Shipping Charges not shown in Paypal This post is outdated

Hi,

I'm sure that we have all read articles stating that hidden shipping charges really should be avoided and the worst thing any ecommerce store can ever do is leave the display of the Shipping charges until the final page of payment. Now from my understanding this is exactly the current behaviour of the Shopify/Paypal Express set up. Can someone advise if I am correct in this assumption and if not how I can go about changing this.

Today I visited another unrelated ecommerce store and was checking their integration with Paypal express and strangely enough they were able to display shipping charges on the paypal payment page under the order summary.

Any help appreciated!

Thanks

Rick

Hi Rick,

If you go to Paypal Express Checkout directly from the cart page, the shipping option hasn't been selected, so it isn't shown in Paypal. Once the transaction has been authorized on Paypal, the shipping charge is shown on Shopify before completing the order.

If you got to Paypal from the second page of the checkout, the shipping charge is shown on Paypal, and the order will be completed on Paypal.

I hope this clears things up.

Hi Jonathan,

Thanks for your reply. As you indicated it looks like my store is going to Paypal from the cart page. How do I change this so it goes from the 'second page' of the checkout? Is this the page I am currently seeing after the Paypal page when the cusomter returns to our Shopify site for final confirmation?

I can see a lot of customers dropping out of the purchase process because shipping is not being made visible in all steps of the process. I also get a lot of feedback from customers about this so I'd really like to clean this part of the process up. Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks

Rick

Are you using Paypal express Rick? If not what flavor of Paypal are you using? I know you're in HK so I'm not sure what was available to you based on your location. I've gone through your checkout and the direct bump to Paypal implies express and I don't think it works any other way.

Hi Jamie,

Thanks for the follow up. You are correct, we are based in HK and are using Paypal Express. It sounds like the process flow is not able to be changed with this payment option?

Last time I checked this was the only Paypal payment option available to us but I'm going to call them tomorrow to see whether they have anything else they can offer. I can see both Website Payments Standard and Pro available as options in my Shopify admin dashboard. Does that mean I should be able to switch to one of those?

If I am able to switch to Website Payments Standard or Pro then can I amend the payment process so that shipping prices are shown continuously all the way from choosing the product to the final payment page (including any Paypal pages in between)?

Thanks again! Hope I can sort this out finally!

Rick

If you can switch to pro or payflow pro (also Paypal) then even better, your clients will never leave the site of even see paypal and all data gathering for customer will happen on the Shopify side.

We use the PayPal Website Payments Pro and what Jamie says is true. However, you are back in the same boat if someone clicks on the Paypal button that appears prominently on the first page of the checkout. Paypal users that go this route will not see shipping info until they return to your site for order confirmation.

Now that Shopify provides customer accounts as a feature (woohoo!), I wouldn't mind seeing that big Paypal button on the first page go away by default. It would make the checkout process much less confusing. I suspect it is there because Paypal requires it. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

@Jolly Old Bloke ~ That is handled in your cart.liquid template under

{% if additional_checkout_buttons %}

Thanks Jamie. The template I started my journey into Shopify with didn't have that code in the cart template. I did a quick test and see now that it solves my problem. Much better! Having the button on the cart page next to the regular checkout button is cleaner and less confusing.

Okay, here's the latest update. Spoke to Paypal this morning (only took 2 phone calls, 20 minutes of waiting and 3 hours waiting for the 'right person' to call me back... I think that's a new record by the way...)

So the deal is:

1) Paypal Website Payments Pro is not currently supported outside of the US, UK and Canada... and so this is a no-go for Hong kong

2) Paypal Express Checkout apparently 'Should' be able to display the shipping charges as long as being passed from Shopify... So is it the case that Shopify would need to change to accommodate this?

3) A new Paypal solution which can be offered to me is 'Paypal Website Payments Pro Hosted' See https://www.paypal-marketing.com.hk/en/business/website-payment-pro.php). Apparently this solution uses an 'iframes' method to embed the Paypal payment within the host shop website... I don't believe this is currently supported by Shopify?

4) I am able to use Paypal Website Payments Standard in HK.

So for now I have switched from Express Checkout to Website Payments Standard. I can see now (after a few test orders) that the payment process is different. After the cart page I can see that a shipping address is asked for and then the shipping charges are shown. After this the Paypal screen is shown and the payment is finalised (including the shipping charge). However Paypal was not automatically redirecting to the final Shopify 'Thank you' page automatically. I then added the following URL to the 'auto-return URL' parameter in my Paypal admin:

https://checkout.shopify.com/orders/656682/25745b85978753f7708b98522ae1f70a

Not sure if this is the correct URL but I copied it from one of my test orders... It seems to work but I can see problems whereby the customer may not wait for the auto-return to kick in and hence the final thank you page will not be displayed. This WILL cause me problems as it means all the additional scripts, etc that I have set to run from the Shopify admin panel may not run correctly... Any solutions to that problem?

So, I'm not sure now if I am in a better place or not :-(

Any further help appreciated!

Rick
