Optimal size for a JPG for a photo site? This post is outdated

Being a photographer I want the best looking image but also want to conserve size - what is the best size - any opinions?  I think I get 1 gig at the moment so 2 meg would give me 500 images.

Hey Rod!

We highly recommend using 1024x1024 images for product photos. A similar resolution should work for photos, and having them at 72 dpi should be good enough for display on your site, as that should be high enough resolution while relatively conservative in file size.

Let me know what you think!

That is about what I was using.  I have a lot of 1x3 and 3x1 ratio images which is always tricky on websites.

Thanks

We recommend uploading product images at Shopify's max resolution; which is currently 2048 ox 2048. If you have a 1:3 ratio portrait, upload 683 x 2048. And for landscape, 2048 x 683. Just have the longer dimension be 2048. Shopify automatically generates a range of sizes to use in your template. Important note is that you are not locked to the original image size you upload.

This will take up more space, but if image quality is priority, then it may be worth it.

Thanks for weighing in!

That is correct-- if you want to have the maximum resolution, then 2048 is our upper limit. Images larger than this can be uploaded, but it's possible they will not display correctly.

For anyone else viewing this thread via a search result, it's important to know that the original image will never be scaled up. If you upload a tiny image, it will remain tiny, that is, it will keep the same size as the original size in the ‘large’ and ‘grande’ sizes
