averaging about 15 hits a day, which is pretty much nothing. It'd be nice to know what I can do to address some of this. I feel like everything I try either has no effect at all, or affects us negatively. Thank you so much for being willing to help out!!!

Hello, I will be signing up for the Feb. 20th seminar. Our website is: www.gourmetmondiale.com. Any feedback on this website would be greatly appreciated. It is a bit of a special one as we use a bilingual theme for which we need to write both English and French on the same line in page title (separated by a pipe | character). I've always wondered how this affects SEO.

Thank you.

Hello, I just put up my site yesterday. Hoping I can get some feedback on SEO strategies. Shopify store url is resistance-bands.myshopify.com, How does one use a regular domain name like I see most doing? Is it just a 301 redirect?

Thanks, David
