Setting up STAGING site for beta testing This post is outdated

How do I setup a staging site using Shopify where I can make changes before pushing them to my live online shop? Ideally, I would like to setup a copy of my site with all of its products. Whenever I need to makes changes to a product, I would like to change it in my staging site firswt, confirm that it looks good and them "push" it to production. I would use the same process to make any changes to my shop's theme as well. Does anyone know whether this is possible?

I think I would setup a second Shopify site, make it secure so that you have to login to view it, and upload the templates for testing to that one first.

As long as you are not concerned about individual products, but rather the structure of the site, this would work on the free level of subscription. Keep it in demo mode (don’t add payment gateway info), and you can test it from top to bottom.

...Or you could run a local copy using Vision – http://vision.shopify.com/

Would need to mod the database though if you wanted to include your products – http://forums.shopify.com/categories/1/posts/17383

Yeah, just set up a second, test account. I do that for designing themes since Vision doesn’t always behave like the live site. Plus it helps a bunch to be able to have the actual store products to test with. You can’t achieve that with Vision either.

Thanks a bunch to all who answered!

1. Is there a way to do bulk product updates? Can I get access to the database storing my products?

2. Would I have to add each product manually to my staging site?
